Its actually worse in the states... well depends which state... but over there cars dont get confiscated they get crushed and for street racing you do get a record... my cousin lives in Texas.,,, his car only races on the track for that reason

Well then that's all my questions answered, my steering wheel is legal, my ride height is legal, my wheels are legal, exhaust is legal, im all good! As i thought and im sure most others did, i thought it was any mod other than standard, regardless if its still classed as legal, and well game over.

here is a quote from a pm from a police traffic branch officer on cb that i had pm'd
so anyone changing factory exhaust noise levels or sizes beware

QUOTE

The laws in relation to mods/defects has not changed. Nothing will now become illegal that wasn't before.

The implications of getting caught has changed. i.e going to court/impound/ Forfeiture will now happen.

By the way .. is your cars exhaust louder than standard? This is the area where a lot of people will be struggling.

If it is, the offence is Modify silencing device so as to reduce efffectiveness. This is one of the impound offences.

This is not to be confused with the more serious offence of over the decibel limit (Defect) which is also an impound offence.

Everyone thinks it has to be over the decibel limit. THIS IS WRONG.

If you change an exhaust and reduce it's silencing effectiveness from standard you are going to court.

Regards
Cameron

It is the minor of the two BUT still an impound offence.

I welcome the new laws. I cant wait to see how pwned our courts get. 3 year waiting lists anyone? By the time the court date rolls around, you wont be interested in the car scene anymore anyway tongue.gif And if its your 3rd (4th...) offence, you can basically go hoon everywhere for the entire waiting list time cause its not like you've got anything more to lose.

90db for anything after 1984, 96db for anything pre 1984 tongue.gif YAY for my 84 RX7 biggrin.gif

But as stated even if its under the db limit you can still be defected (now, impounded) if its louder then it was standard. As this is classed as "changing the effectiveness (is thats a word) of the silencing device (this this case, the exhaust)"

Take that from somebody who gets picked up on exhaust noise all the time laugh.gif

As for 100db, 100db isnt that loud tongue.gif 114db at idle FTW. 120+ at peak revs bowrofl.gif

For all the people that want to sell their modified cars: How do you plan to get any sort of money for your cars if the new buyer faces having their car impounded 5 minutes after purchase?

Also how does the state plan on making money on these illegally modified cars at auction when they are forfeited?

Maybe they're going to send the hectic bits to Lebanon?

nah they will wait for the people to leave the auction house, with the cars. Then as they are pulling out of the drive way, the impound the car.

read this part again, it means any noise above standard is defectable, also note interstate cars are now defectable as of 1/07/07, which sucks

already spoken 2 traffic officer on cb, as well as coomera traffic branch, they will be enforcing the rules, it always has been there however not strictly used but with the new anti hooning its a simple way 2 get all car enthusiests off the streets, as nearly everyone of us will have a modded exhaust.
worst part is on my car i dont know what exhaust guidelines i have 2 follow, whether it is the original chassis ones, or the stock exhaust 2 suit the engine that was put in, not even the police have been able 2 tell me on that, unsure.gif

A copy of my post on CB:

**********NOBODY PANIC********

Just spoke to Traffic Branch.

The onlything that has changed is the penality i.e. you go to court.

and

if busted for an offence under the same 'umberella' i.e illegal mods, in a 3 year period.... you get 48 hours with the car you were driving when busted (yours or not)

e.g.

You can have an after market steering wheel as long as is is of the legal size and not made of wood (for example)

you can have an after market exhaust....as long as it complys with noise limits etc, etc, etc.

Basically..... no more fines and loss of points.... every offence goes to court where the penality is decided by the magistrate.

So....... do the right thing and you'll be fine. Don't let the Government and do-gooders in society win. Keep it legal and stay on the road.

So....

If it was a legal modification that does not require a Mod Plate..... it still doesn't (eg steering wheel)
If it was a legal modification that requires a mod plate..... it still does ( eg engine conversion )

There are no new laws.... just the way in which penalities are dished out have changed. i.e. off to court for a lot of things now.

Remember this is not in Brizzy or the Gold Coast.(yet)

i was always under the impression that you had to meet the guidelines for the new engine. Seeing as you cant be an engine thats older than the chasis of the car into it.

So the car has to meet all the requirements that the original car had to meet in regards to the engine. ie noise / emissions ect.

if that makes sense...

thats what i was hoping 4, as it currently has the stock exhaust size running of the current engine setup, however its still something i am worried about as police traffic branches havent been able 2 clarify it, so im just hoping it isnt something left 2 officers discretion as that wud mean each one could say the opposite, ohnoes.gif

I think the amount of police chases will greatly increase if such laws are introduced. most wouldnt be willing to hand the keys of their money pit over to the po po, and would flog the crap out of it trying to get away..

thing are going to get alot more dangerous, they arent helping anything.

sorry phil, lol, mind went blank, so when u gonna do another cruise like u did a while back when u had the vn?
though prob be better for us all to start nsw cruising now with these laws, and something 4 a bit more fun and different

Well this is kinda gonna fuck me up a bit.

Im turning 16 soon and once i get my license im looking for a car.

So basicly this is putting me into the spot where I either mod or be defected and impounded if repeated?

Also how much do mod plates cost to get?

Well you will probably fall under all the new laws and will pretty much not have that problem really.

As you will be limited to what cars you are allowed to drive.
