I have heard that a 253 and a 308 have the same block except for the cranksaft and rods. so can the 308 internals be put into a 253 to make it the same capacity as a 308.
TwinCam16
i could be wrong but i think they have a bigger bore too
04ETA
I think TwinCam16 is right about the bigger bore size
sik_EBIIghia
twin cam16 and hoon_01 are 100% correct same crank and rods but a 308 has a bigger bore than a 253

to make a 253 a 308 u need to bore it out and put bigger pistons into it so the answer to your question is no
kroosn
Ok thanks for the help. At least it can still be done.
kroosn
that way i can bore the 253 change the rods, crank and pistons change the heads to VN efi ones and pretty much ive got a VN V8 but technically (for legal reasons) its a 253. I am very happy now. ha a loop hole in the system.
TwinCam16
until you have a massive acco, they sieze your car, strip the motor, see the mods then void your insurance...
FIDDY
dont waste ur money man, jus go and get a 308 much easier and less work!
WoodStok
i agree. 308 is the way to go.
kroosn
This is to go in the 280zx. so the less power the engine has when it goes in the easier it is to get complianced. with the 253 the engine doesnt have to have engineering aproval where as a 308 does. the 253 actually has less power than the standard L28 out of the zed so there is no need to provide engineering compliance. yet once the motor is in i can do what ever i want to it and hence do the above mods. as for insurance at the moment its only insured for fire and theft.
FIDDY
dude a red 308 stock only has like 115kw n e way!
kroosn
And a 280z has 105 or something like that. and a 253 is 90 something. plus i would have ended up stroking and boreing the engine anyhow so its not a problem as in time and money.
FIDDY
hahaha them 253's are raw power, lmfao thats so sad!
kroosn
Thats why im pondering the idea of twin turboeing it. im a mechanical engineering student so it would make a good project.
Hoon
I used to have a 253 with....wait for it.....corvette heads graphed on. Don't ask my how or why or even who did it, I bought it like that. Fucker made a massive piston slapping noise under full tilt, and it beat a VLT one night. Dunno if it was stock or whatever...crazy.

If ya wanna save some fuel, go the 253, it's lots of fun with a m4 tranny.

and 115 kw from the 308 is good? tongue.gif

hehehee.... burnt.
TBird
not to mention how heavy (i'm guessing here) the 253 would be compared to the 308.. and how it would turn it into an understeering pig.

Luke.

Nar its not but i dont think its that bad for a engine built in the 70's
sik_EBIIghia
yeah even for a motor built in the 70's its pathetic a mk 1 capri 3l v6 has more power than a 253, and a ford 302 had 140kw's

i doubt anyone will pull apart your block and measure the capacity they will just look at the 253 stamped on the side of the block if they even go that far, its a bit of work but if you wanna get away with it its the best idea, if it were me i'd be putting a different engine into it

if u are set on putting into it go a v8 go a 289 windsor u can stroke it out to 347 and u can put some decent heads on it and have it efi no probs (think 2002 TE50 heads rods crank and injection)

i reckon a 280z needs a nissan motor tho i'm not a big fan of nissan motors in holdens (vl excluded) and vice versa

nissan motor's are very cheap and disposable these days
lexus4camv8
buy a toyota cresida half cut with the 4l quadcamv8

the cut will set u back 2200 and id have it in the car and registered 4 less than u will make ur motor into a efi308 and it will shit all over the 308
sik_EBIIghia
the quad cam v8 won't have as much torque as the 308 tho
the red krawler
Hmm lets see.

You take a standard HQ.

You remove the heads, manifold and cam, replace heads with VN item, replace manifold with Harrop item and replace cam with VN cam.

Then you start the car again and watch the 12 second quarters appear out of nowhere.

Not bad for a pushrod. Not bad for fuck-all dollars worth of work.

(it should be noted that in the interests of reliability you will need a much bigger radiator and water pump, a big fuck off carby (750 4 barrel holley is a good start) etc)

i like wot i hear mate, only sensible thing ive herd u say in ages, lol JK dude, tongue.gif and mate u dont need a bigger waterpump and radaitor! std would be fine!
the red krawler
From the ones I've seen that have done that exact conversion, the first thing to go was the radiator after they got sick of overheating in anything less fast paced than freeway traffic
silver_ice
ahh good to see you remember something of your v8 days krawley - come back to us! tongue.gif

yeah it should be good when its finished and once i pay off the $5000 spray painters bill. i know it probably should have a nissan motor but its something different. i have had two holdens with nissan motors so its time i got a nissan with a holden motor. the engine has done 11,000k's so its in excellent condition, does anyone know how good the 4 speed manuals are for the V8's, i did get a quote to convert it to supra 5-speed for $1300. but its still money. and does anyone know what a set of rods, pistons and a crankshaft for a 308 would be worth.
Enema
Do you have new pics since it's been sprayed?

5k is a lot of cash... was there a lot of rust/straightening to be done?
kroosn
no sorry i dont have any pic's yet but ill put them up when i get some. the car was almost all rust about 10% metal, oh and 70%bog, 5% alfoil (god knows why) and 15% rust. the car will still be about 4 to 6 months off completion because i have to save up to have all the interior re done. before krawler mention putting VN heads on and another manifold what sort of power would a 308 make with that.
FIDDY
KRAWLER i guess wif a old hq yea u wold change the radiotor! sorry!
