mx-5. you can get NB models for under 8k for race only. all you need from there is some better pads, maybe stickier tyres and brake lines. they even have there own class in qld.

anyone know off a good place that sells alloy radiators? for fcs?

PWR seem to make alright ones locally

Jamie get ivan to get you second hand spoon brakes, they are worth the money hey and not as exi as you would think (1000-1200k). Do a mod properly once and you never have to touch it again.

I'm still looking at all the options

But if it gets around that mark I might as well do that smile.gif

my evo uses a set of RE55s in about 3-4 track days, full days though not half. Nice times in the s2k, i was out there i saw you guys racing but i was in the saloon car for the first time so i was a little off the pace.

i heard the supra is a bit heavy and awkward on the track and that the GTR's go through their front tires heaps quick (might have been a sti, don't remember) dunno.gif Mr2 sounds good imo?

Minko
Post #990

Yeah leaning towards a 2 atm but they are hard to find...& i might not fit bowrofl.gif
Previous Supra was a bit dosile, nearly as bad as my mates VN commodore...but a reliable 300+ KW would make up for that.

I'd be scared of the mid engined characteristics of an MR2 ohnoes.gif

Ever contemplated an FC or FD Rx7 ?

MR2's are good, but have a tendency for snap oversteer. expect some off road driving tongue.gif
Supra is heavy and would really go through the tyres quickly trying to accelerate and brake all the time
180sx is good, cheap, relatively fast and lots of parts. but they are a nissan, and things tend to break when you abuse them a lot.
avoid the GT-r unless you have very deep pockets.

maybe you should give us some more details about how much you have to spend and what your looking for.

Yeah they where not far from the list...FC's seem to be dirt cheap but worried about reliability. FD's the same so would rather go S8 for some reliability but then you spending 30K~ which is a bit much for a mainly track car.

Yeah the weight problems is main reason for steering clear of the GT-R & Supra...i would preffer them but financially i am better off getting the smaller S13/MR2 & just doing a whole lot more racing for cheaper.

Budget = max of 30 but would rather stick to around 20K all up to start(Clean MR2/180sx for 10-15 & add 5K to prep for track work).
Want to have it road-registered to save hastle.
Needs to still have a bit or power

hmmmm, well you are aware that the mr2 will be quite difficult and very unforgiving. if you do go the mr2 path though i would highly recommend the older models. rip out the old engine and put a 4A-GZE in with a 20V head and you'll be set.

how about a caterham biggrin.gif

if you can afford the $35k price tag of course tongue.gif

pfft sif be soft, mr2s are fine, and once you the the feel of it, the oversteer is easy to keep under controll

*free plug* my mr2 is for sale aswell, so check i out! */end free plug*

One of my Managers has one of those with a massive wing on it bowrofl.gif

Yeah i figured the 2 would be harder to drive than say a 180 but probably slightly quicker around corners dunno.gif they are both around 1300KG.

Its not a dayly but want to be able to drive to track & take out on the odd weekend, will strip it etc as cops are not a problem.

S13 with Sr20 is the only decent contender to the MR2 i think:
Cheaper parts
Cheaper to buy & more to choose from.
Preffer hardtop...90% of 2's are targa.

Comes with free air-conditioning tongue.gif

S13 and R32's make good platforms for fairly inexpensive SuperHappyFunBudgetTrackCar

Otherwise S14's are starting to come into that range, with a bit more in the looks department if your driving it on the street as well.

9krpms: I dont know how accurate that is. T2 you dont have to turn in so late, t5 you dont have to hug the exit so much. Im normally in the middle of the road before turning into t6. And you seem to turn in too early at the last corner t7.

My 2 cents but as I say I dont know how accurate the drive line shown on that map is

Thanks for the 2cents wink.gif I will give that a try next time.
It would be nice if you could collect some data from your run next time Rob.

why not just buy the MR-S and get the sequential gearbox as well then. seems pointless to put the expensive motor in the old ones when the new ones are so nicer. $24k for the car, and $3k for TRD to do some upgrades biggrin.gif

for your budget i could think of a few cars that are better than your options, but you have to like the car otherwise its no fun.

or you could just get an mx5 and save yourself a big pile of cash (which you could then spend on making it faster)

i already suggested that, he doesnt like them sad.gif i mena whats not to like. $12k for the car, $5K for turbo upgrade, and another $3k for suspension, tyres and chassis braces.

MEV09
Post #1011

yeah to be honest after seeing them in action if i was on strict budget i would be heading for a mx-5.

jezza323
Post #1012

mx5 will handle better (and therefore be more fun, IMO) than those other heavy ass cars anyway tongue.gif

GTRVspec95
Post #1013

Isn't the only thing that really lets the MX-5 down is that when you put to much power through the drive line you start doing boxes and drive shafts ?

But you can transfer the Rx7 running gear into them ?

I think we discussed this before but it's interesting none the less to nut it out as a potential track car build

Minko
Post #1014

All this peer-pressure by the MX-5 lovers club ill have to go test drive one today & see what all the fuss is about.

jezza323
Post #1015

best part is there is a whole racing series dedicated to them in QLD, so you can get plenty of track time! smile.gif
