I am thinkin of buyin a sprinter as a first car and i was wondering what i should look for when inspecting it....ie rust or any other things which could be of concern

Cheers

the last thing u want in a drifter is rust.( as you said ) but im sure TWINCAM16 has a few pointers....its either the drivetrain on em or its just his driving ?

Why is it that as soon as someone says sprinter its automatically a drifter. Im sure that all the granny's that I see driving them to church on sunday have their skid tyres ready for a session in the carpark after the sermon.

But valid point from Holdenbeater none the less...

Sprinters have typical rust points that you need to look at then buying (of course someone has probably done a dodgy respray to remove the evidence anyways)

*Inside of door pillars

*Above the windscreen (top corners)

*Under the rear bumper bar (trust me this is the BIG one) get your hand up under there and wipe it, if ur hand comes out orangey red u have a rustie smile.gif

*Along the rubber of the rear hatch

That said and done, australian spec Sprinters have a 4a-c engine (singlecam 1600cc carby) engine. Alright, but the twincam 1600's 4A-GE / GZE engines are where its at.

Also Check the rubber on the rear hatch, major area for water leakage.

towards the front of the rear wheel arch, on the outer skin, is also a common area.

Dont be scared tho if you find that very single one of em has rust, i mean seriously, the car is 20 years old now... *shudders*

As for motors, well as far as i am concerned the stock 4AC is only ever to be used to drive the car home from where ever it was you purchased it, even then i think i would rather tow it...

If you wana keep things simple then put some kind of 4AGE in it, be it a 16v N/A like i had or go all out on the 4AGZE supercharged. This will bolt in, with the usual fuel system modifications (ie carby to efi), with the exception being the 4agze, where slight modifications have to be made to the drivers side engine mount to clear the supercharge. 20V is easy, just cut a hole in the firewall to clear the rear mounted Dizzy (or just use a dam big hammer)

Keeping in mind that you will be using the stock sprinter gearbox that was meant to handle like 48Kw (depending on the direction of wind) with a worked N/A 16v 4AGE i managed to snap 3 of em before i said enough is enough... Unless you shell out for a custom rebilt celica or supra box (big $$$) you dont really have much other alternative.

Or you could just slot in a Nissan motor such as a CA18DET or SR20DET and basicly never have to worry about snapping box's again.

Also another couple of areas that are very weak is the Diff and the cars stock braking system.

Some people have managed to survive on the stock Non lsd drum brake rear end with worked 4AGZE's and ever had a problem, i still managed to smooth 50% of the crown wheel on my diff

As for the brakes.... well.... they are shit... nothing else to be said... i had the stock setup on mine with some kick ass pads and that was "ok" but dont expect them to save you. Finding upgrades is also difficult as only japan and the US got the rear disc / diff setup and the vented front rotors... I have only recently been able to track down these items and trust me, if you find em, you will be paying big $ for em.

Have i missed anything?
