Rear Power Distribution Center

MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 427

CAUTION!

• When installing the power distribution center cover, it is important to ensure the cover is prop- erly positioned and fully latched. Failure to do so may allow water to get into the power distribution center and possibly result in an electrical system failure. • When replacing a blown fuse, it is important to use only a fuse having the correct amperage rating. The use of a fuse with a rating other than indicated may result in a dangerous electrical system over- load. If a properly rated fuse continues to blow, it indicates a problem in the circuit that must be corrected.

MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 431

VEHICLE STORAGE If you are leaving your vehicle dormant for more than 21 days, you may want to take these steps to protect your battery. • Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. • Anytime you store your vehicle, or keep it out of service (i.e., vacation) for two weeks or more, run the air conditioning system at idle for about five minutes in the fresh air and high blower setting. This will ensure adequate system lubrication to minimize the possibility of compressor damage when the system is started again.

BULB REPLACEMENT

Low Beam Headlamp, High Beam Headlamp, Park/Turn Lamp — Models With Halogen Headlamps — If Equipped See your authorized dealer for bulb replacement. Low Beam Headlamp, High Beam Headlamp, And Park/Turn Lamp — Models With High Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps — If Equipped

HID Headlamps The headlamps are a type of high voltage discharge tube. High voltage can remain in the circuit even with the headlamp switch off and the key removed. Because of this, you should not attempt to service a headlamp bulb yourself. If a headlamp bulb fails, take your vehicle to an authorized dealer for service.

MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 433

WARNING!

A transient high voltage occurs at the bulb sockets of HID headlamps when the headlamp switch is turned ON. It may cause serious electrical shock or electro- cution if not serviced properly. See your authorized dealer for service.

NOTE: On vehicles equipped with HID headlamps, when the headlamps are turned on, there is a blue hue to the lamps. This diminishes and becomes more white after approximately 10 seconds, as the system charges.

434 MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE Front/Rear Side Marker Lamp

1. Remove the front/rear side marker. Use a fiber stick or similar tool to gently pry the lamp on the outboard side to disengage the clip. NOTE: • If a screwdriver is used, make sure a soft material is placed between the vehicle body and tool so not to scratch the paint.

2. Rotate the bulb’s socket counterclockwise, and remove the bulb and socket assembly from the housing. 3. Pull the bulb out of the socket and insert the replace- ment bulb. 4. Install the bulb and socket assembly into the housing, and rotate the socket clockwise to lock it in place. 5. Reinstall the front/rear side marker.

Tail/Turn And Stop Lamp

1. Open the trunk. 2. Using a screwdriver, remove the tail lamp retainer.

3. Remove the fasteners from the back of the tail lamp assembly.

MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 435

4. Pull back the trunk liner. 5. Remove the remaining fasteners from the back of the tail lamp assembly. 6. Pull the tail lamp assembly clear from the vehicle to access the bulbs.

7. Push the electrical connector locking tab to the side. 8. Disconnect the electrical connector. 9. Turn the appropriate bulb and socket assembly coun- terclockwise to remove it from the tail lamp assembly. 10. Disconnect the bulb from the socket assembly and install the replacement bulb.

436 MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE 11. Reinstall the bulb and socket assembly into the tail lamp assembly, and then turn it clockwise. 12. Reinstall the tail lamp assembly, fasteners, electrical connector, and trunk liner. 13. Reinstall tail lamp retainer.

14. Close the trunk. Center Tail/Backup Lamp See your authorized dealer for bulb replacement. Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) The CHMSL uses LED lamps that are not serviceable separately. The CHMSL must be replaced as an assembly, see your authorized dealer.

License Lamp

1. Remove the screws securing the lamp to the rear fascia. 2. Remove the bulb and socket assembly. 3. Disconnect the bulb from the socket assembly and install the replacement bulb.

