You do realise that the odo is not for the motor, it's for the vehicle.
Replacing it because you have changed the motor is stupid. It's more important to know the true age of the suspension / bushes / brakes / shocks etc etc than the wreckers motor you just shoved between the strut towers.

You can change odometer but it needs to be logged with the transport dept. or possible jail time if you sell on the car

Anyone who buys a car on the km's alone isn't making a smart decision though. I recently bought a car with 200 on rather than one with 125 because I knew there was a bunch of crap replaced which I would then not have to worry about. That and the car with 200 wasn't coming out of an overgrown backyard in Goodna with several other unrego'd cars in the yard lol


Each time a car is registered or transferred the odo reading is noted on the paperwork. If you quote the km is lower than the last rego, it'll probably raise a red flag

Thats true but its just stupid when people get rebuilt motors then want to put the odometer back to zero, like yeah suddenly the whole car is just new now!

OP the smartest thing to do is record the km on the odometer when you put the motor in and keep track of the km on the motor. That way when you sell it you can say xxx km on the car (odometer reading) and xxx on the motor. That way you don't have to deal with QT and paying people to reset you odometer but when you sell it you can show you have kept good records (pics, receipts etc ) and the buyer should have no reason not to believe you.

Ok by law you are NOT allowed to change ot alter the odometer reading unless its broken ,and if its broken the new cluster has to be wound to the same Kms as the old one ,

I honestly don't see the need to replace the odo.
It's not broken so the only thing i see going on here is the intent to mislead someone.

yeha if you're selling it you'd say in the ad "car has 300,000km, engine 150,000" or similar, like everyone else
there is no reason to change odo

I don't know about you guys, but I'd find it pretty convenient for servicing and maintenance sake to have the odometer on 0 if I had a freshly rebuilt engine.
Especially so if I'd replaced a whole heap of suspension and steering components at the same time.

It's obviously easier to just write down the reading, but I'm not known to do things the easy way.

Write the odo down and be done with it. Shit most places who service cars put a little sticker in the corner of the windscreen, why not put one of those in yourself, or do what I do and keep a record book in the glovebox with receipts stapled to pages/handwritten lists of what was done and when, and if you use your vehicle for work it's easy come tax time.

Basically i bought a car with an engine swap the body of the car has 320k on it and the guy told me he swapped the engine so it had 60k and he does not hve the paper work for it how do I found out how much kilometres the engine has??

If there's no documentation then there's no real way to know.

Ideally the engine swap would be registered with transport department and the number of k's on the engine along with engine number change, etc.

Nutshell,if the body has 320,000 kilometers on it,I don't think you would have paid half Canada's national debt for it,so as the general consensus from the thread you've managed to exhume (well done in finding it).is worry more about the age of the vehicle components than the engine,and thank you for coming to Boostcruising (and Australia) for your advice

odometer is recorded with any RWC, normally proceeding a sale where is recorded, was always in Vcheck ,as well as engine number changes, but oddly enough, klms were never recorded with engine number changes.

If you alter an odometer to less than the last recorded reading for ANY reason, be prepared for some questions.

VK,it would appear this person hails from Canada,and it appears their biggest bugbear over there is emission control,so I would say this is probably the reason for the question

Is this true?" I would just leave the original ODO and put a note on the engine and in the glovebox
