excuse the length but I love this car... I hate having to do this but unfortunately my XB Falcon 500 is reluctantly up for sale. Due to financial reasons I have to let her go. This car would suit someone who wants a very fresh car, as I have not even done 1000klms in her since the build, as I was not expecting to have to sell her and have been working on her for 3 years. I have hundreds of photos of the build process. I started with a very solid Falcon 500 with a 250 six and ...auto. I still have the original (rebuilt years ago) MATCHING NUMBERS engine and auto box included in sale in VGC. There is also a heap of parts for the car, including bucket seats, auto steering column, auto pedal box, badges, etc.(but if shipping car be aware most companies wont move parts in the car) It still runs a bench seat as the Toyota box sits more forward than the Ford box, but you can put the buckets in if want as I have a set included in sale. The Toyota box also has great gear ratios and she does not need a 5th gear as only sits on 2200RPM @ 100klm/hr.
The paint is new and has barely seen the outdoors. It is vivid yellow but close to the old surfer orange of the 70s Fords. The paint presents well but is not a show car $20k job. I did it myself spending months on it and overall looks great for a street car, but there are very tiny imperfections (most would buff out as just bug/dust that got in the upper layers of 2 pac clear. It has about 4-5 coats of clear, but many people cant even see them, I am just picky). It has new carpet and rest of trim is still good, except the front seat has rips and was the next thing on list to get done and the dash has a few cracks. It was next on list to do but seems I have both bench and bucket seats, Ill leave the decision on which ones to re-cover up to new owner (Its approx $700-900 to get it done). The car was very solid with none of the usual rust problems on XBs (photos of it in original condition included). It was a Toowoomba car and it shows, with solid floors, sills, etc. No rust in car. and pics to prove it (will send disc of hundreds of photos to new owner with car, showing build) Engine is fully built and barely run in. I just had the triple carbies rebuilt (over $1200) and tuned (I can include the carb balancer tool). And no they are not hard to maintain once set properly, in fact many people rate them as the best carby next to EFI and quite fuel efficient. I took the head to Gary at REPOWER in Toowoomba. He advised it was likely a 200 head as it had smaller combustion chambers. He also added he had heard of them but never seen one before. So the rarity of this engine just encouraged me to go all out. The head also appeared to have had some porting in past, so it was tested and fully rebuilt with all new valve guides, oversized valves (2mm) and CROW springs, retainers etc. We also machined and rebuilt the bottom end with a nice lumpy crow cam and all new parts throughout. I assembled the engine myself with help from my mechanic and its mated to an old steel case Toyota 4 speed gearbox (Corona bulletproof box) with bellhousing to suit the pre-crossflow six, and a heavy duty clutch. These pre-emissions engines were rated at 170HP in 1970s, and this engine has plenty of performance parts to exceed that by a lot.
Engine specs as follows; Ford Falcon 250 4.1L six. Started off with a very straight, standard bore block from a wagon. Block decked, cleaned, crack tested, bored 30 thou, new Brass welch plugs, all new gaskets/seals. Modified 200 head. Log removed and brass brazed flange to suit intake. Crack tested, cleaned, new oversized valves (1.476 exhaust, 2mm O/S), new valve guides, seals, crow springs, retainers, mild porting. Crank and rods cleaned/linished and checked. Very strong and well balanced engines, renowned for longevity, with 7 bolt mains. New dished pistons from XF to keep compression safe (due to smaller head chambers of 200 head) final compression ratio of 9.5:1(the head came off a 200 engine and has slightly smaller chambers than the 250 and CR would be too high, so used dished pistons to lower CR). See CLASSIC INLINES website and you will see this engine has all the best parts, specs and sizes for safe power. Runs on 98 RON fuel, but could run on 95. New Hastings rings New bearings New lifters New Crow Cam (specs 223@ 0.050) (nice lump at idle but very smooth street cam) Rebuilt Triple 1 inch Su carburettors LOG HEAD Ford Lynx intake manifold (VERY RARE) New Extractors New 2 inch exhaust system New high volume JP Performance oil pump New GMB water pump New Rollmaster double row timing chain New electronic distributor/coil/plugs and leads New thermostat and housing and all hoses New gauges/senders New Powerbond performance balancer and new fan belt Heavy duty clutch Custom belhousing to suit Toyota 4 speed and hydraulic clutch Custom tailshaft with new yolk and unis (shortened and balanced XF, $450) Converted to cable style throttle for carbies with custom mounting plate. All brakes done, less than 2000klms since overhaul. New diff oil/seal. 15x7 Mags with near new 245 rear and 215 front tyres New battery New electric fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator New electric fan and an adjustable electronic temp controller
The car is awesome to drive and sounds like a V8. These engines were renowned for outperforming V8s of the era and have heaps of torque. (just look up Ford 2V 250 six, I have some videos on youtube under Jason Lenz). This engine is even rarer than a 2V and even online I have only seen 3 more, with this one having the most work. I have heaps of receipts and hundreds of photos of entire build. The motor alone was over $6k in parts/machining, not including initial purchase price or assembly. The car is not 100% perfectly finished yet, but all hard stuff done, with just some very minor finishing touches required. I have a new set of windscreen chrome ordered and will go with car. It still has room to improve suspension etc if required. There are still some small touches that can be added to finish her off to new owners taste, but 95% of the work is done. It is on club rego but due to rip in seat may not pass RWC until covered or fixed. However car is definitely in RWC mechanically as it has barely been driven since I had one done. Its a 74 pre-emissions car, so all legal. These cars are getting really hard to find in this condition and if you dont like attention then dont buy it, as I get waved at constantly in this girl, as she stands out and sounds tough. It has NEVER been revved high and the highest I took it was 4500rpm as engine still fresh. It has had run in oil changed, has very good oil pressure, temps are good and runs very smoothly. I can almost guarantee that you will never see another XB at a car show with this motor set up. So if you want to stand out and with prices on the rise, this is a good opportunity. The number of hours I have spent on this car is immeasurable as its been my hobby for 3 years, but needless to say if you had to pay someone to get the car to this level it would cost tens of thousands in labour.
I have taken it for a few tuning runs. A standard XB GT 351 does it in 8.1 seconds, my last run hit 0-100 in 6.9 seconds and high 14 mile, better than a GT! I am sure with some launch practise, better diff, suspension etc it would get even lower; however I built it as a cruiser and times not my main concern. I see a lot of rough XBS asking big dollars now. I think for the rarity and quality of car it is great value and I can supply 100s of images of the build. Please view in person as the car still needs some touches as all old cars do. I think she is better than many but not top show car stuff. The car is in an upcoming issue of Australian Street Car magazine as a feature car. So here is chance to get a unique, magazine featured XB. receipts for work/parts. Some pics from over the build process. if serious call to inspect XXXX-XXX-XXX
