Howdy folks. Just got a question bout upgrading the good old Ej20 Boxer.

Engine is soon to cop a hi flowed sti turbo, EMS and a new cooler (already has exhaust and bleedvalve). Is there actually a considerable difference between an aftermarket top mount intercooler with a spray system and a fmic?

I know that the hot air gets drawn back in after a stand still etc, but for some reason i have noticed that cars with the IHI VF22 turbo, EMS, Exhaust and top mount have a lower ET then ones with a FMIC. Is there much difference in weight? Am i just crazy? laugh.gif Bare in mind tho that after these mods are performed the engine will probably not be modified further. Which cooler is better for this application?

Thanks fellas.

compare the differences between the distance the air has to travel from the turbo to the manifold and there is your answer.

Well I can tell you exact number

You see the difference between a Top mount with water spray and a front mount has nothing to do with the weight of the car.

The a FMIC you will get more power and also more lag thatn if you had a Top Mount with water spray. I have seen a few cars with top mounts and water spray systems and the go really well.

These will be the differences. In summer the FMIC will be a lot more effective than the top mount. If you are looking for more power then the FMIC is the way to go.

The reason why you see Top mount rexs running better times is because the boost comes on alot quicker. Also you will have a lot more fun out on the road.

Hope this answer you question

Now this might be a silly question, but is it posible to have both? Like switch them over for whatever you want at the particular time?

That would be an overly expensive excercise, and I'd doubt you'd actually want to go to the effort for both tongue.gif .. like "oh I'm going to go to the drags today, *pop the bonnet* .. just pull off all these pipes, plug in all these, join this up, now the FMIC is under way" .. let's drag! laugh.gif

expensive and pointless... unless you've got some sort of self tuneable ecu it would be next to impossible smile.gif

the amount of air flow through a front mount is a lot greater then that of the top mount.. hence why most fmic's add a fair bit of power even without a tune...

Thanks for the advice fellas, muchly appreciated. ATM thinkin the top mount to get the quick et's, also a bit more sleeperish then havin a fmic hangin out the front bar (dont get me wrong that looks mad).

get a stealth black one like the APS version.. my mate has one on his WRX and u can barely see it.... only up close you realise it's not the radiator smile.gif

Are pod filters illegal in Queensland? Or is it just NSW? Do they require their own air box? Thinkin of ditching the stock airbox and adding a K&N - positioning it right under the vent (pretty much where the stock one is). The piping from the turbo to the box is pretty much at a 90 degree bend.
