Under the hood and vehicle The maintenance items listed here should be checked periodically e.g. each time you check the engine oil or refuel. Windshield washer fluid*: Check that there is adequate fluid in the tank. Engine oil level*: Check the level after parking the vehicle on a level spot and turning off the engine. (Be sure to wait a few minutes to allow the oil to drain back into the sump.) Brake and clutch fluid levels*: Make sure that the brake and clutch fluid level is between the MAX and MIN lines on the reservoir. Power steering fluid level* and lines: Check the level when the fluid is cold and the engine is turned off. Check the lines for proper attachment, leaks, cracks, etc.

Automatic transmission fluid level*:

Check the level after putting the selector lever in P (Park) with the engine idling. Engine coolant level*: Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. Radiator and hoses: Check the front of the radiator and clean off any dirt, insects, leaves, etc., that may have accumulated. Make sure the hoses have no cracks, deformation, rot or loose connections. Engine drive belts*: Make sure that no belt is frayed, worn, cracked or oily. Battery*: Check the fluid level in each cell. It should be between the MAX and MIN lines. Vehicles operated in high temperatures or under severe conditions require frequent checks of the battery fluid level. Exhaust system: Make sure there are no loose supports, cracks or holes. If the sound of the exhaust seems unusual or there is a smell of exhaust fumes, immediately locate the trouble and correct it.

Z 01.9.21/R50-D/V5 X

See “Precautions when starting and driving” in the “5. Starting and driving” section for exhaust gas (carbon monoxide). Underbody: The underbody is frequently exposed to corro- sive substances such as those used on icy roads or to control dust. It is very important to remove these substances, otherwise rust will lines and form on the floor pan, frame, fuel around the exhaust system. At the end of winter, the underbody should be thoroughly flushed with plain water, being careful to clean those areas where mud and dirt may accumu- late. For additional information, see “Cleaning exterior” in the “7. Appearance and care” sec- tion. Fluid leaks: Check under the vehicle for fuel, oil, water or other fluid leaks after the vehicle has been parked for a while. Water dripping from the air conditioner after use is normal. If you should notice any leaks or if gasoline fumes are evident, check for the cause and have it cor- rected immediately.

MAINTENANCE PRECAUTIONS

When performing any inspection or mainte- nance work on your vehicle, always take care to prevent serious accidental injury to yourself or damage to the vehicle. The following are general precautions which should be closely observed.

WARNING

I Park the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake securely and block the wheels to prevent the ve- hicle from moving. For a manual transmission, move the shift lever to Neutral. For an automatic transmis- sion, move the selector lever to the P (Park) position.

I Be sure the ignition key is in the OFF or LOCK position when performing any replacement or repair.

I If you must work with the engine running, keep your hands, clothing, hair and tools away from moving fans belts and any other moving parts.

I It is advisable to secure or remove any loose clothing and any jewelry,

such as rings, watches, etc. before working on your vehicle.

I Always wear eye protection when-

ever you work on your vehicle.

I If you must run the engine in an enclosed space such as a garage, be sure there is proper ventilation for exhaust gases to escape.

I Never get under the vehicle while it is supported only by a jack. If it is nec- essary to work under the vehicle, support it with safety stands.

I Keep smoking materials, flame and

sparks away from fuel and battery.

I Your vehicle is equipped with an au- tomatic engine cooling fan. It may come on at any time without warning, even if the ignition key is in the OFF position and the engine is not run- ning. To avoid injury, always discon- nect the negative battery cable before working near the fan.

I Keep the battery surface clean and dry. Any corrosion should be washed off with a solution of baking soda and water.

I Make certain the terminal connections are

clean and securely tightened.

I If the vehicle is not to be used for 30 days or longer, disconnect the (—) negative battery terminal cable to prevent discharge.

