Interior lighting control General notes In order to prevent the vehicle's battery from discharging, the interior lighting functions are automatically deactivated after some time except for when the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock. The brightness of the ambient lighting may be set using the control on the instrument clus- ter (Y page 212).

Interior lighting
When a front door is opened, the front interior lighting comes on. When a rear door is opened, the rear interior lighting comes on. In addition, the courtesy lights come on. i If a door remains open and the ignition key is not in the ignition lock, the interior lighting switches off automatically after approximately 30 minutes.
Manual interior lighting control Front interior lighting ! If the interior lighting has been switched
on manually, it will not be switched off automatically. This can cause the starter battery to dis- charge. Make sure that the interior lighting does not remain switched on too long after the engine has been switched off.

Other bulbs G WARNING Bulbs and lamps can be very hot. You should therefore allow them to cool down before you change them. Otherwise, you could be burned if you touch them. Keep bulbs out of the reach of children. Oth- erwise, they could damage the bulbs, for example, and injure themselves. Never use a bulb which has been dropped. Such a bulb may break or even explode and injure you. Halogen bulbs are pressurised and can explode when you change them, particularly if they are very hot. You should therefore wear eye protection and gloves when you are changing them.
There are bulbs other than the xenon bulbs that you cannot replace. Replace only the bulbs listed (Y page 115). Have the bulbs that you cannot replace yourself changed at a qualified specialist workshop. If you require assistance replacing bulbs, con- sult a qualified specialist workshop. Do not touch the glass tube of new bulbs with your bare hands. Even minor contamination can burn into the glass surface and reduce the service life of the bulbs. Always use a lint- free cloth or only touch the base of the bulb when fitting. Only use bulbs of the correct type. If the new bulb still does not light up, consult a qualified specialist workshop. Bulbs and lamps are an important aspect of vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure that these function correctly at all times. Have the headlamp setting checked regularly.
Courtesy lighting in the front doors The courtesy light is switched on to help you see better when it is dark. X To switch on: activate the interior lighting
automatic control.
X Open the door. X To switch off: close the door.
Replacing bulbs Important safety notes Xenon bulbs G DANGER Xenon bulbs carry a high voltage. You could get an electric shock and be seriously or even fatally injured if you touch the electric con- tacts on xenon bulbs. Therefore, never remove the cover from xenon bulbs. Do not change the xenon bulbs yourself, but have them replaced at a qualified workshop.
If your vehicle is equipped with xenon bulbs, you can recognise this by the following: the cone of light from the xenon bulbs moves from the top to the bottom and back again when you start the engine. For this to be observed, the lights must be switched on before starting the engine. Bulbs and lamps are an important aspect of vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure that these function correctly at all times. Have the headlamp setting checked regularly.
LED lamps You can neither replace xenon bulbs nor LED bulbs. Have LED bulbs changed at a qualified specialist workshop. Bulbs and lamps are an important aspect of vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure that these function correctly at all times. Have the headlamp setting checked regularly.

the wiper blades twice a year, ideally in spring and autumn.
! Do not operate the windscreen wipers
when the windscreen/rear window is dry, as this could damage the wiper blades. Moreover, dust that has collected on the windscreen/rear window can scratch the glass if wiping takes place when the wind- screen/rear window is dry. If it is necessary to operate the windscreen wipers/rear window wiper in dry weather conditions, always use washer fluid.
! If the windscreen wipers leave smears on the windscreen/rear window after the vehi- cle has been washed in an automatic car wash, this may be due to wax or other res- idue. Clean the windscreen/rear window with washer fluid after an automatic car wash.
! Intermittent wiping with rain sensor: due to optical influences and the windscreen becoming dirty in dry weather conditions, the windscreen wipers may be activated inadvertently. This could damage the wind- screen wiper blades or scratch the wind- screen. For this reason, you should always switch off the windscreen wipers in dry weather.

Intermittent wiping is interrupted if you stop and open a front door. This protects people getting into and out of the vehicle from being sprayed with water. In the Ä or Å position, the appropriate wiping frequency is set automatically accord- ing to the intensity of the rain. In the Å position, the rain sensor is more sensitive than in the Ä position, causing the wind- screen wipers to wipe more frequently. i When the windscreen wipers are
switched on and you stop the vehicle, the windscreen wipers wipe more slowly.
Switching the rear window wiper on/ off

Replacing the wiper blades Important safety notes G WARNING The wiper arms could start moving and cause an injury if you leave the windscreen wipers switched on. Remove the key from the ignition lock before replacing the wiper blades.
! To avoid damaging the windscreen wiper blades, make sure that you touch only the wiper arm of the windscreen wiper.
! Never open the bonnet if a windscreen wiper arm has been folded away from the windscreen. Never fold a windscreen wiper arm without a wiper blade back onto the windscreen/ rear window. Hold the windscreen wiper arm firmly when you change the wiper blade. If you release the windscreen wiper arm without a wiper blade and it falls onto the windscreen, the windscreen may be damaged by the force of the impact. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the wiper blades changed at a qualified specialist workshop.

i Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period
during warm weather, e.g. using the con- venience opening feature (Y page 78). This will speed up the cooling process and the desired vehicle interior temperature will be reached more quickly.
i The integrated filter can filter out most
particles of dust and completely filters out pollen. A clogged filter reduces the amount of air supplied to the vehicle interior. For this reason, you should always observe the interval for replacing the filter, which is specified in the Service Booklet. As it depends on environmental conditions, e.g. heavy air pollution, the interval may be shorter than stated in the Service Booklet.

