Isnt that the thrower that was on ACA or something? and has cause a bit of trouble at meets? |

Oh lordy at first I thought it was one of those things, clowns with the wrong tools doing the job, but the Audi A/C compressor failures seem to be across the board, I would be changing the receiver drier and oil every year just to save the grief, or at least delay it You don't really have to go to these extremes, the main thing is to use your A/C regularly. The oil is in the system, purely to lubricate the compressor, and the weak link in the system,is the compressor shaft seal.It relies on a film of oil, between two highly polished surfaces to keep the refrigerant contained,so when not in use, high ambient temperatures, plus radiant heat from the engine, increases the pressure of the refrigerant and it will start to push the oil from between these mating surfaces,if successful, the refrigerant will escape, until the A/C is used again, and the oil is forced back into the seal.So by using your A/C regularly will ensure that the shaft seal remains lubricated. Some modern vehicles have the A/C circuit connected to the reverse light circuit ,so every time the vehicle is put into reverse, the A/C will run,for this reason. If I don't use the wife's old car for a couple of days, the next time I start it,the A/C is turned on by the computer, automatically.Climate Control is one of the best systems to have in a vehicle,as the compressor runs all of the time, and the temperature set point is regulated by the heater flap and tap.Air Conditioning is also the best way to demist your windows. It is a semi-hermetic system, that will do its job for 100 years (lifespan of the gas),provided everything stays in its proper place. If you don't think it's operating efficiently, get it checked, might save you some heartache later So nutshell;USE IT,OR LOSE IT Here endeth the lesson |

Shuffs, that covered it so well, the failure points are the O rings and the compressor seal. The lack of use one is so true, by the sounds of it, you are or have been in the A/C game, you would have heard " it was working fine last summer, I turned it on and it's not working", by then hopefully they haven't been running the compressor dry. |

There is so much to learn about Air con. It baffles me the amount of theory involved. We got a taste of it during 2nd year auto electrical. Mind fcuked the first time you hear it...then it gets a little easier... |

The Audi issue from what I have read, is a plastic part in the compressor that fails in all models and has a catastrophic pump failure effect, no doubt the aftermarket will pick up on this as Audi will only give a fk for 3 years. Yes VK,35 years,to be exact, mainly commercial refrigeration, but refirgeration is the same principle, whether it be vehicle A/C,transport refrigeration,or Supermarket refrigeration.Sometimes a different refrigerant is used to get the desired result (just as there are higher octane fuels for high performance engines)R12 (phased out because it was killing penguins)was the best all round refrigerant ever,it would quite happily do its job in a domestic fridge, vehicle A/C,or a Minus thirty degree freezer.R134a (replacement for R12)runs out of balls, when you ask it to pull low temperatures. Most of my vehicle A/C exposure occurred in the 16 years I worked at Norco maintaining the vehicle fleet.Unfortunately for me,when Norco started to list,I jumped ship to work for a private company, and all of their work followed me out of the door. Yes O rings are also a time bomb,to a lesser extent,I had to replace the whole (Sanden) compressor on the wife's car, because a twenty cent O ring was leaking oil (not refrigerant) and not available as a spare part.I image searched that Audi R8 photo, and came up with the link to the R8 Forum, and yes there certainly appears to be quite a few R8 owners experiencing that problem..... not good. ![]() There is so much to learn about Air con. Im doing that course next year as well as the air con course by itself after I finish this one (auto electrical) Good on you,the more irons you have in the fire, the better. You will be a very handy person to know in a couple of years time, not that you aren't now judging by some of the jobs you have posted on here ![]() |

Agree about the R12 too, I had a bottle for many years, saved many an old classic I've got two,and nothing to use it on at present,a 'P' size bottle (same size a 9Kg propane bottle) was costing in excess of $8,000 in the final stages of phase out,and like you there are a few old cars getting around here.with 'Shuff's Whale Killer' in them.Topped up for no charge I might add. |

Yeah, there was a great market for the recovered gas when going through the changeover phase, most systems seem to be ok with r134 IF you upgrade the condensor as well. |

Sick to death of idiots using their mobiles whilst driving. From QE2 to Autobarn on Kessels Rd,i spotted 3 p platers texting and half dozen other spastics doing the same shit. In among all the "non australian" drivers barely keeping it in the lane, I grew up in Sunnybank and I still piss myself when Chinese mates swear "fn asians", Mains and Kessels Rds would have to be a bikers nightmare. I lost count of the amount of mirrors and quarter panels my poor old beach Hilux took out on Mains Rd, all I was doing was staying in my lane, fn sad really, nice top end cars as well. |

I already have about 4 in the fridge still from when Coles had them on spesh, 2 for $5 at Coles is a better price, plus I hate woolies yeah I know it's a bit of a claytons special, but it's better than paying full price /50c more ![]() bought banana/strawberry/chocolate beside I had to try and derail this thread somehow by talking about non car related stuff. unless you want to know something about airconditioning. ![]() |
