Figured i should actually post one of these up here. this car has been my project since the start of this year. It’s a 1989 Mazda MX-5 Hardtop with a rotary conversion.

The engine is a 12A-T built by Rotamotion down in Perth. It has some mild porting, Ceramic Seals and modified oil galleries. The engine has only done around 6000km's since being rebuilt. Currently it is only running 6psi, when tuned to around 14psi we would be expecting around 250kw. The injection Manifold and turbo were donated from a Series 5 RX-7. Getting the fuel from the tank is handled by a Bosch 044 fuel pump, and all operations are controlled by a Wolf 3D Version 4 ECU. Air intake is cooled via a Water-to-Air Intercooler. It has a separate reservoir and cools the water through a VW Golf radiator. Usually the car runs around ambient temperature for the intake but can drop severely in the colder weather. The lowest we had it back in April was 19 degrees, though we are yet to try it in this weather. Excess engine heat is removed by a Commodore radiator mounted just behind the VW one, and has a larger thermo fan to help as well.

Behind the engine is the Series 6 RX-7 gearbox. The clutch is an eXedy heavy duty one and is still fairly new. A custom driveshaft is being made for the vehicle at this moment and will connect to a new differential and half shafts. The previous diff was a smaller, Viscous LSD and decided that it didn’t want to live anymore, so we were forced to upgrade. This new housing is from an FD RX-7 with a Kaaz 2-Way in it.

The current suspension system consists of Eibach Springs and Koni AGX adjustable shocks. All bushes have been replaced with Nolathane parts and a custom rear sway-bar has been installed. Braking is handled by a set of Drilled, Slotted and Vented rotors up front all with Metal King Pads.

Thats basically it so far. Still got so much work to do on it though. here are a few old pictures of it. The engine bay is actually different to that now, its just we havent had a chance to take any new pics of it since its covered in dust and oil. that and the driveline is still in pieces sad.gif

1989 Mazda MX-5 + 12A-T = a whole lot of fun in 950kg's