442 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE The Scheduled Maintenance services listed in this manual must be done at the times or mileages specified to protect your vehicle warranty and ensure the best vehicle performance and reliability. More frequent main- tenance may be needed for vehicles in severe operating conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip driving. Inspection and service should also be done anytime a malfunction is suspected. Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic oil change indicator system. The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. On Electronic Vehicle (EVIC) equipped vehicles, “Oil Change Required” will be dis- played in the EVIC and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary.

Information Center

On Non-EVIC equipped vehicles, “Change Oil” will flash in the instrument cluster odometer and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary. Based on engine operation conditions, the oil change indicator message will illuminate. This means that ser- vice is required for your vehicle. Operating conditions such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or cold ambient temperatures, and E85 fuel usage will influence when the “Change Oil” message is displayed. Depending on operating conditions, the message may appear as early as 3,500 miles (5 630 km) since last reset. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km).

NOTE: • The oil change indicator message will not monitor the time since the last oil change. Change your vehicle’s oil if it has been six months since your last oil change, even if the oil change indicator message is NOT illuminated. • Change your engine oil more often if you drive your • Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 8,000 miles (13 000 km) or six months, which- ever comes first.

vehicle off-road for an extended period of time.

Your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator message after completing the scheduled oil change. If a scheduled oil change is performed by someone other

SUGGESTIONS FOR OBTAINING SERVICE FOR YOUR VEHICLE

Prepare For The Appointment If you’re having warranty work done, be sure to have the right papers with you. Take your warranty folder. All work to be performed may not be covered by the warranty. Discuss additional charges with the service manager. Keep a maintenance log of your vehicle’s service history. This can often provide a clue to the current problem. Prepare A List Make a written list of your vehicle’s problems or the specific work you want done. If you’ve had an accident or work done that is not on your maintenance log, let the service advisor know. Be Reasonable With Requests If you list a number of items and you must have your vehicle by the end of the day, discuss the situation with

IF YOU NEED CONSUMER ASSISTANCE 461
the service advisor and list the items in order of priority. At many authorized dealers, you may obtain a rental vehicle at a minimal daily charge. If you need a rental, it is advisable to make these arrangements when you call for an appointment.

IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE The manufacturer and its authorized dealers are vitally interested in your satisfaction. We want you to be happy with our products and services. Warranty service must be done by an authorized dealer. We strongly recommend that you take the vehicle to an authorized dealer. The manufacturer’s authorized dealers have the facilities, factory-trained technicians, special tools, and the latest information to ensure the vehicle is fixed correctly and in a timely manner.

462 IF YOU NEED CONSUMER ASSISTANCE This is why you should always talk to an authorized dealer’s service manager first. Most matters can be re- solved with this process. • If for some reason you are still not satisfied, talk to the general manager or owner of the authorized dealer- ship. Any communication to the manufacturer’s customer cen- ter should include the following information: • Owner’s name and address • Owner’s telephone number (home and office) • Authorized dealership name • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) • Vehicle delivery date and mileage

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION UNIFORM TIRE QUALITY GRADES The following tire grading categories were established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The specific grade rating assigned by the tire’s manufacturer in each category is shown on the sidewall of the tires on your vehicle. All passenger car tires must conform to Federal safety requirements in addition to these grades. Treadwear The Treadwear grade is a comparative rating, based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart

IF YOU NEED CONSUMER ASSISTANCE 467
significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices, and differences in road charac- teristics and climate. Traction Grades The Traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C. These grades represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement, as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction perfor- mance.

WARNING!

The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on straight-ahead braking traction tests, and does not include acceleration, cornering, hydroplaning, or peak traction characteristics.

468 IF YOU NEED CONSUMER ASSISTANCE Temperature Grades The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat, when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level of performance, which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109. Grades B and A repre- sent higher levels of performance on the laboratory test wheel, than the minimum required by law.

WARNING!

The temperature grade for this tire is established for a tire that is properly inflated and not overloaded. Excessive speed, under-inflation, or excessive load- ing, either separately or in combination, can cause heat buildup and possible tire failure.
