Changing the settings of the locking system You can change the settings of the locking system. This means that only the driver's door and the fuel filler flap are unlocked when the vehicle is unlocked. This is useful if you fre- quently travel on your own. X To change the setting: press and hold down the % and & buttons on the key simultaneously for approximately six seconds until the battery check lamp flashes twice (Y page 83).


i If the setting of the locking system is


changed within the signal range of the vehi- cle, pressing the & or % button: Rlocks or Runlocks the vehicle


The key now functions as follows: X To unlock the driver's door: press the


% button once.


X To unlock centrally: press the % but-


ton twice.


X To lock centrally: press the & button.


The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as fol- lows: X To unlock the driver's door: touch the inner surface of the door handle on the driver's door.


X To unlock centrally: touch the inner sur-


face of the door handle on the front- passenger door or the rear door.


X To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor


surface on one of the door handles.


X To restore the factory settings: press


and hold down the % and & buttons simultaneously for approximately six sec- onds until the battery check lamp flashes twice (Y page 83).


Emergency key element General notes If the vehicle can no longer be locked or unlocked with the key, use the emergency key element. If you use the emergency key element to unlock and open the driver's door or the boot lid/tailgate, the anti-theft alarm system will be triggered (Y page 75). There are several ways to turn off the alarm: X To turn the alarm off with the key: press


the % or & button on the key.


or X Insert the key into the ignition lock. or X To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS- GO: press the Start/Stop button in the igni- tion lock. The key must be in the vehicle.

If you unlock the vehicle using the emergency key element, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked automatically. X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the


key into the ignition lock.


Removing the emergency key element

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist workshop.


Checking the battery

Doors Important safety notes United Kingdom only: G WARNING When the double locks are activated, the doors can no longer be opened from the inside. People in the vehicle can no longer get out, e.g. in hazardous situations. There is a risk of injury. Therefore, do not leave any people unsuper- vised in the vehicle, particularly children, eld- erly people or people in need of special assis- tance. Do not activate the double lock when people are in the vehicle.


If the vehicle has been locked from the out- side, the double lock function is activated as standard. It is then not possible to open the doors from inside the vehicle. You can deac- tivate the double lock function by deactivat- ing the interior motion sensor (Y page 76). The doors can then be opened from the inside after the vehicle has been locked from the outside. The anti-theft alarm system is trig-


gered if the door is opened from the inside. Switch off the alarm (Y page 75). All countries: G WARNING If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle, they could: Ropen the doors, thus endangering other


people or road users.


Rget out and disrupt traffic. Roperate the vehicle's equipment. Additionally, children could set the vehicle in motion if, for example, they: Rrelease the parking brake. Rshift the automatic transmission out of


parking position P.


Rshift the manual transmission into neutral. Rstart the engine. There is a risk of an accident and injury. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle. Always keep the key out of reach of children.

G WARNING If persons (particularly children) are exposed to heat or cold for a prolonged period, there is a risk of serious or even fatal injuries. Never leave persons (particularly children) unatten- ded in the vehicle.


Unlocking and opening the doors from the inside For all countries except the United King- dom: you can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked. If the vehi- cle has previously been locked with the key or with KEYLESS-GO, opening a door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm system. Switch off the alarm (Y page 75). United Kingdom only: if the vehicle has been locked with the key from the outside, the double-lock function is activated as standard. It is then not possible to open the doors from inside the vehicle. You can deac- tivate the double lock function by deactivat- ing the interior motion sensor (Y page 76). The doors can then be opened from the inside after the vehicle has been locked from the outside. The anti-theft alarm system is trig- gered if the door is opened from the inside. Switch off the alarm (Y page 75). For all countries: You can only open the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they are not secured by the child-proof locks (Y page 66).

Centrally locking and unlocking the vehicle from the inside You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle from the inside.

If all the doors are closed, the vehicle locks. This does not lock or unlock the fuel filler flap. You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from the inside if the vehicle has been locked with the key or KEYLESS-GO. For all countries except the United King- dom: you can open a door from inside the vehicle even if it has been locked. For the United Kingdom only: you can only open a door from inside the vehicle if the dou- ble lock function has been deactivated. You can deactivate the double lock function by deactivating the interior motion sensor (Y page 76). For all countries: You can only open the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they are not secured by the child-proof locks (Y page 66).

Automatic locking feature

X Insert the emergency key element into the lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.


X To deactivate: press and hold button : for approximately five seconds until a tone sounds.


X To activate: press and hold button ; for


approximately five seconds until a tone sounds.


i If you press one of the two buttons and do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has already been selected.


