Have you noticed that there's increasingly more and more Toyota Hilux's and Ford Rangers on the road than ever before?

Australian tradies most favourite instant tax-write off is a Ute, so the big manufacturers have been trying to tap into this market for years.

Toyota has done stunningly well with the Hilux, but in recent times you would have thought the Ford Ranger may have been troubling this dominance.

However, the HIlux continues to reign supreme, with official car sales figures throughout 2016 showing that the Toyota Hilux out-sold not only the Ford Ranger, but also outsold ever other car available on the market.

Yes... beleive it or not... the Hilux outsold Corolla's, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30's, etc, with 38,018 Hilux's being registered. The Ranger, meanwhile, is number four year-to-date on 33,587, behind the Corolla (37,403) and Hyundai i30 (34,937) but ahead of the Mazda 3 (32,966).

To give you an idea of how impressive this is; the number of Toyota Hilux's sold this year (just a single model range) outsold the total number of all BMW's, or Mercedes-Benz, or Honda (although Honda is easy to believe).

If you stop and consider that the average dual-cab Hilux sold is over $50k and quite a nice BMW or Merc can be had for that type of price, this is pretty impressive.

So what can we all learn from this...

Well, for one, Australian tradies are doing pretty well for themselves!

Secondly, the instant 100% tax-write off for light commercial vehicles and small businesses (ie, most tradies) shows that the Australian governments tax incentive scheme continues to drive massive sales in this market.

The only worry is that Australian roads may quickly turn into a mirror of America, where every second car on the road is oversized... or will the European fuel efficiency trend reign supreme in the long run?

Only time will tell...
