Hey guys, looking at getting 2 ATI HD5750's. My motherboard is a P55-UD3P. I only just noticed it had 1 PCIE x16 and 1 PCIE x4 (apart from the 4 PCI slots and PCIE x1). Can i run one of the cards in the PCIE x4 slot? Ill be using cross fire if that helps..
What are my other options if not able to be done? You may see it as over kill, but i have some plans and reasons for the need of lots of screens

well, if you want to run crossfire, you dont really have much of an option. you "can" run it in that configuration, but you'd get a better performance increase from a single higher end card than running in that config.
so, imo, either wait for the 5890 or, replace board, and get two 4890's (or 5890's if you have that much cash to burn)

Multiple screens mainly, im the type that likes to excessively multitask and like a separate screen for each, IE: lately its been, WMP with music videos, msn, video editing, firefox pages, and other bits and pieces..

so.... you skimped on the board when you shouldnt have... and now you want to splurge on components that will have their performance hindered by your poor choice of board...

your 1st mistake was going i5. your second mistake was going with the UD3P. your 3rd mistake, is that now you realise you didnt plan correcly for future upgrades.

explain whats wrong with I5 then... im not a AMD fan. Thats my old man that likes AMD, considering the I5 750 is just as good as the I7 860... i cant see a problem here. just a few miss calculations will the build i want.

You're going to crossfire two 5850's to use browse the internet?
How many screens and what resolution are we talking.

No not just browsing internet.. lol, im not that lame i need that sort of penis extension lol. im thinking 3 - 4 to cover things like WMP playing my music vids, one for vid editing, 1 with msn + other random shit, and if im currently building a site one for that. But as for the resolution, ill be using max settings. as ill be buying all new monitors after i get the card/s
I may just have to go one card and bite my tongue for not researching everything before purchasing.

there isnt much "wrong" with the i5. just your options open up with regards to features if you went AMD or i7. i5 is like the nerd kid in the corner. does his work, but nobody cares about him, so he doesnt get the party invites.

but you can do that with 4350's.......
unless you will be gaming at high resolutions, you'll be wasting your money.

So just because its a I5 no body cards that its pretty much or even is the same specs as the I7 because its not as new? Its a $200 price difference between the 2 and they do the same job, im not speaking from experience, but what iv been told and read.
Thats how im interpreting what you said.

i5 and i7 were released at pretty much the same time. dont get me wrong, i5 is still a good platform, its just that AMD offers better value for the same price, and i7 offers more features (at a cost).

I do agree with you there. But as iv always had Intel my whole life, bar the 2 AMD sets ups (that constantly gave me problems for some reason) thats about it, mind you iv fried all previous computers duel to overclocking, overloading and bashing them because their slow XD

Dude, the i5's are pretty damn good for there money.
If he is going to crossfire some 5850's for browsing the internet, he should be able to squeeze out a bit more for an i5.
If this is the route you want to go, you're going to need a motherboard running with TWO x16 PCIe slots.
If you read, a lot of them say that they'll run one in x16 or two in x8, this is not what you want.

yeah, i didnt say they were bad. i personally wouldnt go i5 over AM3. but i would go i7 over AM3.
not so easy to get a board with dual pcie16
Asus rampage jumps to mind, but its an i7 board.
even the P755D only supports sngle 16x, or dual 8x.

The GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT-UD3H is a good AMD board for dual PCIe x16, relatively cheap too.
Its a bit harder to find cheaper Intel Mobos with dual PCIe x16, the only way you can do that is with LGA775 and you'd be crazy to go with such a socket right now.

Ummm, I'm out of date with SLI/Crossfire but I thought that once you put that link in, you can't run the cards independently.
Isn't the whole point of SLI/Crossfire to bridge the GPU's and VRAM together? Wasn't that also made redundant with 2 GPU's on one board?

The new ATI cards run Eyefinity software that lets you run like 6 monitors for a crossfire config.
