should i buy this blown backtop sr20det from a 1997 180sx for around 200-250. The Head is ok but the block is knackered.. No idea whats wrong with the motor except the block has a huge gaping hole on one side, was in good working condition before this.. so what should i do buy it and rebuild it or just buy a sr20det motor straight up..?? cheers |

That's up to you and your budget/time. Me personally...I wouldn't buy an engine that needed a new block. That's the strongest part...and if that's damaged...I'd hate to know how it got to that. |

You cannot rebuild a motor with a hole in the block. The tiniest crack in the block fucks with its structural integrity. At work we have a few engines that we specially check for cracks (202, 4g54). Cracks can be repaired, holes cannot. |

You could keep your bottom end and put the DET head on it, it will line up (oil galleries / water jackets). To lower the compression you could chuck in a thicker head gasket, however, changing the compression ratio in this way (thick head gaskets and shaving heads) can lead to problems while raplacing things such as timing belts. |

if u get a after market ecu, a turbo sr20de can be a very nice motor. but keep in mind that u cant pull the sorts of power figures out of it as u can the det. u could push about 170-180kw at the wheels safely, and it would have the nice bottom end, just throw in a head gasket, to drop the comp. ratio down a little bit... and it would be a nice car to drive to. but make sure u took it to a very reputable tuner, as the ramp onto boost and higher comp ratio can = disaster if the tuneing isnt richer as the boost comes on. just a thought.... hope it helps. |
