쐌 For most effective protection when the vehicle is in motion, the seat should be upright. Always sit well back in the seat and adjust the seat belt properly. See “Precautions on seat belt usage” later in this section.

WARNING

쐌 Do not ride in a moving vehicle when the seatback is reclined. This can be dangerous. The shoulder belt will not be against your body. In an accident you could be thrown into it and re- ceive neck or other serious injuries. You could also slide under the lap belt and receive serious internal injuries.

Ventilated net seats (if so equipped) The ventilated net seats are designed for good ventilation while driving. Net cloth is used on the surface of the seatback and the cushion as shown.

TILTING AND RECLINING PASSENGER’S SEAT FROM DRIVER’S SEAT The passenger seatback can be adjusted from the driver’s seat to make it easier for the driver to use the rear parcel box or rear floor box, or to help the passenger get in the vehicle. Coupe models (manual type) To tilt or recline the passenger seatback, pull up the lever 쎻A located on the back side of it, and move the seatback forward or backward.

Seatback tilt cancel switch: When the seatback tilt cancel switch 쎻C is pushed the tilting/reclining operation using the power seat- back tilt switch 쎻B will be cancelled. Only the sliding/reclining switches (located on the seat cushion) are operational. Push the seatback tilt cancel switch to the AUTO position to reactivate the power seatback tilt switch. This cancel switch is linked with the automatic passenger seatback tilt function of the soft top operation. See “Soft top operation” in the “3. Pre-driving checks and adjustments” section.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM PRECAUTIONS ON SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM This Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) sec- tion contains important information concerning the driver and passenger front impact supple- mental air bags, front seat side-impact supple- mental air bags, curtain side-impact air bags and front seat pre-tensioner seat belts. Supplemental front-impact air bag system: This system can help cushion the impact force to the face and chest of the driver and front passenger in certain frontal collisions. Supplemental side-impact air bag system (if so equipped): This system can help cushion the impact force to the chest area of the driver and front passenger in certain side impact colli- sions. The front seat side-impact supplemental air bags are designed to inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted. Supplemental curtain side-impact air bag system (if so equipped for Coupe models): This system can help cushion the impact force to the head of occupants in certain side impact collisions. The curtain side-impact air bags are designed to inflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted. The supplemental restraint system is designed to supplement the crash protection provided

쐌 The driver and front passenger seat belt buckles are equipped with sen- sors that detect if the seat belts are fastened. The air bag system moni- tors the severity of a collision and then inflates the air bags based on belt usage. Failure to properly wear seat belts can increase the risk or severity of injury in an accident.

쐌 Keep hands on the outside of the steering wheel. Placing them inside the steering wheel rim could increase the risk that they are injured when the supplemental front air bag in- flates.

WARNING

쐌 The supplemental front air bags ordi- narily will not inflate in the event of a side impact, rear impact, roll over, or lower severity frontal collision. Al- ways wear your seat belts to help reduce the risk or severity of injury in various kinds of accidents.

쐌 The seat belts and the supplemental front air bags are most effective

Supplemental front air bag system The driver supplemental air bag is located in the center of the steering wheel; the front passenger supplemental air bag is mounted in the instru- ment panel. These systems are designed to meet optional certification requirements under U.S. regulations. They are also permitted in Canada. The optional certification allows front air bags to be designed to inflate somewhat less forcefully than previously. However, all of the information, cautions and warnings in this manual still apply and must be followed. Vehicle damage (or lack of it) is not always an indication of proper supplemental air bag operation. The supplemental air bag system has dual stage inflators for both the driver and passenger air bags. The system monitors information from the crash zone sensor, the diagnosis sensor unit and seat belt buckle sensors that detect if the seat belts are fastened, inflator operation is based on the severity of a collision and whether the seat belts are being used. Only one front air bag may inflate in a crash, depending on the crash sever- ity and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted. This does not indicate improper per- formance of the system. If you have any ques- tions about the performance of your air bag system, please contact your NISSAN dealer.

When the supplemental front air bag inflates, a fairly loud noise may be heard, followed by release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. Care should be taken not to inhale it, as it may cause irritation and choking. Those with a history of a breathing condition should get fresh air promptly. 쐌 Do not place any objects on the steering wheel pad or on the instru- ment panel. Also, do not place any objects between any occupant and

the steering wheel or instrument panel. Such objects may become dangerous projectiles and cause in- jury if the supplemental front air bag inflates.

