I Need A Mechanics Opinion - Commodore problem

Hi guys,

I just want to get a mechanics/mechanical minded persons opinion before i take her in to get it diagnosed.

Its a 94 Auto VR Commodore.

It has a rattle/knocking sound somewhere under the bonnet, i can't pinpoint it, however this sound only occurs in neutral & park and when revved.

It idles fine, and when in drive and other gears theres no sign of the noise.

I did notice when revved in gear, the motor moves quite abit, i'm not sure if this is how their designed or not???

It also has a pressure control solenoid current error, the the car shifts from park to 1st quite harshly. It also has a shift kit though.

Any ideas? do you think its internal even though its only happening in neutral/park??

#EDIT# Forgot to mention, i removed the belt for a couple of seconds, and it still made this noise, so i believe i've ruled out pully's.

my mate had the same sort of noise and he ended up putting a rod throug his block

Engine mount has sagged, common as all heel on the V6 commodores. The sump hits the cross member and causes the vibration. In gear, the torque of the motor 'flexes' the engine up and lifts it off the mount.

Yep. Done 100's of em on vr's and VS

Also if you go to get em repaired and then say they had to remove the cross member tell em bullshit.
You can remove the engine mounts (both) at the same time. Yes it may be abit tricky but its saves at least and hour or more

Also, dropping the cross member means your supposed to fit new cross member bolts as they are tension to yield(TTY) which means they are one use only wink.gif

also check harmonic balancer.i just replaced 2 engines in my vr and turned out that it was the balancer as i was using the same one each time

thats not an engine mount noise, ive seen and heard them when half the sump has worn through on the cross member and they dont make a consant cylic noise like that, they just vibrate like shit through the car!

sounds like a bottem end problem or balance shaft, under load its obviously going to put more pressure on everything thus quieting the noise down..

feel free to check your mounts (look how far the rod through the mount is from the crossmember and if the sump is touching the xmember) im telling you that is not eng mount noise..

Hi i work for hobby and i made car turbo software and hardware in Greece . your problem is a rod metal .if you worked the car for a long time you need a crankshaft work,mayby need 0.2 metals.Possible error you oil pump or bad oil did not oiled the crank so it worked without oil,(metal on metal) problem.If you contin running the car if your compression is high you will probably damage your head with the movement of pistons and cylinder problem .i would probably change also the crankshaft metals and the washers

dont forget the gearbox mount as well, these are common to crap out also

Thanks for all the responses, i went out an bought one of those stethoscopes and i think its internal unfortunately.

I can hear it at the top of the engine, aswell as through the sump, probably though the sump more.

again thanks for everyones thoughts, off to find a new motor i suppose!