The vehicle is locked automatically when the ignition is switched on and the wheels are turning. You could therefore be locked out if: Rthe vehicle is being pushed. Rthe vehicle is being towed. Rthe vehicle is being tested on a dynamom-


eter.


You can also switch the automatic locking function on and off using the on-board com- puter (Y page 258).

Locking the vehicle (emergency key element) If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the key, use the emergency key element. X Open the driver's door. X Close the front-passenger door, the rear


doors and the boot lid/tailgate.


X Press the locking button (Y page 87).


X Check whether the locking knobs on the front-passenger door and the rear doors are still visible. Press down the locking knobs manually, if necessary (Y page 87).


X Close the driver's door. X Take the emergency key element out of the


key (Y page 82).


X Insert the emergency key element into the lock of the driver's door as far as it will go.

Exhaust gases can enter the vehicle interior if the boot lid/tailgate is open when the engine is run- ning, especially if the vehicle is in motion. There is a risk of poisoning.

Boot lid/tailgate reversing function The boot lid/tailgate is equipped with an automatic reversing feature. It reacts if a solid object obstructs or restricts the boot lid/tail- gate during the closing procedure. The boot lid/tailgate opens again automatically. The automatic reversing function is only an aid and is not a substitute for your attentiveness to the boot lid/tailgate while it is closing. G WARNING The reversing function does not react: Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fin-

Rover the last 8 mm of the closing path This means that the reversing feature cannot prevent someone being trapped in these sit- uations. There is a risk of injury. When closing make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. If someone is trapped: Rpress the F button on the key, or Rpress the remote operating switch on the


driver's door, or

X Press remote operating switch for tail-


gate : until the tailgate is closed.


You can open and close the boot lid/tailgate from the driver's seat when the vehicle is sta- tionary and unlocked.


Limiting the opening angle of the tail- gate (CLS Shooting Brake) Important safety notes ! Make sure there is sufficient clearance to


open the tailgate fully when setting the opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle outside.


To activate You can limit the opening angle of the tail- gate. This is possible in the top half of its opening range, up to approximately 20 cm before the stop. X To open the tailgate: pull the handle on


the tailgate.


X To stop the opening procedure at the desired position: press the closing button (Y page 91) in the tailgate or pull the handle on the outside of the tailgate again.


X To store the position: press and hold the closing button in the tailgate until you hear a short tone. The opening angle limiter is activated. The tailgate then stops in the stored position when opened.


To deactivate X Press and hold the closing button


(Y page 91) in the tailgate until you hear two short tones.


Unlocking the boot (CLS Coupé) ! The boot lid swings upwards when


opened. Therefore, make sure that there is sufficient clearance above the boot lid.


If the boot cannot be unlocked with the key or KEYLESS-GO, use the emergency key ele- ment. If you use the emergency key element to unlock and open the boot lid, the anti-theft alarm system will be triggered (Y page 75).

Side windows Important safety notes G WARNING While opening the side windows, body parts could become trapped between the side win- dow and the door frame as the side window moves. There is a risk of injury. Make sure that nobody touches the side win- dow during the opening procedure. If some- body becomes trapped, release the switch or pull the switch to close the side window again. G WARNING While opening the side windows, body parts in the closing area could become trapped. There is a risk of injury. Make sure that no body parts are in close proximity during the closing procedure. If somebody becomes trapped, release the switch or press the switch to open the side window again.


G WARNING If children operate the side windows they could become trapped, particularly if they are left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury. Activate the override feature for the rear side windows. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehi- cle.


Side window reversing feature The side windows are equipped with an auto- matic reversing feature. If a solid object blocks or restricts a side window during the closing process, the side window opens again automatically. The automatic reversing func- tion is only an aid and is not a substitute for your attentiveness to the side window while it is closing. Proceed as follows if someone is trapped: With the key: Rrelease the & button. Rpress and hold the % button until the


side windows and the sliding sunroof or the panorama sliding sunroof open again.


With KEYLESS-GO: Rrelease the sensor surface on the door han-


dle.


Rpull the door handle immediately and hold

Resetting the side windows If a side window can no longer be closed fully, you must reset it. X Close all doors. X Turn the key to position 1 or 2 in the ignition

X Pull the corresponding switch on the door control panel until the side window is com- pletely closed. (Y page 94)


X Hold the switch for an additional second. If the side window opens again slightly: X Immediately pull the corresponding switch on the door control panel until the side win- dow is completely closed (Y page 94).


X Hold the switch for an additional second. X If the corresponding side window remains closed after the button has been released, the side window has been reset correctly. If this is not the case, repeat the steps above again.

Problems with the side windows G WARNING If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side window closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing function is then not active. Parts of the body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of injury or even fatal injury. Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process, release the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.


