carby cleaner: $5

Flat blade screw driver: $3

new air filter: $10

tuning and replacing the caby/filter yourself: priceless

For every thing else.. there is the trading post.

I wabt something so make it go faster, what will the carby cleaner and air filter do?

Don't waste your money on it seriously. It would be just like flogging a dead horse, you wont make much noticable power even if you do exhaust/intake mods. Leave it alone & buy something with some potential smile.gif

If you really want to do something with it, get a cheap mild steel 2" exhaust made up (by cheap I mean using mild steel press bent pipe not mandrel and a cheap straight through rear muffler), don't bother with headers as your budget won't cover it. Then spend the rest getting the car running well (plugs, leads, dizzy cap/rotor, points, timing, mixtures etc.) Then if you really want to squeeze a little more power and are prepared to use a descent octane fuel you could wind the timing advance up a little just watch out for pinging.

After saying all this I would still take everyone elses advice and not bother laugh.gif

500 bucks should cover extractors + 2 1/4" exhaust + straight through muffler on a carbied car.

Seriously.

§ileightĄ
Post #9

Yeah it probably would, but it would suck up the whole lot and is it really worth it????

Better than forking out for plugs/leads/tune which will get you nowhere if its already in tune and has perfectly working plugs and leads.

thats the whole point, is it worth it....

If its all he can afford, leave him to it.

Suggest some helpful things maybe instead of bagging him out.

Maybe he likes the car? Maybe its his first car?

hmmm... $500. Is it manual ?? if so maybe see if u can get the original cam reground. This or any other breathing mod would prob give the best result. Good luck biggrin.gif

Well I didn't actually say to buy all that stuff, just to get the car in good tune and to check/replace those things if needed, it goes both ways, there is no point in trying to get more power if the car isn't in descent running condition first. And I was only talking about the extractors being worth it at this stage or not, didn't mean the whole car. Hey I started out with a piece of shit RA40 celica

Thanks mismo girl, i do like my car, it is a manual but if there is nothing i can do to it, maybe ill stap a turbo on it.

Now your talkin 8)

yeah but if you can only afford 500 bucks on mods....can you afford the rise in insurance???

Also, doing mods on the cheap can sometimes be more detrimental than helpful, so be careful. If you do like your car and it is only your first car, maybe (if needed) you should look at general appearance and getting it running well first.

While doing this, put money away for another car or better mods.

Just a few words from someone who has spent alot of money on cars to see very little return, although I do own a nice car now and am looking at doing very little mods that will change the power dramatically. Luck of having 200SX i guess 8)

Either way, enjoy your car and whatever you do to it.

actually if i was in your situation, i would be looking more at suspension... Personally i believe that this is more important than power.

Also look at ya tyres... get some good rubber happening. no point going fast if you cant stop or turn when you want too.

A while back just for fun, i put my old 15" rims and Goodyear 205/50/15 tyres on my mums lanos while my AE82 Twincam16 was swallowing a new clutch... it changed it compleatley...

if you already have good rubber, try looking at ya springs and shocks... maybe even consider a swaybar upgrade...

turbos cant be 'strapped on'

read up about hat needs to be done b4 you even suggest that your gonna 'throw a turbo at it'.

www.hotgemini.com has plenty of 14yrs who are gonan slap a turbo on their gemi and run 12's... tho there are quite a few guys there who are above that shit.

Err yes they can, altho using a strap wont have much of a positive effect :?

I aint saying that its the best way to do it, and its quite possible that piston 2 might wonder next door to say hello to piston 3, but dont say it cant be done...

Caus in fact with a carby fed car, a suck thru turbo setup is piss easy to do... its all in the jets...

V8 Dave
Post #23

fuckin politacal correctness around here.

it cant be done easily, cheaply, effectively or safely for $500. and if it IS done.. its not going to last too long.

Suck thrus have many draw backs, and not 'piss easy'

you got to get a carby that'll work in the application

the jets

the right jets!!

dizzy has to be locked so it wont change under boost and vaccum

you cant intercool a suck thru set up, ok u can, but your a dick if u do

you will need to change the seals in the turbo.. to carbon seals.

there is alot of thought, time and effort behind any sor tof performance upgrade.. especially turbo charging.

TwinCam16
Post #24

lol, true, i never said it was the best way... not to mention what would happen if it was to backfire while an intercooler was fitted tongue.gif

V8 Dave
Post #25

i would like to watch a 'suck-thru carby-fed turbo-intercooled' car back fire tongue.gif

from a safe distance of course... and its a carbied car... back fires are inevitable. biggrin.gif

Alright so the strap on turbo thing was a bad idea, but the car runs, its registered and road worthy*, the front and back tyres are new and it has king springs on the back, and something else on the front. So basicly you are all saying i can do jack shit to the engine in that price range?, Someone tell me what i can do and for how much then, forget the turbo idea.

TwinCam16
Post #29

look at ya shocks, swaybars, bushes maybe ya brake rotors....

Rancher
Post #30

Im not farmilier with a lot of things im still learning, but my shocks are fine, what a swaybars and bushes?

TwinCam16
Post #31

swaybars reduce the roll in the car when you go into a corner, bushes are the little rubber things that hold it in place...

Upgrading the front bar is a good place to start, check out the whiteline website if you wana learn a few tips n tricks www.whiteline.com.au
