I have bought a 1973 Toyota celica ta22 Lt, all original, gold, ec interior, reco'd 2t 1.6 lt, for my first car.
Now i want to get rid of the original hubs and put some nice rims on them, i like the simmon b45's in black, but open to other considerations
wanted it lowered (not get the springs cut), but dont know what are the best, and get rid of the hideous steering wheel, put on a nice woodgrain one on, eventually i want to get rid of the 2t and put either a 1jz or a 1uz in it, how much work needs to be done to squeeze them in. Or should i just leave it all original? Any thoughts?

Then smash a slab of VB, go home and punch the last 2 teeth out of your wifes head.

TA22's can't legally have a 2.5T or a 4L na in them. try something smaller like a 1ggte. otherwise go a RA23 or RA28, which were a little longer in the nose, hence heavier, so WERE infact able to have both those engine conversions done legally.

NOW. Wheel choice is AWESOME. don't let anyone change your mind. make sure you get some nice wide tyres and roll your guards too. The TA/RA celica's werent the best handling cars ever made, so there is no real sense in trying to make it.... the... best handling car ever made... kind of wrote myself into a corner there. lol.

Any way, take the car to your nearest pedders, quickfit, bobjane or whatever and just get the car lowered with shocks to suit.

Woodgrain steering wheels look tacky, go for a good looking black sports wheel and boss kit. OR if you feel like blowing some money, try to find an original GT wheel from the same era celica's.

Enjoy your silly car!

+1 for wheel choice. I run a set of Simmons V5's on my old bmw and everyone loves em.
If i were you id just start by just putting in a set of lowered/super low king or pedders springs, with shortened sports shocks to suit. I dont see a point in spending HUGE money under there because its still going to be 35 year old technology holding it all together. But do that, and upgrade your swaybars and replace any worn suspension bushes with Superpro items, and you will be driving a COMPLETELY different beast. On a car like that id also be checking brake rotors and pads, and drum shoes at the rear, and completely flushing throught the brake fluid and replacing it with decent dot 4 fluid too.
I guess that realistically your first step is going to be to go over the WHOLE undercarriage with a fine tooth comb, and replace anything necessary, but with better items than standard. thats where your most noticeable gains will be had.

Thanks heaps for the info guys, i was very determined to get a ra23 or ra28 for the engine conversions, but with the ta22 a 1ggte would go nicely,
alpine_bass
hahah or my turbo rotary full conversion for ta22 i have for sale lol. goes hard as on 5psi no traction till 100kmph just by putting your foot down no clutch involved
lil_bobby_260
haha do that ^^^^

You say its your 1st car, are u on the new P plate laws? coz you cant do engine conversions if you are. Well legally anyways ahha
Also love Ta22's and Ra28's almost bought a Ta as my 1st car aswell but the guy selling wouldnt answer his phone :S
I think the guys above are right and your best off doing brakes and suspention first make sure its all up to scratch, When i first got my XC project i was so set on doing engine mods stright away but asked and everyone said leave that til last and im glad they did because theres no use having the power if the rest of your car cant handle it.
and +2 on rim choice
and you got any pics?

2TG FTW, it's legal too, as the RTA classes it as a change of engine number not a conversion
Hmm, that makes a 3SGE in my SA63 notchback legal. Cool!

Im only on my L's, haha but was very determined to learn how to drive in one of these, if the 2tg conversion is legal, im defenitly going with the 2tg, i can put pictures up,but i lost the camera cord mamoru.gif but its still on carsales http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/privat...2&silo=1011 , i will get the bushes, springs and the other stuff before i put a new engine in. i want to get the white gt indicators but i cant find any, if any1 knows could u tell me. my dad says first thing car alarm and a celica 5spd gearbox. The colour is beautiful, i could use vomit for touch-up paint mamoru.gif ,
Thanks for all ur advice
HOTSHOT
Looks good, i had a ta22 for my first car. As its been said lower it and replace all the bushes.

Engine wise throw in a 2tg its a very easy swap, would budget 1500 with the 5 speed. that is if your doing all the work your self.

wheel choice is great, just do tasteful mods. lower, tint, wheels and exaust. Just enjoy driveing it. later on when you know the car and driving skills are better look at brake upgrade, sway bars/strut brace and lsd.

Looks clean, I'd be ditching the auto for a T50 5 speed ASAP though. It'll bolt to the 2T and it'll make the car 100% more fun to drive. A manual T-18 Corolla is your best bet to find one, anything else and you'll have to find a bellhousing to suit the T series engine
Check out www.toymods.net, you'll get a shit ton more useful info there than you will on here. No offense to the few actually useful people on here
ctrain7
thats exactly what im doing, putting a 5spd in, car alarm, lowered but not too low, and the nice mags, the get the car prepped for a 2tg
thanks, btw do ta22's come with power steering if so how much do the power steering cost.
