Ok my question is what sort of power can you get out of a 308 and what is the cost to make them go well. i picked up a reco'd 308 and 4 speed and i thought i might drop it in my 280zx. a light car with a v8 it should go well. but what sort of power do they make.

--------------------
There aint nothing like shoehorning a V8 into a zed.

First (wheel spin), second (wheel spin), third (wheel spin), fourth, valve bounce, 150kmh WTF. bloody gear ratios.

Depends, how much money you got? I have seen 830RWHP from a small block chev, but it did cost him $200 in avgas to get down the coast, then another $200 to get back. But a 308 in a 280z? Come on thats just wrong.

Well i must admit its something different, a v8tt Z would be pretty trippy, but moeny is a big factor then. I am not full sure prices and hp, but if your on the south side of brissy i reckomend JH&H for engine work and conversion, they know what there talking about and can set u up with just about what eva u want.

But i would think 5k should get u 400hp, but dont quote me on that.

wot is it a red blue or black motor? yea stocko they hav like 130kw fuk all really but dont cost 2 much 2 get goin hard, wot i suggest is stroke it, big cam, sum good alloy heads prob, big exhaust and c how u go from there, thats a 1 of a kind 280sx hehe good work champ!

I agree, 308 into a datsun like that would rock (even though its still a datsun). You'll get maximum respect on the street with one.

Just immagine rocking up to harrys biggrin.gif

thanks for the support i didnt know how people would react to it. ive got the v8 its excellent condition it has just been reconditioned a few months ago. ive got a huge cam for it extractors and a holley which is somewhere around 800cfm ill put it in then i can sell my commodore then ill have around $6000 to spend on the car. but i do have a worry about the chasis standard the 280 will handle it but ive heard over 300 horsepower it can twist the chasis so ill have to strengthen it.

Thanks for help. Imagine the sound of a datto with a 3 inch twin system and a 308 with a huge cam.

I cant wait to c u out on the road. Chassi twist depends on engine out put hp and torque so ull have to do more resarch on that.

And i certainly hope your going to get more than 300hp out of it cus will b a surpise to most ppl, until they figure what u done. Would be a sleeper if u could keep it quite.

Quiet oops maybe the 3 inch twin system would not be a good idea. but the more i think about this project the more i like it it would probably take around 6 months to do it though, so im stuck driving the commodore. my dad has got right into this and has tracked down a supercharger and a nitrous system although i dont want to kill myself thats just bloody dangerous.

3inch system would b perfect mate smile.gif i dunno about a 800 holley on a mostly stock 308 tho :S , u got a gearbox 2?

Prepare to kiss ur weight distribution goodbye.... will make the Z very front heavy

Props on the idea tho

hehe yea 800cfm is uh a little excessive, unless u are infact gonna supercharge it, but if ur dads sourcing some sort of roots style blower that sits out of the bonnet, then expect the pigs to be all over u like a dog on heat.

personally havent seen that all that much power from a streetable NA 308 before.. i dunno 300-400hp? , is there a vortec style blower u can put on a carbed v8 to get some real power from it?

ok i got a 650 holley for the time being i put the 800 on a friends and it didnt run that well a little overkill. i thought about the extra weight in the front and the v8 is a fair bit shorter than the inline 6 so i can sit it right back in the engine bay. and i do plan to supercharge it so ill keep the 800 holley. i got a cam from someone made by crane cams and from the documents with it its the biggest street/strip cam they make so maybe thats an overkill but i got it cheaply. i can wait to get it on the road.

this is what i heard from a mate at work and he told me he has read it somewhere but he doesnt know if its true or not. apparently it costs 30,000 dollars to get a N/A v8 (not sure if that means a 308 or what) to do 10second quarters!!! FUNGULY THAT

Nah ive got a mate with a valiant that does 10's and he spent $15,000 on it but thats doing the work himself so it could be that high if you had to pay someone to do it.

$10 000 to get a VK V8 commo running 10s. Or there abouts. But thats not your car. Super V8 in a little Z is quick, there are some vids of one on 3rotor.com, it beats or holds an R1 moto.

Bunch of homos.

Take a red 308.

Put VN heads on it.

Put VN cams in it.

Put a Harrop manifold on it.

Put a 750cfm holley double pumper on it.

Voila, you are now running high 12's in a kingswood so lets say low 12's for a lighter Z. Total cost including engine from wreckers, maybe $3,000.

Add another 2k for shift kit and hi stalled auto and there you go an engine that does 12's for 5k.

Mind you, fitting it to the Z could be a real hassle in terms of engineers certificate and mod plates etc. Not to mention the actual fitting in the first place.

Ok firstly there is heaps of room in the zed to fit the v8 there is more room in that than there is in my commodore. I would have little trouble with the engineering side of things because my dad is a transport inspector and qualified to do the modifications. its just about the gearbox i know alot of people use autos for v8 but i have to have a manual thats all i want, at the moment it has a 4 speed manual with the v8 although i have never heard of anyone using these, should i go to a supra 5 speed or is the 4 speed ok.

cams116
Post #18

4 speed, think about it, you know you want a supra 6 speed biggrin.gif But failing that, go for the supra 5speed, they are in my oppinion a better box.

keep the four speed until it breaks (if it breaks)

then look at putting a stronger box in it

thanks, yeah i think ill just use it until it blows up the same with the diff although i have heard that those diffs are very strong.

Nope, "fast 253" is an oxymoron.

Put it in the bin, they are bloody useless.

I've seen a quote that sums it all up:

"Ahh 253's... The power of a 6 with the economy of an 8"

Ignore him atm, go see JHH http://www.workin4u.com.au/jhh/ see what they have to say for themselfs. He was talking to me about them the other day, and he reckoned for the same money he could get them about on par with a 308. No harm in asking at least.