WARNING

I Do not expose the battery to flames or electrical sparks. Hydrogen gas generated by battery action is explo- sive. Do not allow battery fluid to contact your skin, eyes, fabrics, or painted surfaces. After touching a battery or battery cap, do not touch or rub your eyes. Thoroughly wash your hands. If the acid contacts your eyes, skin or clothing, immediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

If you have a flat tire, see “Flat tire” in the “6. In case of emergency” section. TIRE PRESSURE Maximum inflation pressure Do not exceed the maximum inflation pres- sures shown on the side wall of the tire. Tire inflation pressure Check the tire pressure (including spare) at least once a month and always prior to long distance trip. Incorrect tire pressure may ad- versely affect tire life and vehicle handling. Tire pressure should be checked when tires are

COLD. Tires are considered COLD after the vehicle has been parked for three or more hours, or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) at moderate speeds. COLD tire pressures are shown on the tire placard affixed to the inside of the glove box lid.

WARNING

I Improperly inflated tires can fail sud-

denly and cause an accident.

I The vehicle capacity weight is indi- cated on the tire placard. Do not load your vehicle beyond this capacity. Overloading your vehicle may result in reduced tire life, unsafe operating conditions due to premature tire fail- ure, or unfavorable handling charac- teristics and could also lead to a serious accident. Loading beyond the specified capacity may also result in failure of other vehicle components. I Before taking a long trip, or whenever you have loaded your vehicle heavily, use a tire pressure gauge to ensure that the tire pressure is at the speci- fied level.

I Do not drive your vehicle over 85
MPH (140 km/h) unless it is equipped with high speed capability tires. Driv- ing faster than 85 MPH (140 km/h) may result in tire failure, loss of con- trol and possible injury.

I For additional information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Informa- tion Booklet (US) or “Tire Safety In- formation” in the Warranty Informa- tion booklet (Canada).

TYPES OF TIRES

CAUTION

I When changing or replacing tires, be sure all four tires are of the same type (i.e., summer, all season or snow) and construction. Your NISSAN dealer may be able to help you with informa- tion about tire type, size, speed rating and availability. Replacement tires may have a lower speed rating than

the factory equipped tires, and may not match the potential maximum ve- hicle speed. Never exceed the maxi- mum speed rating of the tire.

I For additional information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Informa- tion Booklet (US) or “Tire Safety In- formation” in the Warranty Informa- tion booklet (Canada).

All season tires NISSAN specifies all season tires on some models to provide good performance for use all year around, including snowy and icy road conditions. All season tires are identified by ALL SEASON and/or M&S on the tire sidewall. Snow tires have better snow traction than all season tires and may be more appropriate in some areas. Summer tires NISSAN specifies summer tires on some mod- els to provide superior performance on dry roads. Summer tire performance in snow and ice will be substantially reduced. Summer tires

Do not drive with tire chains on paved roads which are clear of snow. Driving with chains in such conditions can cause damage to the various mechanisms of the vehicle due to some overstress. When driving on clear paved roads, be sure to change to 2WD.

do not have the tire traction rating M&S on the tire sidewall.

If you operate your vehicle in snowy or icy conditions, NISSAN recommends the use of SNOW or ALL SEASON tires on all four wheels. Snow tires If snow tires are needed, it is necessary to select tires equivalent in size and load rating to the original equipment tires. If you do not, it can adversely affect the safety and handling of your vehicle. Generally, snow tires will have lower speed ratings than factory equipped tires and may not match the potential maximum vehicle speed. Never exceed the maximum speed rating of the tire. If you install snow tires on four wheel drive models, they must also be the same size, brand, construction and tread pattern on all four wheels. If you operate your vehicle in snowy or icy conditions, NISSAN recommends the use of SNOW or ALL SEASON tire on all four wheels. For additional traction on icy roads, studded tires may be used. However, some provinces and states prohibit their use. Check local, state 8-36 Maintenance and do-it-yourself

