BoostCruising _ Car Help & Advice _ Usb/ipod Adaptor On Headunit

Posted by: Nvious Dec 25 2006, 07:55 PM

Hey guys.

Is there such thing as a cable that connects from a USB stick to the headunit (with the same connection as ear phones?)

I'm keen on using my 1gig usb stick for the mp3 headunit.. seeing as i waste too many cd-rs..

Nope. I don't see why your that worried, CD's are that cheap these days.

You can buy headunits with USB inputs included, Kenwood and JVC do as few units like this.

Sony (shudders) also do a unit that allows Ipod/MP3 players to be hooked up via a 3.5mm to 3.5mm headphone jack.

As michael has said, brands usually found only at Autobarn/Strathfield/JB have units with a built in USB. Simply plug in your memory stick and play.

My recommendation though, simply buy a CD-RW - I just simply burn my favourite artists on to the cd, listen to it for a while, and when I get sick of it, erase it and put new stuff on. I usually have two of them just in case I get sick really quickly while driving. Saves on CD-Rs, allows you to stick with your (my) reasonably decent headunit and means you don't have to have other crap in the car.

Your other alternative is to simply use/buy an Ipod and buy a kit for that (or cable if applicable).

Are you sure it's not an Aux In? 3.5mm stereo plug?

Could use any form of MP3 player with it then, however sound quality won't be as good, nor the control as a CD can give you..

there are generic ones that plug in you cig lighter as well. they use a FM transmitter to get on to your radio.

blau have recently released one that takes USB and SD cards as well. quite a cool unit.

no its not AUX jack it is a usb port on the front of the head deck. I still prefer my alpine head unit with complete ipod control, you cant get any better than that.

Just buy a "Gigamp3" head unit (fancy trademark name for mp3 player capable of handling data DVD discs)... Theres 4.7Gb of mp3s on a single disc, or 8.5Gb if its dual layer.

Alot of "mp3 player" or "ipod ready!" head units are simply a 3.5mm jack input to plug the headphone output of your mp3 player into - a complete marketing scam.

hi there. i bought a sound 4 head unit from repco recently ( yeah, i know they aren't the best but the rough roads i drive on kill them all, cheap or dear. ) it has a usb plug on the front of it, a cd player, and takes sd cards. the beauty of the setup is my 1gb usb drive holds 20 cds. and it will not skip. it was quite satisfying to be the only person with tunes on a recent trip through central australia.
