The obvious and most cost effective route would be RB30ET/RB30DET

Yes, but if you say you like V8s, I believe the swap to a Holden V8 is a relatively simple one, there are a few R31s around with this conversion.

On the other hand, any RB motor will bolt straight in. Rb20, Rb25, Rb26, Rb30, assuming of course it is a Skyline (rb30 powered) rather than a Pintara (I think CA20 powered??). I'm not sure how different the engine mounts, gearboxes and everything else are between the Skyline and Pintara. I do know the Pintara only has a 25 spline Borg Warner, and the Skyline has a 28 spline, so they have a stronger diff. I believe the brakes are the same between the 2.

Anyway, if it has an Rb30, the simplest, most cost effective and most powerful for fewest $'s option is to turbocharge the existing motor. On the cheap, if it's a strong motor, whack in a decompression plate, buy some turbo gear (available very cheap for rb30's) and retard the timing, fit larger injectors and push 10psi through it and it'll be great fun and should last a fair while. Otherwise, for a few more dollars, pull it out, rebuild it with turbo pistons, and you can go as far as you want with the rebuild (forgies, RB25/26 head), or just do it fairly cheaply (cast turbo compression pistons and then just a basic rebuild), bolt a big turbo on the side and buy an aftermarket computer, microtech or similar. You can make as much power as you want, it's all a matter of what you can afford.

Realise that with much power you will probably smash the standard gearbox (if they're anything like vl's), it would be worthwhile upgrading to Vl turbo (MX7) or similar gearbox at some point.

go a second hand RB25DET. the extra cash ontop of an RB20DET is definately worth it. heaps more torque!

VH45de mate. Nissan 4.5ltr V8 ftw. Very strong motor, easily handle a turbo if you're that way inclined. Vh45 + twin r33 t3s= 600hp on 10psi. Something to think about...
