Full Version: Running A 95 Model Engine In An 85 Model Car

The car in question is an E30 BMW 318, 1985.
The E30s came out with an option of 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0L 4cyl or 2.3 or 2.7L 6cyl.
.
Mine has the M10 1.8L. Im looking to run an M30 3.5L 6cyl from a 1995 E34 535i.
To make it fit, all that needs to really be done mechanically is a pair of E12 engine mounts, E28 radiator, shortened driveshaft with the flange adapted to suit, and a thermo fan instead of engine fan. Id be fitting it the same way Alpina and Hartge fitted big 6's to 3 series cars. Then its just wiring, induction and exhaust.
.
As far as exhaust goes, do i follow 1985 ADR? ie no catalytic converter? Or do i need to update it due to the engine?
What other emission gear do i need to keep?
My E30, being a 318, came with solid front discs, and drums at the rear. I will be upgrading these to vented front discs and solid rear discs off an E30 325. Will this be sufficient as far as satisfying an engineer is concerned?
.
What else do i need to take into account?
The engine will be sat far back in the engine bay to maintain weight distribution, and is being fitted with all off the shelf BMW parts, including the full E34 induction.
.
Thanks guys
