Engine: L18

Exhaust: 2 inch extractors and exhaust.

Suspension: just new springs and shocks.

Wheels:

Modifications: engine changed to L18, Engine cams, twin SU carbies, holden purple paint with gold flicker in it.

Stereo Audio / Visual: nothing worth listing.

Estimated Power: 68kw hahah

This is my Datsun 1600 aka barney the dinosaur, I only just picked it up this week for $2800 and ive already found a few problems with it that the last older didnt bother with. Anyway if anyone knows where I can get a bonnet, the rear IRS and diff or just the diff. the whole car needs a rewire and the engine bay needs a bit of a clean hahah.

In the future i am looking at doing an enginer conversion, i have 3 motors in mind at the moment. I can get a rb20det with gear box of my mate for $800 but I am not sure if the rb20 would fit in the small engine bay. Im also looking at sr20det and 13btt.

All feedback welcome wavey.gif

Go 13B in my opinion, the lumpiness will sound slightly like a twin carby.. tongue.gif
Nice datto. I wouldn't bother with an SR20DET.. Get a SR20VET, much better engines! but rare!..

    RB20 is a shithouse motor.

I know an rb20 is a shit motor but it would be a good motor for a car that weighs 600-700 kg.

I'll do a bit of research on the fj20 motor gutless.

Is the fj20det an older Nissan engine? I think at the moment my engine choice will be the rb20det just because i can get it so cheap with everything I need and it's different. Does anyone know how easy an rb20 conversion is tho?

    FJ20 was in DR30 Skylines and S12 Silvias. Its a 2.0L DOHC 4cyl engine.

Seriously mate, terrible idea on the RB20. I love 6s but you should stay with a 4 on this one and RB20s are just shithouse. There is no respect in doing an RB20 conversion.

sr20vet swap? that's pretty silly to say. First you have to source a RWD SR20DE/T block, then buy the mazworx RWD VE kit, THEN find a VE head.. then paying someone to build it. Would be into the 10grand bracket easily, that's just for the engine+turbo itself, not the rest of the components such as gearbox, etc.

I'd personally go a fj20, it's more period correct, but hard to find now.

L18 stoker? 2.0L, 2.4L? That would keep it stealth so the car is considered unmodified and not needing and engineers certificate or brake upgrade. Plus they have a much better resale value with L-series engine, and no need to cut your front end up for a Intercooler. Although your paint job has kind of ruined the keep-it period correct and value of it. so why not ?

I actually like your colour though, am just saying that it does affect resale on such a classic. smile.gif

    Good luck.

I have been thinking about it and I think a stroker kit and an engine balanced would be the best plus I'm sourcing a subaru LSD 4.1 ratio diff that slots in pretty easy so that after I get the stroker kit I can take it to the local drift track and be able to get it sideways smile.gif

Thanks guys smile.gif I expected more eww you have a 1600 with a l18 in it.. The colour definitely attracts attention. The bad news is I need to probably re wire the whole car and get a new fuse box.

Don't be an idiot and drift this....

    Its a classic Datsun, not a ke70...

i need to do an engine conversion or atleast get a stroker kit and get my engine balanced.

I've found a few forums that say my diff the r160 is the same as the Subaru r160 apart from the Subaru one having an LSD. Does anyone know where I can find a 4.1 ratio one? And does anyone know anyone who has done it?

Why does everyone diss RB20s? Ive had no problems with mine? And goes well too. Although 20s have shit all power in low rpm.

    turbo183
    Post #26

i have no idea why people hate them so much, they are a tiny engine made for high rpm which works great with a light car and a turbo.

Just want to say, nice car, and these things are getting harder to find in decent condition.

As for your ideas for an engine, to put an rb20 in this in my opinion would be a waste of time and money and a good car, you may be able to get the engine cheap but for the money you'll spend in putting it in there, and lets be honest it isn't going to fit straight in, you'll have to modify a few pannels and radiators, you'd be better of going that little bit more and go something else.
I don't know how well the car would handle with the rb20 in it either?

SR20's realy aren't all that they're cracked up to be, FJ20's are alot better in fact of reliability and power for dollar ratio and if you ask anyone that knows FJ20's they'll tell you the same.

If you want a small engine that revs hard then go anything that has a under set up over a rocker set up so either the CA18 or FJ20, or even go down the toyota route seeing as they are better motors again and go for either a 4agte (not a bad choice) or a 3sge beams motor (yeah I know, not cheap).

Personally I'd leave the L18 motor in it, that's kewler to me then any other engine combo.

    Or if you want a 6, go a 1J.

i think my best option is to keep the L18 and just get that engine stroked and balance, that way when these cars get harder to find i will have one with work done to what they come out with. But thanks for the advice escort man smile.gif