쐌 Right after inflation, several air bag system components will be hot. Do not touch them; you may severely burn yourself.

쐌 No unauthorized changes should be made to any components or wiring of the supplemental front air bag sys- tem. This is to prevent accidental in- flation of the air bag or damage to the air bag system.

쐌 Do not make unauthorized changes to your vehicle’s electrical system, suspension system or front end structure. This could affect proper operation of the supplemental air bag system.

쐌 Tampering with the supplemental front air bag system may result in injury. Tampering serious personal

includes changes to the steering wheel and the instrument panel as- sembly by placing material over the steering wheel pad, above the dash- board, or by installing additional trim material around the air bag system. 쐌 Work around and on the supplemen- tal front air bag system should be done by a NISSAN dealer. Installa- tion of electrical equipment should also be done by a NISSAN dealer. The yellow and orange Supplemental Restrain System (SRS) wiring and connectors should not be modified or disconnected. Unauthorized electri- cal test equipment and probing de- vices should not be used on the air bag system.

쐌 A cracked windshield should be re- placed immediately by a qualified re- pair facility. A cracked windshield could affect inflation of the supple- mental air bag system.

쐌 The SRS wiring harness connectors are yellow and orange for easy

identification.

When selling your vehicle, we request that you inform the buyer about the supplemental front air bag system and guide the buyer to the appro- priate sections in this Owner’s Manual.

Supplemental side air bag and curtain side-impact air bag systems (if so equipped) This section includes the information about both the supplemental side air bag system 쎻A and the supplemental curtain side-impact air bag system 쎻B . Curtain side-impact air bags are not avail- able on Roadster models. The supplemental side air bags are located in the outside of the seatback of the front seats. The supplemental curtain side-impact air bags are located in the side roof rails. impact air bags do not provide restraint to the lower body. Because of this, the force of the side air bag and curtain side-impact air bag inflating can increase the risk of injury if the occupant is too close to, or is against these air bag modules during inflation. The side air bag and curtain side-impact air bag will deflate quickly after the collision is over. After turning the ignition key to the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light illuminates. The air bag warning light will turn off after about 7 seconds if the systems are operational.

쐌 The pre-tensioner seat belt cannot be reused after activation. It must be replaced together with the retractor as a unit.

쐌 If the vehicle becomes involved in a frontal collision but the pre-tensioner is not activated, be sure to have the pre-tensioner system checked and, if necessary, replaced by your NISSAN dealer.

쐌 No unauthorized changes should be made to any components or wiring of the pre-tensioner seat belt system. This is to prevent accidental activa- tion of the pre-tensioner seat belt or damage to the pre-tensioner seat belt operation. Tampering with the pre-tensioner seat belt system may result in serious personal injury.

쐌 Work around and on the pre- tensioner seat belt system should be done by a NISSAN dealer. Installa- tion of electrical equipment should also be done by a NISSAN dealer. Unauthorized electrical test equip- ment and probing devices should not be used on the pre-tensioner seat belt system.

쐌 If you need to dispose of the pre- tensioner or scrap the vehicle, con- tact a NISSAN dealer. Correct pre- tensioner disposal procedures are set forth in the appropriate NISSAN Service Manual. Incorrect disposal procedures could cause personal injury.

The front seat pre-tensioner seat belt system activates in conjunction with the supplemental front air bag. Working with the seat belt retrac- tor, it helps tighten the seat belt the instant the vehicle becomes involved in certain types of collisions, helping to restrain front seat occu- pants.

retractor. These seat belts are used the same as conventional seat belts. When the pre-tensioner seat belt activates, smoke is released and a loud noise may be heard. The smoke is not harmful, but care should be taken not to inhale it as it may cause irritation and choking. Those with a history of a breathing condition should get fresh air promptly. If any abnormality occurs in the pre-tensioner seat belt system, the supplemental air bag warn- ing light will not come on, will flash inter- mittently or will turn on for 7 seconds and remain on after the ignition key has been turned to the ON or START position. In this case, the pre- tensioner seat belt may not function properly. They must be checked and repaired. Take your vehicle to the nearest NISSAN dealer. When selling your vehicle, we request that you inform the buyer about the pre-tensioner seat belt system and guide the buyer to the appro- priate sections in this Owner’s Manual.

