Although the internals of the engine are standard Toyota (in fact made by Yamaha), Lotus fits different intake and exhaust systems and, significantly, has devised its own engine control electronics. The result is 190 horsepower (10 up on the Celica) at 7800 rpm and 133 pound-feet of torque at 6800 rpm.
We have our reservations about this engine and transmission in the Celica as it is difficult to keep the engine on the high-rpm cams as you accelerate through the gears. The performance is more accessible in the lightweight (875 Kg) Elise, due in part to Lotus's improvements to the electronics and gearshift. And for those accustomed to the Rover-engined Elise, the Toyota-powered car is noticeably quicker even before the cam phase change at 6200 rpm.

....Then there is the black/carbon race spec one they made for customer in Asia (racing). V6 engine making more power than HSV (300hp or something) and a better power to weight ratio than a Ferrari Enzo (Yum)

i hate the design of the gear!

i think it was only the s1 exige that has the window winders, the s2 are trying to 'compete' with boxsters (hmmm, chalk and cheese) so are now, much more user friendly!! had a go in a 300bhp vtec conversion at croft - damn!! but lotus did recently release 50 black or yellow exige 240R's with a supercharger which was described as one of the best car sensations ever!!
lotus circuit car is next project. damn we miss out in oz

Looks nice but not a fan of the engine, they are quick in corners and so fourth but otherwise, there are way more cars that would be quicker for less. Did any one here about the Exige that Lotus Made for some customer a one off GT one. They turfed the 1.8 four pot, and dropped in a 3.0 V6. It put out something like 298kw with 399Nm. Now that is a fast car.

power to weight ratios are the way forward - nothing better than killing a big car in something small - best fun i had was a 1380 cc turbo old skool mini putting out 125bhp at the wheels dry weight 625 kg would nail a fiat uno ie turbo no worrys !

mrhatmostly now owns an S1 Exige (1.8L Rover engine). It is very minimalist to say the least, but that is part of the charm. Finding the door handles and grab holds are a challenge in itself. To pull the door closed from inside the cabin you just grab up under the metal panel that seperates the tiny bit of cloth on the door. Window winders are present, and the dash is very basic. Leg room for the passenger is interesting due to the curve in the chassis rails, I felt like I was sitting on Mrhats lap! Gorgeous car though, just insane.
