He wouldnt go 4wding with rims like that or with the airbrushing nor have an exhaust system like that

Its most likely just for show

For practical reasons four wheel drives/bush bashers have to have them out the side sometimes because there diff is a crazy heavy duty set up with heavy shock absorbers and springs and by the time they have modded that part of the truck there is sometimes little room plus by directing the pipes out to the side like that it avoices undercarriage damage to them. Or like this tossers done he has put them out the side tongue.gif

where can i find out if there legal or not?

Side pipes are Illegal in australia!!!

Unless they came standard with the car (such as an AC Cobra etc...)

OR... an alternative, you can have the pipes, but have them as dummys, and run the working exhaust and dump it before the rear axle.

Im sure there are exceptions tho... tongue.gif

i think you will find they can be engineered for DOT. Though they MUST exit past the last winding window - also must pass through a catalytic converter (of course)

I enquired about this a while ago with DOT on a coupe, and as long as the pipes exited around the rear quarter glass it was ok. Though there may have been changed to QLD Legislation since then.

Just check with your local DOT.

actually Side pipes are legal if they meet the correct regulations, the vehicle must have the minimum clearances (which means most cars would require Lift kits) and they must exit after the door jambs or windows as stated above. Southport Exhaust Ute use to have side exit pipes and sounded absolutely terrific, and was legal.

the exhaust has to pass over the rear axel if it came stock like that

For Queensland anyway;

• The exhaust outlet must extend at least 40mm beyond
the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floor
pan that is not continuously welded or permanently
sealed which could permit direct access of exhaust
gases to the passenger compartment, but not beyond
the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan.

• The exhaust outlet, if to the side of the vehicle, must
discharge to the right hand side of
the vehicle and downwards at an
angle to the horizontal of not less
than 15 degrees and not more than
45 degrees.

• The exhaust outlet, if to the rear of
the vehicle, must discharge at not
more than 10 degrees above or 45
degrees below the horizontal.

But as moe has said, if it came stock (such as a Cobra) you wouldn't have a problem.

As said before with the suspention setups on hardcore 4x4's they leave little to no room for exhausts out the rear so they put it out the side.

Also any ute/4x4 only needs an exhaust that exits past the cabin. It does not require to go out the back of the tray.

thats the same with low, low, low cars.

looks cool on the shoebox generation of cars.

If you have a low car, there is no room for side pipes. Unless you cut into the body work??

I'd say most of the Cobra's getting around would be kit cars. So there'd be some conjecture there

they're considered 'new' cars, if that helps. that's why you need an engine built in the last five years to put in them sad.gif