PRECAUTIONS ON SEAT BELT USAGE If you are wearing your seat belt properly ad- justed and you are sitting upright and well back in your seat, your chances of being injured or killed in an accident and/or the severity of injury may be greatly reduced. NISSAN strongly en- courages you and all of your passengers to buckle up every time you drive, even if your seating position includes a supplemental air bag. Most states, provinces or territories re- quire that seat belts be worn at all times when a vehicle is being driven.

쐌 Every person who drives or rides in this vehicle should use a seat belt at all times.

쐌 The belt should be properly adjusted to a snug fit. Failure to do so may reduce the effectiveness of the entire restraint system and increase the

쐌 Always route the shoulder belt over your shoulder and across your chest. Never run the belt behind your back under your arm or across your neck. The belt should be away from your face and neck, but not falling off your shoulder.

AFTER AN AIR BAG ON/OFF SWITCH IS INSTALLED

Your vehicle is equipped with a supplemental front impact air bag system for the front passen- ger. See “Supplemental restraint system” earlier in this section. Therefore, children 12 or under should not ride in this vehicle without installing an air bag ON/OFF switch. OBTAINING AN AIR BAG ON/OFF SWITCH If you must transport a child in this vehicle, you may be eligible to have an air bag ON/OFF switch installed. US and Canadian governments have procedures that allow you to apply for permission to have your vehicle fitted with an air bag ON/OFF switch. Such a switch is available for purchase from NISSAN. If you have ques- tions about the government application proce- dures, contact the NISSAN Consumer Affairs Department listed earlier in this manual.

Infants and children need special pro- tection. The vehicle’s seat belts may not fit them properly. The shoulder belt may come too close to the face or neck. The lap belt may not fit over their small hip bones. In an accident, an improperly fitting seat belt could cause serious or fatal injury. Always use appropriate child restraints.

All US states and provinces of Canada require the use of approved child restraints for infants and small children. (See “Child restraints” later in this section.) In addition, there are many types of child re- straints available for larger children which should be used for maximum protection. When fastening the seat belts, be cer- tain that seatbacks are completely se- cured in the latched position. If they are not completely secured, passengers may be injured in an accident or sudden stop.

Fastening the seat belts 1. Adjust the seat. See “Seats” earlier in this

2. Slowly pull the seat belt out of the retractor and insert the tongue into the buckle until it clicks.

The retractor is designed to lock during a sudden stop or on impact. A slow pulling motion will permit the belt to move, and allow you some freedom of movement in the seat. 3. Position the lap belt portion low and snug

on the hips as shown.

4. Pull

the shoulder belt portion toward the retractor to take up extra slack. Make sure the shoulder belt is routed over your shoulder and across your chest.

The front passenger seat belt has a cinching mechanism for child restraint installation. It is referred to as the automatic locking mode. (Also remember, if you need to install a child restraint, first obtain an air bag ON/OFF switch and turn the passenger air bag OFF.)

When the cinching mechanism is activated the seat belt cannot be withdrawn again until the seat belt tongue is detached from the buckle and fully retracted. For additional information, see

SEAT BELT EXTENDERS If, because of body size or driving position, it is not possible to properly fit the lap-shoulder belt and fasten it, an extender is available. The ex- tender adds approximately 8 inches (200 mm) of length and may be used for either the driver or passenger seating position. See your NISSAN dealer for assistance if the extender is required.

WARNING

쐌 Only NISSAN seat belt extenders, made by the same company which made the original equipment belts, should be used with NISSAN seat belts.

쐌 Persons who can use the standard seat belt should not use an extender. Such unnecessary use could result in serious personal injury in the event of an accident.

쐌 Never use seat belt extenders to in- stall child restraints. If the child re- straint is not secured properly, the child could be seriously injured in a collision or a sudden stop. (Also re-

SEAT BELT MAINTENANCE 쐌 To clean the seat belt webbings, apply a mild soap solution or any solution recom- mended for cleaning upholstery or carpets. Then brush the webbing, wipe it with a cloth and allow it to dry in the shade. Do not allow the seat belts to retract until they are com- pletely dry.

쐌 If dirt builds up in the shoulder belt guide of the seat belt anchors, the seat belts may retract slowly. Wipe the shoulder belt guide with a clean, dry cloth.