and provincial laws before installing studded tires. Skid and traction capabilities of studded snow tires, on wet or dry surfaces, may be poorer than that of non-studded snow tires. TIRE CHAINS Use of tire chains is prohibited according to location. Check the local laws before installing tire chains. When installing tire chains, make sure they are of proper size for the tires on your vehicle and are installed according to the chain manufacturer’s suggestions. Use only SAE class S chains. Other types may dam- age your vehicle. Use chain tensioners when recommended by the tire chain manufacturer to ensure a tight fit. Loose end links of the tire chain must be secured or removed to prevent the possibility of whipping action damage to the fenders or underbody. If possible, avoid fully loading your vehicle when using tire chains. In addition, drive at a reduced speed. Otherwise, your vehicle may be damaged and/or vehicle handling and performance may be adversely affected. Never install tire chains on TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tires. Do not use tire chains on dry roads. Tire chains must be installed only on the rear wheels and not on the front wheels.

Z 01.9.21/R50-D/V5 X

WARNING

I After rotating the tires, adjust the tire

pressure.

I Retighten the wheel nuts after the vehicle has been driven for 600 miles (1,000 km) (also in cases of a flat tire, etc.).

I Do not include small size spare tire in

the tire rotation.

I For additional information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Informa- tion Booklet (US) or “Tire Safety In- formation” in the Warranty Informa- tion booklet (Canada).

SDI0724

CHANGING WHEELS AND TIRES Tire rotation NISSAN recommends that tires be rotated every 7,500 miles (12,000 km). However, the timing for tire rotation may vary according to your driving habits and road surface condi- tions. See “Flat tire” in the “6. In case of emergency” section for tire replacing procedures.

Tire wear and damage

WARNING

I Tires should be periodically in- spected for wear, cracking, bulging or objects caught in the tread. If exces- sive wear, cracks, bulging or deep cuts are found, the tire should be replaced.

I The original tires have a built-in tread wear indicator. When the wear indica-

tire,

I For additional information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Informa- tion Booklet (US) or “Tire Safety In- formation” in the Warranty Informa- tion booklet (Canada).

Replacing wheels and tires When replacing a tire, use the same size, speed rating and load carrying capacity as originally equipped. See “Specifications” in the “9. Technical and consumer information” sec- tion for tires and wheels.

8-38 Maintenance and do-it-yourself

I The use of tires other than those recommended or the mixed use of tires of different brands, construction (bias, bias-belted or radial), or tread patterns can adversely affect the ride, braking, handling, ground clearance, body-to-tire clearance, tire chain clearance, speedometer calibration, headlight aim and bumper height. Some of these effects may lead to accidents and could result in serious personal injury.

I If the wheels are changed for any reason, always replace with wheels which have the same offset dimen- sion. Wheels of a different offset could cause early tire wear, possibly degraded vehicle handling character- istics and/or interference with the brake discs. Such interference can lead to decreased braking efficiency and/or early brake pad wear.

I Do not install a deformed wheel or

tire even if it has been repaired. Such wheels or tires could have structural damage and could fail without warn- ing.

I The use of retread tire is not rec-

ommended.

I For additional information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Informa- tion Booklet (US) or “Tire Safety In- formation” in the Warranty Informa- tion booklet (Canada).

Four wheel drive models

CAUTION

Always use tires of the same size, brand, construction (bias, bias-belted or ra- dial), and tread pattern on all four wheels. Failure to do so may result in a circumference difference between tires on the front and rear axles which will cause excessive tire wear and may dam-

Z 01.9.21/R50-D/V5 X

age the transmission, transfer case and differential gears.

If excessive tire wear is found, it is recom- mended that all four tires be replaced with tires of the same size, brand, construction and tread pattern. The tire pressure and wheel alignment should also be checked and cor- rected as necessary. Contact your NISSAN dealer. Wheel balance Unbalanced wheels may affect vehicle han- dling and tire life. Even with regular use, wheels can get out of balance. Therefore, they should be balanced as required. Wheel balance service should be performed with the wheels off the vehicle. Spin balancing the rear wheels on the vehicle could lead to transmission damage. I For additional

information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Information Booklet (US) or “Tire Safety Information” in the Warranty Information booklet (Canada).

