Vr had the buick and vs had the ecotech. Different bolt patterns and shift program. You can get gearboxes cheap as now, seen them getting round for undeer $300.

Is there a particular reason you can't get the box from the same model commy? Like you already have one lying round? Agreed they shouldn't be too expensive.

The VR ones are rarer as they have a lovely habit of spitting out the front seal and the shift pattern also causes premature wear on the bands etc

You may already have seen the labels on the trans bellhousing, if you are looking for another trans & unsure as to which trans may fit PM me with the label number details and I can tell you if it is suitable for your VS.

Sorry we tend to get a bit carried away with the tech talk, but none of us asked the question why do you "wanna change the gearbox in your car" ? What's it doing wrong?

He's got a point, half of 4l60e problems can usually be fixed with fresh oil/filter and a solenoid or two.

Firstly check the fluid level, needs to be done after a drive, on flat ground in park, engine running. It could just be low. If you have an Automatic Transmission Specialist nearby I suggest you ask them to take a drive in it and check it out, as Mongrel said most problems are simple. It could be an electronic control problem so don't let your local mechanic "give it a service and see how it goes" that can be a bit like replacing the air in a tyre with a puncture if you get what I mean. This really is a specialist job.

have checked the fluid hundreds of times, topped it up! etc
so its not a case of low oil!

It will be one of the two shift solenoids probably solenoid B by the sound of it, very simple fix, ~$25 part.
I usually replace both at the same time considering the price.

4L60E loves burning out 3-4 clutch pack. We do a mod to them at work to stop the front pump seal from geting spat out, just need to punch a small lip infront of the seal, stops them spining around too. We also drill the pump out.
