Isn't the only thing that really lets the MX-5 down is that when you put to much power through the drive line you start doing boxes and drive shafts ?

But you can transfer the Rx7 running gear into them ?

*blocks ears* i cant hear you la la la la

please, please, please avoid transplanting anything into an mx-5. its nothing but copious amounts of trouble sad.gif the stock gearboxes cope fine up to about 10psi through the 1.8, after that they do start to break a bit. keep it at that though and you'll be right for a fair while.

The 6spd box is the strongest for the mx5... only know of one person breaking them and thats because he drifts.
Not sure what most racers use for diffs... a common street diff is the TorSen, not sure if people use it on the track.

You can transfer rx-7 running gear, but its ALOT of work. You need to custom build a plate to connect the engine to the box, a custom ppf (connects diff to gearbox). And then you have to deal with the diff, shafts etc.

If it was going to be strictly track, i wouldnt even bother building one up. Why would you when these are forsale?...

And going on from what jezza said, the mx5 race class in qld is the largest in Aus, then you can join in on the several mx5 club track days per year (normally ~$95, 5 lap sessions = about ~30laps)

On paper they look pritty similar other than the g-box from 89-2000, any other reasons why you would bother with the later model? double the price too dont think its worth it.
Interior looks pritty modern, just the lack of power might turn me off(& lack of roof).
Any links for details & cost of turbo kits etc?

make sure its a 1994 or onwards, anything with a 1.8 in it. the newer models (the ones without the pop-up headlights) had bigger brakes as well as the 1.8 too. if you can find a clubman then buy one, they had bilsteins installed in them.

basically talk to kitkat, he's is responsible for finding my car and knows a lot about mx-5's.

some slight engine differences, larger brakes, ABS, stiffer chassis, bigger/stronger diff, modern looks... basically the newer they are the better car they are, but then ofcourse the more expensive they are. Just make sure if you get one its a 1.8L.

Turbo kits i havent really looked into... if your thinking turbo, you will want atleast a 94", otherwise youll be spending more money upgrading the brakes and diff. I would budget $5000 atleast for something decent.

maybe read this thread quickly... http://www.aus-cartalk.com/viewtopic.php?p...cc247eb3b5e1a1b

why not just buy the MR-S and get the sequential gearbox as well then. seems pointless to put the expensive motor in the old ones when the new ones are so nicer. $24k for the car, and $3k for TRD to do some upgrades biggrin.gif

The MR-S didn't come with the 2zz, and that sequential box is rubbish even with 1zz powah tongue.gif But I do understand it does start getting expensive on an MR-S quickly due to it being new-ish.

But back to the MX-5 discussion. I think the Clubman version also came with an LSD dunno.gif
Plus the MX-5 has a lot of aftermarket support and plenty of people have tried and tested everything so with some research it would be possible to get value for money out of mods.

from what i have read they are very well balenced for stock car but yes - expensive still compared to others

I picked up my new engine and turbo kit for the sw20 this afternoon so i hope it doesnt take too long to assemble the thing now. Its been in the garage with old engine out for 8 months now sad.gif so i hope i remember where everything goes... something tells me ill have a pile of screws/bolts/brackets left over when im done!

I think an awesome track car would be a aw11 with built 4agze engine converted with a disco potato turbo. Could be done relativly on the cheap too...

Ill be out spectating at QR tomorrow, old mechanic friend has his track n/a sw20 out.

i was out there today, i assume your old mechanic friend is terry?....i managed to get in 1 session...with the car sliding all over the shop...only to find when i came back in id split a CV boot and sprayed CV grease everywhere sad.gif thought id better throw in the towel and drive home to make sure i didnt cost myself a big towing bill.

ahh well, better go see what i gotta do to fix this thing now

MR2Mark
Post #1024

I was pretty sure I saw your car there jezza but not certain. Terry said he had a look under a car and saw cv grease everywhere, didnt realise it was yours.

Hope you can fix it easily, I know well how much of a pain cv joints can be after changing out some of my stock cages for stronger aftermarket ones in the sw20.

I left fairly early as well, damn its getting hot out there again :S

jezza323
Post #1025

yeah that was me smile.gif silver starlet....

im building an engine atm with terry doing all the machining etc so i kinda know him...just asked him to have a quick look for me, give me his professional opinion. he said to clean it up and keep going....but i wanted to be sure i could get it home. so no fucking around, just went straight home sad.gif

i dont know, they go for around $24k nowadays which isnt too bad for what you get. which engine was the 2ZZ? i was thinking of the 1ZZ-GE from the celica/mrs range.

the lsd in the clubmans is just the Viscous type, its pretty average but does the job. but still, if you include the buy price, upgrades and a few other things you'll be looking around $15k for a half decent MX-5 on the track. another $5k and you'll be looking at a very fast one biggrin.gif if you really wanted to go all out you could find one with a blown engine and transplant a BPD out of a familia into one. its technically the same engine just he BPD has turbo already and forged internals standard biggrin.gif

Clubman had a TorSen... jap imports had a Viscous. The viscous is pathetic... nothing to write home about.

Does work and alot have done the conversion but you do need to swap the CAS, intake manifold and a few other things overs.

thats right, my bad.

does sabretooth still have the write up from when he did the conversion to BPD? or is he still doing it?

After all this ...

I think a stripped out S13 with a decent suspension set-up would be easier then the Mx5 project blink.gif

PS. I'll still spoon you thou Mike happy.gif

We want cheap and nasty dammit rant2.gif !!!

* looks at Civic *

Oh babeh happy.gif

Looking at it an S13 would need -

Intercooler
Radiator
Oil cooler
Baffled sump
Exhaust
Diff (if the old ones shagged)
Suspension

You could prep one or buy one for under 20g's quiet easily I'd think

mx-5 needs no prep though. buy a clubman, go race. thats all you need to do biggrin.gif maybe tires if you want. thing is it would still outhandle the s13, just it'd be slower on the straights.

PS: looking forward to it jamie *puts on spooning suit*

also, i wonder if my boss will let me take one of the Getz's out on the track for a day biggrin.gif i just wanna race and i dont care what in.

Minko
Post #1034

Yeah the S13 is looking mighty fine on the list atm, heaps for sale, cheap, have a decent amount of go with mild mods, cheap parts, 1200KG etc etc.

neil_se
Post #1035

Mine was under 10k for a manual sr20det, ~1100kg, standard engine rebuild, s15 tubo and injectors, reprogramable ecu, full exhaust, FMIC, Sparco bucket seat, all adjustable rose-jointed suspension arms, 2 way diff, s15 subframe, R32 brakes, 5 stud conversion, braided brake and clutch lines, Volk rims, strut braces, Whiteline swaybar etc, etc. Since i've had it i've just added some guages, semi-slicks, and replaced the radiator because it was blocked and caused the head to warp.

I couldn't really give a crap what others think about Silvias, i bought it because it could go fast for cheap, i knew them back-to-front and replacement/aftermarket parts are cheap.

jezza323
Post #1036

the biggest problem with s13's in general is the association they have with wanker drivers, really they arent too bad of a car, getting pretty old these days of course.

PS: im not saying you are a wanker neil, just saying a lot of s13's drivers are/were wink.gif

Might have been an idea for me to actually participate in a sprint day or even a run at the drag strip to see if i even like it before spending a bit on engine, turbo kit etc etc, meh details tongue.gif

I dont have any times off hand but from talking to Terry and Cindy I know the n/a mr2's competed with mx-5's quite regularly in the production class at QR a few years back. n/a mr2 would be overtaken by the mx-5's in the corners and the overtake them on the straights.
