Hey guys, got a technical question.

How many volts does it take to start a car, would it be 12volts?

My S15 wouldnt start this morning, the Apexi turbo timer was reading only 10 volts, so just thinking that the battery was flat and it wouldnt start?

Any help would be great.

Paul

Ive had a car start at 10v before on numerous occasions, I think ideally its 12v?

starting a car usually runs a 12v circuit, then when the car is running, the ignition runs of a 6v circuit.

Alot of cars wont pulse the injectors on anything less than 11v.

ps. the RX7 starts on 9v. tongue.gif

Paul - I've had the same problem in my car, and the S15 won't kick over on 10v.

I park my car for 1-2 weeks at a time (only use it on weekends now), and during that time the alarm can drain the battery. If I turn the ignition to the ON position and the PFC says I'm reading anything less than 11v, I find the car just doesn't start.

All I get is a "click" from under the bonnet, but nobody's home.

This is pretty much correct.

The amount of draw that the starter motor uses to crank the engine over requires the battery is holding decent charge.

Time to grab some jumper cables and sneak your car up to an unsuspecting BMW driver. tongue.gif

depends on alot of things.. like the motor, how strong the starter motor is, the CCA of the battery.. just roll start the car and take it for a drive

Standard battery should be 12.6V, even though everyone pretty much refers to it as 12V.
It's kind of an unsure science as to what will be enough. Depends what sort of car you have, what temp the battery is at, how the stars are aligned. (okay, maybe not that)

10V is definitely flat though. I would try and keep mine above 12.0V, although I'm sure it can be done with less than that. But try not to let it go low if ya can. Normal car batteries don't take well to a full discharge, shortens their life.

About to get my dual battery setup, so won't have to worry bout it again biggrin.gif

Older cars with points ignition run the ignition off 6V, more modern cars with elctronic ignition run 12V on the ignition circuit.
