Hey people, just wondering if anyone out there knows what a good price for a bonnet is, both carbon fibre and fibre glass with vent in etc.
And where I can get them sydey or wollongong.

Plus whats rules as far as NSW is concerned cause I am going to change my rego to NSW around X-mas from QLD. Are they illegal? will I need to put my standard bonnet on for the blue slip? or should I just buy a big fibre glass vent for standard bonnet and paint it black?

I don't know what to do? It's all for show, but is a street driven car.

P.S. the car is a Nissan 180sx.

Cheers biggrin.gif

The only reason carbon fibre bonnets are illegal is that they don't have ADR compliance.

This just goes to show how silly the laws are, this includes both N.S.W. and Q.L.D. In Q.L.D. you can have carbon fibre bodykits and even your bootlid, but because carbon fibre bonnets have never been tested in Australia for ADR compliance you can't have them. All it's waiting for is a company to test one and obtain ADR compliance and they will be fine. There is some big myth out there carbon fibre is dangerous because it shatters or similar. It's well proven that it's far safer to have than a normal metal bonnet.

N.S.W. is really no different on the legislation so unless you can get the supplier of the carbon fibre to obtain ADR compliance then it will be illegal.

Yep they are illegal in QLD.

but you CAN make them legal..............you just have to crash your car three times with that bonnet on there, and record the results........

*deadly serious*

it is because they *shatter* if in an accident, where a stock bonnet will crumple. im unsure of the NSW rules, i know a mate who had one engineered on his S15, and had no troubles with it.

Yep it still as the picture shows.

Thanx all for advice, Think I will look at moulding a fibreglass vent into the metal one and paint it black. biggrin.gif

do u want it to look like carbon fibre? cause if ur gonna paint it id say go carbon fibre. if ur looking at weight. my project car is gonna have carbon bonnet, side guards and boot lid, but painted. A nice whole 2 layers lol, should remove some weight from the old car with its aluminimum body angry.gif

There is also carbon look adhesives (done professionally) if it is simply for looks.

Perhaps cut (legal) areas of your bonnet out and have the carbon effect put onto it.

Isn't it illegal coz if u hit a pedestrian CF bonnets will shatter/splinter into small pieces and can cause serious injury to the pedestrian while the normal bonnets crumple during impact

pfffffff. Just contact an engineer and if he says that he will pass it, go for the carbon.

I had a carbon bonnet on my S15 and the engineer passed it no problems. He said that as it was not a structural part of the car it didnt need to be crash tested. He just listed it on my certificate and all was good.

That bullshit that cops say about it needs to be crash tested is true IF ITS NOT ENGINEER CERTIFIED. Because it wasnt on the standard car it doesnt meet ADRs. But then neither does any mod really.

oh by the way you can get carbon bonnets from $1000 right up to $3000 is the most expensive ive seen. The cheaper ones have a carbon top and the bottom section under the bonnet is fibreglass. When I installed my carbon bonnet it was no joke around a third of the weight of the stock metal one.

As for fibreglass, they are still around the $900 - $1000 mark with the added cost of having it prepped and painted. This can add a stack more to the overall price depending on how smooth the fibreglass is etc. The carbon ones are obviously finished when you buy them. Just bolt it on. Be careful with carbon though. Mine had a clear gel coating over it which gives it the smooth gloss appearance. Some of the cheaper ones are raw and look crap. You can polish the coated ones like normal paint whereas the raw ones Im not too sure on how you keep them clean as they have a rough surface.

I got mine from Unique Autosports in Castle Hill. www.nismo.com.au