Problem A side window cannot be closed because it is blocked by objects, e.g. leaves in the window guide.

Sliding sunroof Important safety notes G WARNING While opening and closing the sliding sunroof, body parts in close proximity could become trapped. There is a risk of injury. Make sure that no body parts are in close proximity during the opening and closing pro- cedures. If somebody becomes trapped: Rrelease the switch immediately, or Rduring automatic operation, push the

The opening or closing procedure will be stop- ped. G WARNING If children operate the sliding sunroof they could become trapped, particularly if they are left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury. ! Only open the panorama sliding sunroof if it is free of snow and ice. Otherwise, mal- functions may occur.

i Resonance noises can occur in addition to the usual airflow noises when the sliding sunroof is open. They are caused by minor pressure fluctuations in the vehicle interior. To reduce or eliminate these noises: Rchange the position of the sliding sunroof Ropen a side window Ropen the sliding sunroof to the comfort

Sliding sunroof reversing feature The sliding sunroof is equipped with an auto- matic reversing feature. If a solid object blocks or restricts the sliding sunroof during the closing process, the sliding sunroof opens again automatically. The automatic reversing function is only an aid and is not a substitute for your attentiveness to the sliding sunroof while it is closing. G WARNING The reversing function does not react: Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fin-

Rover the last 4 mm of the closing movement Rduring resetting Rwhen closing the sliding sunroof again man- ually immediately after automatic reversing This means that the reversing function cannot prevent someone being trapped in these sit- uations. There is a risk of injury. When closing make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. i If you press the 3 switch beyond the point of resistance, an automatic opening/ closing process is started in the corre- sponding direction. When opening, the slid- ing sunroof first automatically moves to comfort setting. If you press it again, the sliding sunroof opens completely. You can stop automatic operation by pressing again.


The sun protection cover automatically opens along with the sliding sunroof. You can open or close the sun protection cover manually when the sliding sunroof is raised or closed. i You can continue to operate the sliding sunroof after switching off the engine or removing the key. This function remains active for five minutes or until you open a front door.


Rain-closing feature When the key is in position 0 in the ignition lock or is removed, the sliding sunroof closes automatically: Rif it starts to rain Rat extreme outside temperatures Rafter six hours Rif there is a malfunction in the power supply The rear of the sliding sunroof is then raised in order to ventilate the vehicle interior. i If the sliding sunroof is obstructed when being closed by the rain-closing feature, it opens again slightly. The rain-closing fea- ture is then deactivated.


The sliding sunroof does not close if: Rit is raised at the rear Rit is blocked Rno rain is falling on the area of the wind-


screen being monitored by the rain sensor. If the vehicle, for example, is under a bridge or in a carport, the field of the sensor may be covered.


Resetting ! If the sliding sunroof still cannot be


opened or closed fully after resetting, con- tact a qualified specialist workshop.


Reset the sliding sunroof if it does not move smoothly. X Turn the key to position 1 or 2 in the ignition

Make sure that no one has any part of their body within the sweep of the seat when adjusting it. G WARNING The head restraints cannot provide the inten- ded protection unless they are fitted and adjusted correctly. There is an increased risk of injury to the head and neck in the event of an accident or sudden braking, for example. Always drive with the head restraints fitted. Ensure that the centre of the head restraints support the back of each vehicle occupant's head at eye level before driving off. G WARNING The seat belt does not offer the intended level of protection if the backrest is not in the upright position. When braking or in the event of an accident, you could slide underneath the seat belt and sustain abdomen or neck inju- ries, for example. This poses an increased risk of injury or even fatal injury. Adjust the seat properly before beginning your journey. Always make sure that the seat is in the upright position.


! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: Rdo not spill any liquids on the seats. If


liquid is spilled on the seats, dry them as soon as possible.


Rif the seat covers are damp or wet, do not


switch on the seat heating. The seat

heating should also not be used to dry the seats.


Rclean the seat covers as recommended;

Rdo not transport heavy loads on the


seats. Do not place sharp objects on the seat cushions, e.g. knives, nails or tools. The seats should only be occupied by passengers, if possible.


Rwhen the seat heating is in operation, do not cover the seats with insulating mate- rials, e.g. blankets, coats, bags, seat cov- ers, child seats or booster seats.


! Make sure that there are no objects in the footwell or behind the seats when moving the seat back. There is a risk that the seats and/or the objects could be damaged.


i The head restraints in the front seats are


fitted with the NECK-PRO system (Y page 49). For this reason, it is not pos- sible to remove the head restraints from the front seats. For more information, contact a qualified specialist workshop.
