Why are all BMW engines slanted. Maybe the mechanics like replacing piston rings.

I dont see your point? Slant engines aren't any worse or better for wearing rings than any other sort of motor. Valiant Slant 6's... V8's... even V6's?
The angle the piston goes up is different than a straight 6, but its not moving about in the cylinder or anything.
Please explain.

I prefer the non-CSL version, should be quicker than the CSL in the hands of an experienced driver even though it has less power.

How can the M3 be quicker than the CSL in the hands of an "experienced" driver?

The entire engine is slanted for it's install, it is a straight 6. The reason why is to due with balance and keeping the weight centered over the middle of the engine bay. They pretty much do it for all their inline engines.

yeh im wondering that too
I remember downloading a video comparing an M3 and a CSL around a race track. CSL had quicker times, but thats expected, more power, less weight

The pinnacle of german engineering. I was fortunate enough to have a ride in one of these bad boys in one of the only ones on the coast. Great ballance, well built and aparently just mind blowing on the track. Look like a spaceship too.
Good car first up!

Yeah Id love to hear the answer to thisone aswell... Considering the CSL is not just an upgrade in driving aids, it is faster in all areas to a standard M3

You didnt answer my question at all. The question was, why would a slant motor be worse wearing on the piston rings as the previous guy stated.

I agree...CSL is highly striped down version and has lost alot of the luxury items such as electric seats and tv etc.
Dad's got a standard M3 and is very nice....although can't wait for the new M5....5.0lt V10!!!

No I beleive the CSL is still a quicker car, although you would really need to push it on a track to notice the difference.

The engines are slanted to fit under the hood as they will not fit straight without a big bonnet buldge. To keep the low sleek lines BMW simply slanted the motor, they have been doing it for years.

No but if you whack in the new S85 V10 tune it for over 400Kw's u can kiss your bullshit V8's goodbye, or alternatively you can supercharged your M3 with a measly 6psi of boost for an output of 380kw's and 490NM.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VwWXdFP6ZAApparently there are 3 known supercharged CSL's in existence, 1 in the UK, 1 in the states and this one in the video from Sweeden