Care of wheels I Wash the wheels when washing the vehicle

to maintain their appearance.

I Clean the inner side of the wheels when the wheel is changed or the underside of the vehicle is washed.

I Do not use abrasive cleaners when wash-

ing the wheels.

I Inspect wheel rims regularly for dents or corrosion. This may cause loss of pressure or damage the tire bead.

I NISSAN recommends that the road wheels be waxed to protect against road salt in areas where it is used during winter.

TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire (if so equipped) U.S. only. Canadian vehicles are equipped with a full size spare tire. Observe the following precautions if the TEM- PORARY USE ONLY spare tire must be used, otherwise your vehicle could be damaged or involved in an accident.

WARNING

I The TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire should be used only for emer-

gency. It should be replaced by the standard tire at the first opportunity. I Drive carefully while the TEMPO- RARY USE ONLY spare tire is in- stalled.

Avoid sharp turns and abrupt braking while driving.

I Periodically check the TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire inflation pres- sure, and always keep it at 28 psi (190
kPa, 1.9 bar).

I Always keep the pressure of the full size spare tire (if so equipped) at the recommended pressure for standard tires, as indicated on the tire placard. For tire placard location, see “Tire placard” in the “9. Technical and con- sumer information” section.

I Do not drive your vehicle at speeds

faster than 50 MPH (80 km/h).

I When driving on roads covered with snow or ice, the small size spare tire should be used on the rear wheel and

the original tire used on the front wheels (drive wheels). Use tire chains only on the front two original tires.

I Tire tread of the TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire will wear at a faster rate than the original tire. Replace the TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire as soon as the tread wear indicators appear.

I Do not use the TEMPORARY USE

ONLY spare tire on other vehicles.

I Do not use more than one TEMPO- RARY USE ONLY spare tire at the same time.

I Do not tow a trailer while the TEMPO- RARY USE ONLY spare tire is in- stalled.

CAUTION

I Do not use tire chains on a TEMPO- RARY USE ONLY spare tire. Tire chains will not fit properly on the

8-40 Maintenance and do-it-yourself

TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire and may cause damage to the ve- hicle.

I Because the TEMPORARY USE ONLY spare tire is smaller than the original tire, ground clearance is reduced. To avoid damage to the vehicle do not drive over obstacles. Also do not drive the vehicle through an auto- matic car wash since it may get caught.

FUEL RECOMMENDATION VG33E engine: Your vehicle is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 91). VQ35DE engine: Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 96). If unleaded premium gasoline is not avail- able, unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Research octane number 91) can be used. However, for maximum vehicle perfor- mance, the use of unleaded premium gaso- line is recommended.

CAUTION

Using a fuel other than that specified could adversely affect the emission con- trol devices and systems, and could also affect the warranty coverage.

9-4 Technical and consumer information

Under no circumstances should a leaded gasoline be used since this will damage the three way catalyst.

Reformulated gasoline Some fuel suppliers are now producing refor- mulated gasolines. These gasolines are spe- cially designed to reduce vehicle emissions. NISSAN supports efforts towards cleaner air and suggest that you use reformulated gaso- line when available. Gasoline containing oxygenates Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing oxygenates such as ethanol, MTBE and methanol with or without advertising their pres- ence. Nissan does not recommend the use of fuels of which the oxygenate content and the fuel compatibility for your Nissan cannot be readily determined. If you use oxygenate-blend gasoline, please take the following precautions as the usage of such fuels may cause vehicle performance problems and/or fuel system damage. I The fuel should be unleaded and have an octane rating no lower than that rec- ommended for unleaded gasoline.

I If an oxygenate-blend, excepting a methanol blend, is used, it should con- tain no more than 10% oxygenate. (MTBE may, however, be added up to 15%.)

