Ok guys, asking this question on behalf of a female friend. She's been having problems with her VZ SS. Assures me it's never been flogged and serviced by a mechanics regularly. 160k kms on the clock. I can't get to see the car firsthand which makes things tricky. QUOTE (Friend) so its a 2004 VY SS Automatic. I've had the car for 2 yrs and its been fine up until about 5 months ago when it started to rev up when getting out of first gear into second. after it got into second gear it drove normally..but about 3 weeks ago it started not being able to even get out of second gear..all it does is rev real loud trying to change gears but it won't. holden replaced something in the gearbox (maybe they were called the pistons???) i don't remember. that cost $300 and it didn't work. so now they said we need to replace to whole gear box for a bit more than $2500 Basically, just asking if anybody could take an educated guess at a potential problem? Apparently the Holden dealership they see is trustworthy, but always helps to get a second opinion. Cheers -------------------- "We are all heading there. We will all die; we will all be in a lot of pain. It's all coming out way. It's inevitable. It's part of life... but in the mean time, you may as well be a f'king savage and live your life the way you want to live. You put your best effort in, your best foot forward and train like a motherfcuker."

Most of the guys at holden are useless, take it to a transmission joint. |

Auto I assume? Sounds like the solenoids(pistons) are not keeping line pressure up in the box. Most likely going to need a rebuild(or get a new one from Holmart for around $900 delivered + labour + transmission fluid) |

Take it to a Transmission Shop - seriously.. Holden dealer guys, aren't that well trained in autos, they go from the scan tool to the parts counter and if that doesn't fix it then they all agree it needs a new one. Rarely do they look at the workshop manual, that takes up too much time. Go to CLICK -> ATRA click on member lists and find a reputable transmission shop for a second opinion, might save you hundreds. |

Unfortunately she went ahead and booked in for the gearbox swap already. I'll see if she can keep the box, might give it a quick once over when I go back that direction next. |

PS: A Mafless tune probably would have allowed her to keep the gearbox in its current state, alters line pressures etc to make it shift smoother yet firmer etc |
