Just watched a report on A Current Affair about a Japanese Import place where they wind back the odometers on the cars to make it look like they have less milage, hence increasing the price.

in some examples the KM's had been put back about 90,000k's!

If you're in Queensland you may still be able to catch it becuase Vic is an hour ahead.

I think its a pretty poor effort to trick people into spending more...

Your just hearing about this now? It has been rumoured (pretty much truth) for years and years!

ud be amazed at the amount of car yards that do it

i never worry about the kms on a car when purchasing

the condition of the car tells the true story

a car can have 80000kms and have a flogged out motor

while a well maintained car with 160000kms can have a motor in much better condition

bowrofl.gif I guess mine has been then, 40,XXX k's for a 10 year old car i dont think so!

zirtech is right though you can tell by the condition of the car on how its been treated.

Wound back odo's on imports? It's almost to be expected.

My 15 year old car had 83,000 on it when I got it, only 5,500 a year!

In a year and a three months I've clocked it up to 115,000. Thats 25,000 in a year laugh.gif

ive heard of this being done, actually i think one of my friends duz it but im not sure and im too scared to ask tongue.gif he he but yeah, really it wouldnt be hard to do if u knew ur car well, but neone who knew nething about cars would notice if the ks had been wound back 90xxxkz lol

it can be done on ne car, just make sure when u buy a car u make sure whatever number is on the rego paper is on the car

Nvious
Post #14

I guess the only way is to look at the aesthetics of the car and compare them to the Odometer KMs......

meh, it only tricks the ppl who believe in it.

you can tell by the engine condition any way

Another thing to do is a VCheck cert on cars that have been here a while, mine was newly registered in 2003 with 64,500 by a dealer, then two transfers with very little K's, and then between the last entry and the guy I bought it from (since K's are only marked when rego transfers), it had done upto the 83,000. This did strike me as odd, but I wasn't overly worried, the condition of the car was great, and I looked at a few smile.gif

mm definatly expected. But thinking bout it who wants to travel big distances in japan going like 20 km/h for like a 3 hr trip

(tokyo drift is bullshit, ive been to japan) but there is some roads liek that where u can go very fast but the highway isnt that big

MYB16
Post #18

but i thought Japanese drivers only drove around 5,000km a year due to the fact that they have such high highway/city taxes to use roads... laugh.gif

Plus they are wound back whilst still in Japan, its not Illegial over there is it??

noosa_boy: there are 3 levels of highways in some places...the highway isnt that big, lol.

As Scuzzy said, if you are concerned about the 'milage' of a car you are buying, that V-Check will sort you straight out smile.gif

A few months after purchasing my 180, i looked at one of the japanese stickers in the door jam. It must be a service sticker and the km,s were quite a few kays over what the speedo said! Oh well!

Damn, my skyline had like just over 92thou on the clock when I got it.

12 year old car.

I missed the show, did they mention what import yard?

EVOLVE
Post #22

^^^^I'm guessing every importer and dealer do it to ertain vehicles so it can sell quicker.

It's not hard to do it, just flick the lock and turn, but the trick is don't go lower then your last recorded klms with the transport department (not really a trick, its pretty logical)

Alex GTST
Post #23

Hmmm, the thing being is the yard I got my car from are now as I found out, bit on the dodgy side.

Sold a car to a guy with a cracked head. (The car had the cracked head not the guy, just to clear that up for you easily confused folk)

My car had holes in the boot from a previous spoiler, which they didn't mention to me, told them about it, they said, oh we must have missed it.

They said send us some pics, so I did, then their reply was, well what would you like us to do about the holes? The car has already gone.

my sister lives in japan and just clock 5000kms on her car in just under 2 years that she has had it. she drives everywhere and doesnt catch the train. most of the street in japan at 40km/h and highways are very expensive so you dont often go on them.

LUDEcrs
Post #25

Any car, not just imports can have wound back clocks, its not rocket science, its just its much harder with digital speedo's these days.

In 02 I believe Holden introduced a prevailent, to the Monaro's anyway.... if the Monaro is over 100,000km's the clock can't be wound back without spending about $3K. You can't swap odometers in them apparently either... whether or not this is true, is just speculation at this time.

Anyone care to comment?

Well the other car I have, I've had it for like just over 2 years, only done just over 20thou on the clock.

Dont buy an import off of a dealership. No import in any yard has true k's on it.

So buying one privately would be alright? How did imports get here in the first place, most likely through dealers.

My friend got a soarer not to long ago it has 171,000klms and was in oz for only 2 years and the dude left it in storage for a while. Since its a 92 model we saw these as genuine klms so he got it even though there was another with with 100,000klm less at the same price but was a little worse for wear.
