For easy installation of child restraints, your vehicle has two child restraint an- chorages under the rear seat cushion. When installing a child restraint, follow both the instructions here and those pro- vided by the manufacturer of your child restraint.

When installing a child restraint system, follow the instructions provided by its manufacturer. Depending on the type of your child re- straint system, you will need a locking clip to install a child restraint system properly. If your child restraint system does not provide a locking clip, you can purchase one at your Toyota dealer. (See “—Child restraint system” on page 50.)

CAUTION

D Extreme Hazard! Do not use a rear- ward facing child restraint on a seat protected by an airbag in front of it! This is because the force of the rapid inflation of the front pas- senger airbag can cause death or serious injury to the child. Vehicles with the front passenger airbag dis- play a warning label on the passen- ger side instrument panel as shown above to remind you not to put a rear−facing child restraint system on the front passenger seat at any time.

Reminder Light

The light acts as a reminder to have the front passenger buckle up the seat belt. Once the ignition key is turned to “ON”, the reminder light flashes if a passenger sits in the front passenger seat and does not fasten the seat belt. Unless the front passenger fastens the belt, the light con- tinues flashing. If luggage or other load is placed on the front passenger seat, depending on its weight and how it is placed on the seat, built−in sensors in the seat cushion may detect the pressure, causing the reminder light

to flash.

(d) Charging System Warning Light This warning light comes on when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion, and goes off when the engine is started. When there are problems in the charging system while the engine is running, the warning light comes on.

NOTICE

When the charging system warning light comes on while the engine is running, malfunctions such as the en- gine drive belt being broken may have occurred. If the warning light comes on, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

(g) Low Fuel Level Warning Light This light comes on when the fuel level in the tank becomes nearly empty. Fill up the tank as soon as possible. On inclines or curves, due to the move- level ment of fuel in the tank, the low fuel warning light may come on earlier than usual. (h) “ABS” Warning Light

(on some models)

The light comes on when the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position. If the anti− lock brake system works properly, the light turns off after a few seconds. There- after, if the system malfunctions, the light comes on again. When the “ABS” warning light the anti−lock brake system does not operate so that the wheels could lock up during a sudden braking or braking on slippery road surfaces, but the brake system still operates conventionally.

At this time, vibration may occur. Howev- er, if you depress the accelerator pedal more firmly and slowly, you can drive your vehicle at low speeds. Have your Toyota checked by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. Even if the abnormality in the electronic throttle control system (gasoline engine) or electronic engine control system (diesel engine) is corrected during low speed driv- ing, the system may not be recovered until the engine is stopped and the ignition key is turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.

CAUTION

Gasoline engine: Be especially careful to prevent erro- neous pedal operation.

(j) SRS Warning Light This indicator comes on when the igni- tion key is turned to the “ON” position. It goes off after about 6 seconds. This means the SRS airbags and seat belt pretensioners are operating properly. This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front airbag sen- sors, seat belt pretensioner assemblies, inflators, interconnecting wiring and power sources. If any of the following conditions occurs, this indicates a malfunction of the airbags or seat belt pretensioners. Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. Light (diesel engine)

This light will come on every time when the trip amount gets 150000 km in kilome- ter reading or 90000 miles in mile reading to indicate that the timing belt should be replaced. When it comes on, have the belt replaced immediately and the warning light reset by your Toyota dealer.

NOTICE

Continued driving without having the belt replaced will result in a broken belt and engine damage.

(l) Fuel System Warning Light

(diesel engine)

The light has two modes: When the light flashes, it warns that the amount of accumulated water in the fuel filter has reached the specified level. In this case, drain the water immediately. (See page 246 for instructions for how to drain the water.) When the light comes on, it warns that there may be a problem with the fuel system. In this case, have your vehicle checked and the warning light reset by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the selector lever must be put in the “P” position before pushing the key. Once you remove the key, the engine im- mobilizer system is automatically set. (See “Engine immobilizer system” on page 12.) When starting the engine, the key may seem stuck at the “LOCK” position. To free it, first be sure the key is pushed all the way in, and then rock the steering wheel slightly while turning the key gently.
