Video shows the final moments before a 20-year-old texting driver killed 13 elderly churchgoers

HOUSTON — A witness says the driver of a pickup truck that collided with a church minibus in rural Texas, killing 13 people, acknowledged he had been texting while driving — a development that highlights the dangers of sending messages on smartphones while behind the wheel.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Conrad Hein wouldn’t comment Friday on whether texting might have played a role in the Wednesday collision on a two-lane road about 75 miles west (120 km) of San Antonio, near the town of Concan. But officials have said the truck driver appeared to have crossed the center line.

Jennifer Morrison, the investigator in charge of the team from the National Transportation Safety Board, would only say that distracted driving will be among the issues investigated.

The witness who is saying the pickup driver was texting while driving recounted the incident Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. Jody Kuchler, a 55-year-old self-employed welder, said he and his girlfriend were driving back to their home in the nearby town of Leakey when he came across a truck that was driving erratically across the road.

“He kept going off the road and into oncoming traffic and he just kept doing that,” said Kuchler, who first shared the account of what happened with the San Antonio Express-News.

Kuchler, who followed the truck for at least 15 minutes, said he called the sheriff’s offices for both Uvalde and Real counties and told them “they needed to get him off the road before he hit somebody.”

Satirist John Clarke, of Clarke and Dawe fame, dies aged 68

Clarke was born in New Zealand but made his name as a comedian and political satirist in Australia after arriving in the 1970s.

For 27 years, he has appeared on Australian television conducting mock interviews and skewering politicians with his comedy partner, Bryan Dawe.

The pair was best known for the Clarke and Dawe segment on the ABC's 7.30 program.

Clarke was a man of diverse talents — a comedian, actor and writer of television, film and stage musicals.

He came to attention in his native New Zealand in the 1970s with the TV series Fred Dagg, a satirical take on the country bloke.

He co-wrote the multi-award winning mockumentary The Games, about the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, which aired in 1999 and 2000.

He also co-wrote stage musicals The Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and Little Ragged Blossom.

His books included A Dagg at My Table, The Howard Miracle and The 7.56 Report.

Clarke was bushwalking in Victoria over the weekend when he died.

Politicians, sportspeople and members of the public have used social media to pay tribute to his contribution to Australia.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Clarke was the "sharpest, driest wit on Aussie TV", and Greens leader Richard Di Natale called him a leading light of satire.

best keep the dragon happy or you'll have to move again. mamoru.gif

It'll take you a while to settle in, and if you're anything like me, once you have things unpacked you'll move it three times until you're happy with the layout of everything. mamoru.gif