THERMATIC automatic climate control regu- lates the temperature and the humidity in the vehicle interior and filters undesirable sub- stances from the air. THERMATIC automatic climate control is only operational when the engine is running. Opti- mum operation is only achieved if you drive with the side windows and sliding sunroof closed. The climatic comfort deteriorates whilst the sliding sunroof is open. The automatic climate control cannot maintain the set temperature with the sliding sunroof open. You have to adjust the climate control manually. i The residual heat function can only be activated or deactivated with the ignition switched off.

Information about using THERMATIC automatic climate control The following contains notes and recommen- dations on optimum use of THERMATIC auto- matic climate control. RActivate climate control using the à and

the windscreen is clear again.
ROnly use the air-recirculation mode briefly, e.g. if there are unpleasant outside odours or when in a tunnel. Activating/deactivating the cooling with air dehumidification function Points to observe before use G WARNING If the "cooling with air dehumidification" function is deactivated, the air inside the vehicle will not be cooled (during warm weather) or dehumidified. The windows could mist up more quickly. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.
The cooling with air dehumidification function is only available when the engine is running. The air inside the vehicle is cooled and dehumidified according to the temperature selected. Condensation may drip from the underside of the vehicle when cooling mode is active. This is normal and not a sign that there is a malfunction. i The cooling with air dehumidification function uses refrigerant R134a. This refrigerant does
not contain chlorofluorocarbons, and therefore does not damage the ozone layer.

Setting climate control to automatic mode In automatic mode, the set temperature is maintained at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air dis- tribution.
Automatic mode will achieve optimal opera- tion if cooling with air dehumidification is also activated. If desired, cooling with air dehu- midification can be deactivated.

i The rear window heating has a high cur- rent draw. You should therefore switch it off as soon as the window is clear. It only switches itself off automatically after a few minutes.

Problems with the rear window heating If the indicator lamp in the ª rear window heating button flashes, the on-board voltage is too low. The rear window heating has switched off prematurely or cannot be acti- vated. X Switch off any consumers that are not required, e.g. reading lamps or interior lighting. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear window heating is activated again automatically.
Activating/deactivating air-recircula- tion mode G WARNING Only switch over to air-recirculation mode briefly at low outside temperatures. Other- wise, the windows could mist up, thus impair- ing visibility and endangering yourself and others. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident. X Turn the key to position 2(Y page 143) in
the ignition lock.

Auxiliary heating Important safety notes G WARNING Exhaust fumes are produced when the auxili- ary heating is in operation. Inhaling these exhaust fumes can be poisonous. You should therefore switch off the auxiliary heating in confined spaces without an extraction sys- tem, e.g. a garage. G WARNING When operating the auxiliary heating parts of the vehicle can get very hot. Make sure that the exhaust system does not under any cir- cumstances come into contact with easily ignitable material such as dry grass or fuels. The material could otherwise ignite and set
the vehicle alight. Choose your parking spot accordingly. Operating the auxiliary heating is thus pro- hibited at filling stations or when your vehicle is being refuelled. You must therefore switch off the auxiliary heating at filling stations.
! Operating the auxiliary heating/ventila- tion draws on the vehicle battery. After you have heated or ventilated the vehicle a maximum of two times, drive for a longer distance.
i Switch the auxiliary heating on regularly
once a month for approximately ten minutes.
The auxiliary heating heats the air in the vehi- cle interior without using the heat of the run- ning engine. The auxiliary heating is operated directly using the vehicle's fuel. For this rea- son, the tank content must be at least at reserve fuel level to ensure that the auxiliary heating functions. The auxiliary heating/ventilation automati- cally adjusts to changes in temperature and weather conditions. For this reason, the aux- iliary heating could switch from ventilation mode to heating mode or from heating mode to ventilation mode. You cannot use the auxiliary ventilation to cool the vehicle interior to a temperature lower than the outside temperature.
Before switching on X Turn the key to position 2(Y page 143) in
the ignition lock.
X Set the temperature. The auxiliary heating/ventilation can be acti- vated even when climate control is set to manual. Optimum comfort can be attained when the system is set to automatic mode. Set the temperature to 22 †. The auxiliary heating/ventilation can be acti- vated or deactivated using the remote control or the button on the centre console.