I If a methanol blend is used, it should contain no more than 5% methanol (me- thyl alcohol, wood alcohol). It should also contain a suitable amount of appro- priate cosolvents and corrosion inhibi- tors. If not properly formulated with ap- propriate cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors, such methanol blends may cause fuel system damage and/or ve- hicle performance problems. At this time, sufficient data is not available to ensure that all methanol blends are suit- able for use in Nissan vehicles.

If any undesirable driveability problems such as engine stalling and hard hot starting are experienced after using oxygenate-blend fu- els, immediately change to a non-oxygenate fuel or a fuel with a low blend of MTBE. Take care not to spill gasoline during refu- eling. Gasoline containing oxygenates can cause paint damage. Aftermarket fuel additives NISSAN does not recommend the use of any

Z 01.9.21/R50-D/V5 X

while holding a steady speed on level roads, have your dealer correct the condi- tion. Failure to correct the condition is misuse of the vehicle, for which NISSAN is not responsible. Incorrect ignition timing will result in knocking, after-run or overheating. This in turn may cause excessive fuel consumption or damage to the engine. If any of the above symptoms are encountered, have your vehicle checked at a NISSAN dealer or other competent service facility. However, now and then you may notice light spark knock for a short time while accelerating or driving up hills. This is no cause for concern, because you get the greatest fuel benefit when there is light spark knock for a short time.

fuel additives (i.e.: fuel injector cleaner, octane booster, intake valve deposit removers, etc.) which are sold commercially. Many of these additives intended for gum, varnish or deposit removal may contain active solvents or similar ingredients that can be harmful to the fuel system and engine. Octane rating tips In most parts of North America, you should use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (VQ35DE engine) or 87 AKI (Anti-knock Index) number (VG33E engine). However, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 85 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number in these high altitude areas [over 4,000 ft (1,219
m)] such as: Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, northeastern Nevada, south- ern Idaho, western South Dakota, western Nebraska, and that part of Texas which is directly south of New Mexico. Using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than stated above can cause persistent, heavy spark knock. (Spark knock is a metallic rapping noise.) If se- vere, this can lead to engine damage. If you detect a persistent heavy spark knock even when using gasoline of the stated octane rating, or if you hear steady spark knock

used in your NISSAN vehicle. These oils must however, meet the API quality and SAE vis- cosity ratings specified for your vehicle. Do not mix mineral based and synthetic type oils in the engine at the same time. Oil additives NISSAN does not recommend the use of oil additives. The use of an oil additive is not necessary when the proper oil type is used and maintenance intervals are followed. Oil which may contain foreign matter or has been previously used should not be used. Oil viscosity The engine oil viscosity or thickness changes with temperature. Because of this, it is impor- tant that the engine oil viscosity be selected based on the temperatures at which the ve- hicle will be operated before the next oil change. The chart recommended SAE viscos- ity number shows the recommended oil vis- cosities for the expected ambient tempera- tures. Choosing an oil viscosity other than that recommended could cause serious engine damage. Selecting the correct oil filter Your new vehicle is equipped with a high- quality genuine Nissan oil filter. When replac-

ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER RECOMMENDATION Selecting the correct oil It is essential to choose the correct quality, and viscosity oil to ensure satisfactory engine life and performance. Nissan recommends the use of a low friction oil (energy conserving oil) in order to improve fuel economy and con- serve energy. Oils which do not have the specified quality label should not be used as they could cause engine damage. Only those engine oils with the American Pe- troleum Institute (API) CERTIFICATION 9-6 Technical and consumer information

If you cannot find engine oil with the API CERTIFICATION MARK, use an API grade SG/SH, Energy Conserving I & II or API grade SJ, Energy Conserving oil. An oil with a single designation SG or SH, or in combination with other categories (for example, SG/CC or SG/CD) may also be used if one with the API CERTIFICATION MARK cannot be found.
