hey everyone, help needed in deciding on some audio gear!!!
i went into northfield the other day and was looking at some alpine stuff got a quote for three grand for the following:
1. 1 x type R 12" subwoofer in box
2. 6x9" alpine speakers installed on parcel shelf
3. 6" splits in the front costom install
4. alpine head unit = $450
5. alpine amp 1000 WATT
all of the above in a custom install in the car for $3000
is it a good deal or should i visit a different place...someone give me some ideas as to what i should do...

as i have no idea.

thanks DaLeZ

Hi,
Sounds OK, Alpine gear is definately top notch stuff and if you have the money to spend for quality, than sure, go with Alpine as opposed to the cheaper brands.
But as a general rule of thumb, you should always get quotes from more than one supplier

... but that's difficult since only Northfield seems to stock Alpine gear in briz huh? :-)

Have you bargained em down? NEVER pay asking price for audio gear. A friend of mine got 2 type r's boxed and a 1100 wat amp for a lot less.

dont buy it cos "alpine is fully sic"
demo differnt brands and buy what sounds good, not what gets u the most street credit

agreed !!!! as such some people will certainly dissagree with "alpine is fully sic"me for one. I think alpine is very overrated and overpriced for the amount of features their gear has .. that said , if you triple your budget and stay alpine you get some top notch gear. Alpine seem to of gone the route , that unless you have gobs of money to spend they are really not interested in suppling people with gear. Why do they only deal through certain retail outlets? i would think if it was that good , that it would be available anywhere. It really is a case of each to their own here.

ok yer i know what you mean but i have demo'd alpine and eclipse but eclipse is just to expensive for me ive also done macintosh but that is way to expensive so alpine has great quality sound and i think will do the job just right but still need more info on it if anyone has got any

Alpine is good.
They probably make the best cd/mp3 tuners.
And thier amps & speakers are usually good for the price you pay.

i just did a rough estimation of what prices you SHOULD be getting that stuff for, especially as you are buying a whole lot at once, and it shouldnt be over $2000. and i dont think they will be doing $1000 worth of installation! Try doing at least most of the install yourself (laying wires through car) and you will save quite a bit.
I've seen my mate pay northfield nundah $200 for custom front speakers installed and an amp installed under passenger seat, and i could of done a way better job. I was surprised, it was nearly as dodgy as bris car sound!

i would ditch the rear 6x9's and either spend more on the splits or more on the head unit.
rear fill will only detract from the front stage!!

$1000 worth of install isn't difficult, you got cables, interconnects(ring terminals, battery terminals, fuses, fuse holder, distro blocks etc)
consider that Northfield Moorooka mainly stock stinger and fusion
wiring and accessories.
maybe some sound deadener
he stated he was getting a custom install.....may involve a bit of glassing = time consuming........
Plus Northfield Moorooka are known for quality installs.......the day I need a custom install, i know where I'll be going..........

Yeh sounds about right to me for that gear, is it last years alpine gear or this years brand new stuff? If its last years, you could probably talk em down a bit more as they'll be wanting to get rid of it all to make more room for the latest gear...

Jun 7 2005, 08:58 AM
i believe it is last years gear aye...but yer i think i have found my solution thatnks for all your help guys/gals...but yer everyone except the minor exception thinks that alpine is good shit so ill go with it i think...so yer thanks again

go to "gold coast car sound" in moss street brisbane, he does great deals and their finished installations are fantastic, thats the only place i have ever gone to with my cars, ive bought tv's, dvd players, subs, amps, speakers etc from there and ive just bought a alpine type r 12" and mono block from there, being installed in a couple weeks. speak to george

There over priced in my opinion...dont get me wrong they sound fantastic. Your paying for the name ALPINE and thats it....there are units out there that do the same thing with out the BLING!! BLING!!
Mix your brands the best sounding cars have the best from every area of sound quality....ie Alpine h/u, focal splits, kicker subs, phonix gold amps...think about mixing you brands it works better 90% of the time in my opinion!!

