since we're bagging him out... ive been in a gtr with DW, not a fantastic driver either

Should of seen his effort at Tassienats weekend in the burnout comp! Who enters a burnout comp with space savers on? AND DRIFTS?

I'm not sure if that could be remotely classified as drift... I'd put it closer to uncontrollible hill billy driving!

As my car was imported straight from japan, would it be tuned for 95 or 98 octane fuel???
ottoS13
Jul 12 2006, 09:53 AM
japan has 100ron, i doubt they'd tune it for 95
ronald_r32
Jul 12 2006, 09:54 AM
so if i still have the car by the 21st and put 98 in it i will notice a fairly large difference?
ottoS13
Jul 12 2006, 09:58 AM
i reckon so unless the car has had tuning for 95
Nyssa
Jul 12 2006, 11:39 AM
You would be safer to retune your car to suit the 98 rather than guess and chance it IMO.
ronald_r32
Jul 12 2006, 11:59 AM
surely running a higher octane fuel wont damage it???
Nyssa
Jul 12 2006, 12:18 PM
Maybe i should of worded that better, i was more talking a retune would gain a better effect on having the 98. Would have a much better outcome than just starting to pump 98. IF and its a big IF we finally get 98 i will use it after getting my car tuned to suit.
ottoS13
Jul 12 2006, 01:06 PM
no its not a big IF. its now confirmed for 21st unless it gets delayed, they're already setting up the servo's.
and of course a tune would help, but 98 is in the end better for your car. wrx's are meant to be on 98ron anyway arent they

running 98octane in ur car ben will make a big difference, factory from japan they are tuned to run 100octance like otto said. it wont be so much of a power gain, but overall it'll run alot smoother.

Jul 12 2006, 07:32 PM
Cant wait, anything to get a little more power and make things smoother

Umm so you think the car is still gunna be tuned for the 100?? Hello how old is this skyline? Surely by now the car would have basically retuned itself to suit premium

yep the ECU just sprouted arms and legs, walked off to a rom writer and retuned itself....good on ya!
newer cars such as ur WRX, EVO's, Sri Astras etc with the amount of electrical system they hav might be able to adjust there tune to whatever fuel, but a 1989/1990 import isnt capable of that kind of thing!

My car is a 1991 model and its ECU is Self Adapting, but yeh, people get confused by all this self adapting ecu stuff. Only certain aspects adapt and it usually pretty easy to quickly overide the settings that the car has 'learned'. Usually unplug battery for a while and the ECU's reset, or sometimes jumping a fuse can do it. For those less inclined to do that, sometimes taking the car to the highway and planting in a high gear can force the ECU's to adapt to a more BOOST happy setting. But yeh, how common this is I dunno.

I back this up, even the old 9000 saabs had an overboost function, whereby the ECU senses that the car is on an uphill section of road, and briefly (30sec or so) allows the car to boost past its normal maximum, which I think on the 9000's was 13psi, so basically, on a hill it would briefly hit 15-16psi

Yep

thats it. But to add to the equation Saabs use a knock sensor to try and tell the ECU's to lower the boost before it gets a chance to hit Overboost/Fuelcut, its mostly to do with Saabs patented APC system, which also makes installation of a MBC a tad bit confusing, but easy one u know how. Or just buy aftermarket ECU's and keep it all electronic and have Fuelcutt at 26-28psi.
Well that was all kinda irrelevent considering 99.9999% of u dont drive Saabs.

Great cars, bulletproof engines, nice interiors etc, but the company will never ever be able to rid itself of the 'grandpa' tag.
I drove a 9000 turbo for a while, never had a single problem, ever. Was good on fuel, had a shitload of power for a 2L once you got past the lag, cause they do have large turbo's, handled very well, only downside were the rattles and small electronic faults on the inside