쐌 Periodically check to see that the seat belt and the metal components such as flexible wires buckles, tongues, retractors, and anchors work properly. If loose parts, deterioration, cuts or other damage on the webbing is found, the entire belt assembly should be replaced.

In general, child restraints are designed to be installed with the lap portion of a three-point type seat belt. The proper restraint depends on the child’s size. Generally, infants (up to about 1 year and less than 20 lb (9 kg)) should be placed in rear facing child restraints. Front facing child restraints are available for children who outgrow rear facing child restraints. Child restraints for infants and children of various sizes are offered by several manufacturers. When selecting any child restraint, keep the following points in mind: 쐌 choose only a restraint with a label certifying that it complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.

쐌 check the child restraint in your vehicle to be sure it is compatible with the vehicle’s seat and seat belt system.

SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER Speedometer The speedometer indicates vehicle speed. Odometer/Twin trip odometer The odometer/twin trip odometer are displayed when the ignition key is in the ON position. The odometer records the total distance the vehicle has been driven. The twin trip odometer records the distance of individual trips.

TACHOMETER The tachometer indicates engine speed in revo- lutions per minute (rpm).

CAUTION

When engine speed approaches the red zone, shift to a higher gear. Operating the engine in the red zone may cause serious engine damage.

ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE The gauge indicates the engine coolant tem- perature. The engine coolant temperature will vary with the outside air temperature and driving conditions.

The low fuel warning light comes on when the fuel tank is getting low. Refuel as soon as it is convenient, preferably before the gauge reaches the E position. There will be a small reserve of fuel in the tank when the fuel gauge needle reaches the E position. The indicates that the fuel filler lid is lo- cated on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.

쐌 If the vehicle runs out of fuel, the lamp (MIL) may come on. Refuel as soon as possible. After a few driving trips, lamp should turn off. If the the lamp remains on after a few driving trips, have the vehicle inspected by a NISSAN dealer.

ENGINE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE The gauge indicates the engine lubrication sys- tem oil pressure while the engine is running. When the engine speed is high, the engine oil pressure is also high. When it is low, the gauge indicates the low oil pressure.

FUEL GAUGE The gauge indicates the approximate fuel level in the tank. The gauge may move slightly during braking, turning, acceleration, or going up or down hill. The gauge needle is designed to move to the E (Empty) position when the ignition key is turned to the OFF position. Refill the fuel tank before the gauge regis- ters the E (Empty) position.

VOLT METER When the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the volt meter indicates the battery voltage; while the engine is running, it indicates the alternator voltage of 11 - 15 volts (normal range 쎻A ). However, while cranking the engine, the volts drop below the normal range. If the needle is not in the normal range 쎻A while the engine is running, it may indicate that the charging system is not functioning properly. Have the system checked by a NISSAN dealer.

The speed indicator in the trip computer indicates the reference speed. The actual speed indicated by the speedometer (com- bination meter) may differ from the one in the trip computer. Outside air temperature (ICY — °F or °C) The outside air temperature is displayed in °F or °C in the range of −22 to 131°F (−30 to 55°C). The outside air temperature mode includes a low temperature warning feature: below 37°F (3°C), the outside air temperature mode is automati- cally selected and the ICY indicator will illumi- nate in order to draw the driver’s attention. Press the mode switch 쎻A if you wish to return to the mode that was selected before the warning occurred. The ICY indicator will continue blink- ing as long as the temperature remains below 39°F (4°C).

TRIP COMPUTER The display of the trip computer is situated in the triple meter. When the ignition switch is turned to ON, the display scrolls all the modes of the trip computer and then shows the mode chosen before the ignition switch is turned OFF.

The ambient temperature sensor is located in front of the radiator. The sensor may be affected by road or engine heat, wind directions and other driving conditions. The display may differ from the actual ambient the temperature displayed on various signs or bill- boards. Distance to empty (dte — mls or km) The distance to empty (dte) mode provides you with an estimation of the distance that can be driven before refueling. The dte is constantly being calculated, based on the amount of fuel in the fuel tank and the actual fuel consumption. The display is updated every 30 seconds. The dte mode includes a low range warning feature: when the fuel level is low, the dte mode is automatically selected and the digits blink in order to draw the driver’s attention. Press the mode switch 쎻A if you wish to return to the mode that was selected before the warning occurred. The dte indicator will remain blinking until the vehicle is refuelled.
