mates got a rodeo 2 door tray back with the 3.5L v6 in it,
and it uses heeps of fuel with no load on the back, apparently this is normal for this engine.
does anyone know if they can be retuned or something to help lower the fuel usage.

I believe Unichip make a compatible piggyback tuner for this engine and vehicle . Thats a tuning option .

Curious to know actual figures as this is more accurate way to decide wether it uses heaps of fuel or he just thinks it does .........

If its a single cab LX i expect the gearing will be fairly low as well .

A thorough check and inspection of the whole thing might be the first port of call , did the dealer give it a clean bill of health ?

clamp the fuel line off, that usually stops them using fuel tongue.gif

seriously though, If that's concidered normal, then joe blogs tuning ain't going to make a lick of difference. manufactures don't set there vehicles up to waste fuel, it will need it.

make sure the air filters clean, good pressure in the tyres, and rip the drop sides and back off, then run it on a good 98ron fuel. there's not much more you can do.

ohh, if it's 4x4, make sure the hubs are freewheeling and not locked, turning a lazy diff over while driving will chew the juice

he got the car with 10,500km's on it, got it private sale.
it does around 15.5L per 100km's and he drives it like an old woman.
ive driven the car and all seems to be fine,
ive also asked other owners of rodeos' with this motor and they say " they drink an insane amount of fuel"
they rev just like a commodore on the highway in 5th.
so id say its the tune of the engine from factory,

the Nissan Navara D40 4.0l V6 uses 14.0l to 100kms and its putting out 198kw

the rodeo only has 147kw and is using heeps more fuel in a much lighter body.

oh, it is the single cab.

its not 4X4, and the hubs are auto locking on the newer models.
2004 onwards.
tyres are pumped but i did notice the air filter is really thick.
just a paper filter but also has a white sponge thing attached to the filter, making it worse for air flow but i bet nothing gets past it in the way of dift.

The only consumption figure i could find suggest 13+ l/ 100klm with the AC on and particular mention of a fairly short gearing so will be plenty rev happy if holding the gears , and an over driven fifth that doesnt like lugging at low speed . both scenarios promoting excess fuel use if not mindful and cursed with a heavy foot .

I dont agree with the comment " manufacturers dont set there cars up to waste fuel " . Sure they dont do it intentionally but if its a global spec fully imported model the mapping can be a little rich in places that can be corrected . Smaller capacity Japanese diesels are quite often over fuelled .

If he really cant live with it , and the thing is maintained to spec , a dyno pull with a wide band oxygen sensor would tell you if all is running correctly .

redbook says 13.3l/100km combined consumption

so quite easy to see more than that with city driving and a little bit of lead foot

and its made in japan so it may run a little rich

true, but i doubt trimming the fuel would gain that much fuel economy, not in the area of 2-3 lites per hundred, to see some real results/savings and enough to out-wieght a uni-chip + install etc.

is 15.5 for around town, or highway? i would't be concerned if it's around town. but it should do alot better on the highway

Where i use to work had one of these utes, Shocking on fuel.
The revvy motor doesnt help.

1 thing i noticed is that this motor seems to use alot of fuel on idle, especially on cold start. So maybe some light driving instead of leaving the ute ide will help bring the motor up to temp quicker. And also avoid long periods of idling.