no question ////ALPINE is the way to go
i have all alpine gear and never had a problem with it. sure it costs a bit more but im a big believer in the old 'you get what you pay for' line.
and i would agree about the comment of spending a lil more on a headunit insted of 6x9s. i upgraded to the alpine touch screen dvd and the quality is definately noticable
good luck

mmm, for those that think Alpine is over-priced, perhaps their speakers, but as far as their head units go, the actual features you get are hard to match.
I have the IVA-D300E, and the MP3 navigation compared to others is bloody awesome, the only downside is that it takes a little while to scan a cd for the first time and scroll throught he lists, but it actually gives a list of folders on the screen, and you can navigate the folders etc, UNLIKE your cheap JVC's, and the Pioneers', etc etc..
Then you have the bass focus, millisecond delays to each channel to focus the sound more central to the car from the drivers point of view, etc etc etc..
God damned I could go on forever, Alpine gives the features that people that demand quality are looking for - and since they supply quality gear, they wouldn't sell in an ordinary retail outlet such as Autobarn because the 'average joe' goes to Autobarn for 'average' gear - who wouldn't know how to use nor care for the feature or sound quality benefits.
I agree that you shouldn't buy Alpine if you just want to own the brand, you should purchase with a good reason. Anyone that's owned an Alpine head unit is unlikely to ever purchase another brand in future, it truly does leave an impression.

Nah what mcleod is abosutly correct... alpine dont want their products being sold by average places because that results in average results... they sell in speciality outlets because they r a specialty product...
One main adavntage of getting all one line of components (e.g. x-type speakers and subs) is that they have the same audio charistics engineered into them throught the whole range which makes it easier to a desired sound... if u mix and match (my last SQ system had JL, Hertz, Alpine, Phoenix Gold) you MAY get a better result but the setup is a lot harder and costs lots more in both money and time...
my next "budget" SQ system will comprise Alpine amps and x-type speakers.. bit exy but worth it... those x-type 6.5" splits shit on anything this side of dynaudio...

Well... I thought I agreed on the Alpine Front.
Their speakers suck!!!. Would prefer Focalpoint. But I do like their amps, Head decks.
Not a big fan of their subs.

In what ive seen alpine gear is good shit for what you pay,
I bought my 2 alpine type S subs and alpine monoblock amp from gold coast car sound and he did me a nice tidy deal for 2 subs in a box, with a few metres of speaker wire for free aswell as knocking off some dollars on the amp too.
Havent had any personal experience with apline headunits, but from what ive seen and heard from mates, they are awesome
But as stated, get various quptes, GCCS also sell some other good quality gear and its still fairy cheap, you just gotta hunt around

I went to a place here in melb to get a quote for a new system for my car. I was looking at alpine all round. Yeah i bought the alpine headunit and i can not say how happy i am with it.
I do agree that sometimes mixing and matching is the way to go but the only thing that i got quoted for that wasnt alpine were the 5" and 4" speakers. they were focals.
I think you got quoted a good price. I got 4.5k for the 5", 4" speakers. 2 type r subs in custom built box and 2 alpine amps. all this custom installed and that was around 1.5K under retail price so i was not complaining about that.
I would go alpine anyday in headunits but there are other speakers that may sound better but the for the price they are they are well worth it.

Alpine has a large store down in browns plains. go check that out they have some good prices.

You can't go wrong with all Alpine gear. but you could do better to mix it up. No one company can make the best of a range of products.
Think about it this way.......
Eagle Boys make the best BBQ Meat lovers pizza, but nothing compares to Pizza Hut Supreme. If you wanted the best two pizzas, you would drive to each and buy them. You will get the best pizzas, but is not convenient. But both of these are better to Dominos, but it is still a pizza, and you can't complain when you are hungry.
Everyone get that or do you want another analogy?
Alpine electronics are top notch (value for money). But this can't exactly be said about their speakers (still good though). While they work fine, and better to many others you would get a better end result mixing some brands. Fortunately for you the one shop carries more than the one pizza. You can buy your Alpine meat lovers and your Boston Supreme at the one shop without going anywhere near the Pioneer stuff.
**Diclaimer - Pizza choices are my personal opinion. Others may have different opinions to pizza choices. Car audio stuff is spot on, and I make no apologies for this comment**

I got a CDA9831 headunit and it is really good, the Apline website also has a good personalisation section which makes it easy as hell to set time correction and such. I got a headunit, splits, amp and sub from Northfield for $1700 a while back which included all wiring etc. Unfortnately they bundled a "speaker/mid range" amp with the package and not a 2ch or similar (which is only $100 more expensive than the amp I got!) so I am a bit disappointed with the amount of bass at the moment, but that is only due to the amp not being suited to the sub. Otherwise the speakers are pretty good (got type Rs) and I picked up some 2nd hand type E coaxials for the rear fill off a friend for cheap.
