i only heard about them not too long ago but were they only released in the states or what ?

does anyone know if they're decent engines considering they're a 2.4ltr

would they be a prick to source parts for if you bought one over here from overseas and wacked it in a car as opposed to an sr20 or ca18

ALSO !!!!!!!!!! does anyone know why mitsubishi eclipses werent released over here ? anyone ever drove one, are they shit or what i think some models look alright.

i don't know my nissan's but i see to recall they were in a different nissan (maybe a maxima or bluebird or soemthing? or a light truck?) before being dropped into US spec S13's?
i've heard they're pretty tough and respond well to boost, assume aftermarket in the US is huge.

AFAIK they are a badly designed engine, sr20 is far superior.

yeah i just had an idea of bringing one over and putting a ka24det or just a de into a track car, but only if they're decent engines.

and for the mitsubishi eclipses, define "shit" hsdance.gif

They are actually a decent motor, but you generally wouldn't bother building one up.

Locally we got the ka24e in U13 bluebirds in fwd format. We did also get the ka24de in navara's in RWD configuration.

What car are you building?

S14 + 2JZGTE = epic amounts of win.

And understeer oopsie.gif .

Just stick with the SR20. Cheap, light, lots of aftermarket support.

Why bother being different....like everyone else, especially with a KA24 mamoru.gif ? dunno.gif

not a bad engine (they work well for their market), there's a few companies over there dishing out 400hp crate engine packages for their market

eclipses can't be imported at all, unless you wanted one for a race car, people in the US would trade up an eclipse for an evo in a heartbeat over there to be completely honest lol

2JZ's aren't THAT much heavier than the SR, and it can be mounted right up against the firewall for better weight distribution. Only thing that sucks is fitting a decent external gate, last one we did it had to be mounted waaaaaaaaaaaaay low.

the reason behind the whole eclipse thing is that the awd tt version are light for the power the produce so they dont meet the australia guidelines.

My old mechanic had one dishing out almost 270FWKW's IIRC and had it running 150fwkw's for almost 3 years when he boosted it as a stock motor in his AUDM U13 Bluebird.

However, because you can get a hold of an SR powered Silvia it's not worth the trouble of sourcing the KA24DE and swapping it in.

Ken from Accurate Suspension was building one for his 1600, not sure what happened to it but if anyone knows him and his car he must of had good reasons for doing it.

KA24DE is actually a pretty good bit of gear. In many ways, they are a better design than the SR20. They have a proper cam-on-bucket valve train (no dodgy rockers like an SR20), bigger main bearings / crank journals than an SR20, bigger valves / bigger ports than an SR20. There are plenty of aftermarket performance parts available for them from the US, where KA24DE's have put out some very big power numbers.

As mentioned above, in Australia they were available in U13 bluebirds (in FWD form) and in some Navara's (in RWD form). The motor in the TRX pintara's was the KA24E (a single cam, 12 valve version - it was a 4 cylinder with 3 valves per cylinder). KA24DE is twin cam, 24 valve.

They are an evolution from the L-series motors (L16, L18, L20B, etc) that have successfully powered many different Datsun / Nissans for many years - its actually possible to retrofit the 12 valve heads to a Datsun L20B bottom end with a little bit of work (also possible to fit the twin cam head, although there's a bit more work there).

One reason they are often replaced with SR20's in the US version of the S13 is because the KA24 was never released in turbo format (and because everyone automatically thinks SR20's are better becasue that's what came in Jap-spec S13's, etc rolleyes.gif ).

If you want to be different, there are plenty of worse motors to pick (although there are probably better ones as well). Won't be as cheap as an SR20 though by the time you buy aftermarket stuff to turbo it, get an ecu to run the turbo'd motor, etc
