So, the QLD Gov wants us off the streets and onto safe and appropriate tracks aye?
I dont think they want that at all. If they do, then why the hell have they pressured Mt Cotton to ban drift days on the skidpans?
And yes its official. I called Mt Cotton this morning and was told directly that any drifting is now BANNED on Mt Cottons skidpans.
The QLD Gov says that its not the image they wish to have associated with a driver training facility such as Mt Cotton.

Well done QLD Gov. you are todays winners of the MOST STUPID DECISION EVER competition.

Sad to see this, but unfortunatly a matter of time. I recieved a letter from "Honourable Judy Spence MP, Minister for Police and Corrective Services" which had this little titbit which i found amusing in regards to facilities for people to congegrate at.

QUOTE
I note you have suggested providing more off-road driving facilities for car enthusiasts to provide a venue where motoring can be enjoyed without the constraint of the anti-hooning legislation. Unfortunately however, the road safety benefit of providing venues for people who wish to race may not be supported by research. A study undertaken by Kloeden, McLean and Glonek (2002) from the Centre for Automotive Safety Research at the University of Adelaide found that racing in a controlled environment does not reduce the incidence of speeding on a public road. Therefore, while facilities such as those which you suggested may attract drivers currently illegally racing on public streets, it is unlikely to reduce the incidence of "hooning" behaviour on public roads and may not result in improved road safety benefits. The Queensland Government is continually monitoring new developments in road safety and will review and consider any research into providing off-road racing facilities.

So its a 4 year old study theyre relying on to blatantly bring in more revenue, without doing anything to help the growing problem they have, with "hoon" behaviour............

doesnt surprise me honestly

beattie government doesnt spend a cent on obvious problems unless there is huge public outcry from the majority of voters

most voters wouldnt want tax dollars to pay for a race track they dont use, or in this case, a driver training facility catering for young people

Thats the biggest crock of shit I've read this year hands down well done Judy Spence

You can't tell me something like QR's Friday night drift practice does not get kids off the street ... it's grown from a handful of enthusiats out there in the dark to a full catered and lit event attracting hundreds of drivers and spectators which would normally be out on the street if it weren't for events which catered to drift.

Instead of arguing about how "stupid" the government is and how much of a "dumbass" Judy Spence is.

How about we start up a petition thread or do up a petition to take along to get signed on cruise nights to send in to the Hon Judy Spence MP.

*** Save QLD Drift Cruise *** could be an option to get a petition signed??????

Then attach a well written letter explaining why we think it would be feasable to put in place more "off the street motor-vehicle usage areas" and how we know as car enthusiasts that it would bring people off hte stret to do what they do in a controlled environment.

Of course it will not bring all of the car enthusiast as therre will always be a few uninteligent people who will prefer to "fang one out" on the street but a lot of the car enthusiast will take to this idea.

next thing they will do is reduce speed limits to cater for older people who do not feel comfortable doing 100 km/h on the highway ...

whilst i agree that banning drift days, closing down tracks etc is stupid... the fact is that most people out there are not willing to pay the fees involved in participating in track events, the fees charged due to massive public liabilty costs...

The car scene is full of people who take their interest in motorsport not quite as seriously as their interest in doin a hectic burnout to pull tha chicks...

Thats not the point. Now, even if they are willing to pay the fee's and get on the track, they can't do what they want because 'drifting is banned'. Queensland - The Smart State? I don't think so rolleyes.gif

angry.gif How pathetic. Is australia one big retirement village?
"This is not the image they want to portray at a driver training facility" !?!
What’s with this constant association that the gov have whereby drifting is hooning? They don’t have a damn clue. I suppose Its human nature to feel threatened by something they don’t understand, so they try and make it go away dry.gif

Very disappointed.

This is ridiculous....

Unfortunately.... as someone previously stated... Its due to the whinging locals...

I had an argument with one after the last drift day that i did out there.

Intollerant old people who bought their houses well after the facility was established...

Funnily enough probably the same old people who will be the first to complain about illegal hoon activities on the road.

Cheers

If only QR could come up with a better skidpan setup in there carpark it'd be super handy . at least it would negate the use for haveing the problems with mt cotton,

as it is they now sound test on skidpan days anyway .

well I'm sure (I say sure after researching the idea over 4 years) someone out there will create a 'driver training' centre where people can use a skidpan.

By closing down the skidpan at Mt Cotton you have just had your best compeditor taken out. If you were to find enough companies for sponsorship.. you could easly build a driver training centre.

And yes that does include public liability, it's cheaper to get insurance for that then it is to get insurance for a paintball field.

Well done qld gov't... u obviously noticed alot during your study of the sport over the last 4 years.
For example... oh i dont know... the huge amount the sport has grown in australia over the last four years.

There were no where near as many drift cars in 2002 as in 2006, so while the number of "hoon cars" has gone up the number of "hoon" charges laid has stayed at a constant rate. That means that the ratio of fast cars, to fast on-road drivers has DECREASED!
"Oh wow! I never though of it like that, I wonder why that is?"
It is because these new fast drivers are taking out their urges for speed and sideways action in a SAFE CONTROLLED AREA, not on suburban streets. It may not get rid of dickheads in vn's wraping themselves around trees, but it certainly gets rid of the more extreme versions.

wat a bunch of dipshits. Im 17 and i can figure that out!

I'm in WA so i'm not affected, but I feel for u guys, good luck with it.
I'd sign the petition if i could.

I hate the fact that this has happened.
Mt Cotton is where i first slid my first RWD car around a track (wet or not).
I had hoped that this would be somewhere for those who dont have the car/setup to slide at QR, to enjoy the feeling of letting loose.

I try to get out to QR as often as time/money permits. This is a hobby.

The government has seen a bunch of foolish idiots skidding around the streets. They decide that a bunch of figures are good enough to close down any facility that may condone or increase the number of 'hoons' on QLD streets.
Example:
I went and saw the newest Fast and the Furiuous (i like watching cars drift... as corny as the film may be) upon leaving the cinema i counted about 5-6 seperate cases of kids doing burnouts and skids. This destroys any image that those who drive a car used to drift at a track, but use the car as a daily driver.
The government is taking the easy way out. According to a marketing campain we are the 'Smart State'... Try showing it QLD

We are the ones who make the difference, and yet we cop the slack of the idiots.

I vent - Forums are for this.

Sadly the idiots will eventually loose their licences or their lives.... Even worse they bring us down with them.

My 2 Cents.... Enjoy =)

I'm in vic, but as 'vp_s_wagon' said, if i could sign the petition i would.
I love the sport of drift and the environment and culture that it brings into the country. No longer is it just Japan, but the entire world!!!

Feel sorry for you guys, wish we had the power to help, but we seem to have our own problems...bloody new p plate laws!!! (don't affect me, but they are still shite, same as NSW next year.)

...My 2cents...

Aaron

P.S. I'm 18 and recently wrote-off my car, on a dirt road with corrigations and doing nothing stupid, simply came down to inexperience...There you go QLD, you can prevent those accidents if you WANTED TO!!!
