Greetings all!

I'm just wondering how expensive and hard is it to get a car both fixed and back on the roads if the chassis has been damaged?

The reason for me quesiton is because I found a Damaged VRX Magna that has front end damage that if the engine & chassis isn't damaged then I could probably fix for about 2.5-3k.... ($200 for light, $250 for bonnet, $240 for both guards, $100 for bumber, $200 for vrx front end kit, $100 for grille, $1000 for respray, $500 airbags and then rego)

Here are some pics of the front end:

Engine is fine though.

But Airbags have deployed:

The description mentions "light" structural damage - does that mean the chassis has been hit? Here's the description of the car:

Description: 08/02, Mitsubishi, Magna, TJ MY02 VR-X, Sedan
Odometer: Odometer Not Visible
Log Books:No
Colour: Red
Transmission: 5 Spd Sports Automatic
Engine: 3.5 ltr Multi-Point Injection Petrol - Unleaded ULP
Registration:No Registration
No. of Doors:4

Damage Details
Airbags Deployed, Front - Heavy Panel & Light Structural Damage

What do we think? The value of this car in good condition would be about 8-9k - how do we think it wold cost to repair it? More than 3k even if I search around alot and use 2nd hand parts?

Thanks for your time!

I'd say it's safe to assume the front reo bar is fucked. The gap between the front doors and the fenders doesn't look good at all either. And you're missing a lot of stuff that you'd need to repair.
- The radiator and condenser will need to be replaced.
- Headers will probably be damaged.
- Engine mounts are probably torn.
- I'm sure there's some engineering costs involved in getting it cleared from the repairable writeoff registry since it's chassis damage, the airbags need replacing and it's not registered.
- The castor looks rooted. And judging by the fact that the fenders aren't too bent and there's that massive gap at the front doors, then the chassis is probably a lot more damaged than you think it is.

Would be cheaper and more reliable to just find another Magna IMO

I will guarantee you right now that the chassis is bent, to fold a guard in like that takes a lot more than 'light' damage.

Door isn't sitting right. You'd have to replace the whole dash, and instrument cluster, steering wheel too. I wouldn't even bother. Would cost alot more then 3k to fix it all up.

i doubt the chassis is that bent is there any chance you could get photos with the front bar removed will be easy to tell
and guards are only light sheet metal doesnt take much to bend them and there only bent coz they where hit up high and the doors where opened into it
it looks like the damage is pretty high so dont think there would be much damage to the chassis and i doubt the headers are damaged the radiator would have crumbled before it damaged the headers
i dont see why the instrument cluster would have to be replaced? its not damaged
engine mounts wont be damaged

The radiator is fucked. You can see it in the picture. The top hose is smushed into the engine cover. Which will probably also mean that it's pushed into the headers.

Needs more pics.

i know the radiator and hose is fucked still does not mean the headers are damaged the radiator will crumble before it can damage the headers and the radiator is not crumbled

Just be aware that in auction speak, 'light structural damage' usually translates to 'borderline stat write off'.

When repairing a vehicle with such significant damage, you will almost always go over budget as there will always be parts that will need to be fixed/replaced that you hadn't even considered initially. The other issue you will come up against is that you will bidding primarily against wreckers/dismantlers who will see the car as being worth the sum of it's parts, rather than the car as a whole. Often with rare(ish) vehicles, bidding will reach ridiculous amounts and make buying the vehicle to repair uneconomical.

In the end, if you do decide to risk it, you will still wind up with a car worth perhaps 25% less than a comparable car that has never been written off.

Of course it's your call, but there are way too many variables in my mind to make it a worthwhile proposition, even if it did sell for peanuts (which i suspect it won't).

hey mate
these cars dont have a chassis, so they told me when i had i bit of a prang in mine, they have a sub frame which makes it very expensive to straighten out, the other guys here are on the money hey, you will find alot more than you initially expect that needs replacing, & its not really worth all the trouble. deffers just look for one already on the road hey, they are a really underated car, & wont let you down get a manual if you can to =),
