Hi guys
I am having trouble setting the timing on my CA18DET with my timing light.

History is -

- Was converted from Auto to Manual about 2 years ago
- Running an Air Pod
- Timing belt changed about a year ago

I have checked cam pulleys and they line up ok, belt is ok, tensioner is ok

To get the timing from 12-15 degrees I need the C.A.S to be hard over to clockwise.

I have searched and searced and found this a a common issue on conversions but have not found a solution.

Any ideas,

I am looking for a solution, or a good mechanic who can be trusted and wont rip me off- even a BC member who knows of the prob. happy to throw a few notes over..Im on the GC (Upper Coomera)

Thanx guys

the c.a.s could be a tooth out??? u might of pulled it out when checking the timing belt and put it back in a tooth out?? maybe rake the c.a.s out and turn it 1 tooth anti clockwise and see how u go.

how are you checking the timing if you are using the loop at the back it will be about 10 deg out lift off the cover and put it around the no 1 coil wiring and set it to 15 deg this should be about half way on the cas also check your tps that it is under .4 of a volt or this will through out the timing and wait untill the car is at opperating temp the other things that will change it are thicker head gaskets adj cam gears for example good luck mate

This. Common fault.

Set engine to TDC, remove CAS, rotate cas and reinstall

CA18 CAS has a half moon in the center of the key way, so there is no way you can't get the cas out of sync with the camshaft.
I'd say the timing belt has been set wrong, exhaust cam is a tooth out.

that was the issue with my 32, the new owner sent me a pm saying they found that

also, for some reason is pretty common for the half moon key way to get snapped off

how much timing do you want? 15 deg is normal i think

Unless it is a euro CA18DET the base timing should be set at 10 degrees +-2 BTDC..

Another common fault is the spline of the keyway on the exhaust cam can fail causing timing issues, but it would be sporadic jumping around of timing that would indicate that particular fault..

I agree that it sounds like the timing is out by a tooth, the CA18 can be tricky to set correctly...

you cas maybe wired up wrong, you might be receiving an inverted signal from it, which will be 90deg out of phase, with what it should be, had the same thing when i made my HEI unit for my mazda, has them round the wrong way to start with and couldnt get the engine to run under 20deg advance, swapped the cas outputs around and he presto

ECCS runs optic sensors which output a square wave pattern = if you did wire them wrong it don't run. Unlike HIE with a PG input which will look for the falling edge of a analogue signal, wire up wrong=delayed signal
