looking to upgrade from a compact digital camera to a SLR, wondering what brands/models i should be looking at.

need somthing that can take great action shots like drifts/4wding, also some nature/landscape shots.

also for work it needs to take interior pics of houses. so wide angle shots.

is there a camera that would be a good fit?

budget is like $1500

Yep the entry level canons are a great place to start from

I have started with a 350D twin lens kit and plan to build on my glass and then buy a more pro body down the track

Nikon have some pretty competitve gear out too and should not be overlookd

Personally, go a xx0D camera ie (400D or 450D) until you get used to what everything is then start working your way up. Best bet is ebay I think that way you can see what everything is going for, and work from there. Otherwise if you go to a shop, you could end up spending $2k+ buy the time you buy cards and bags etc.

Go Here : http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/store/...p?idProduct=946

And buy that lens for $1500

Go to EBay and buy a 2nd hand Canon 300D ( should cost less than $1 a 'D' lol )

I know it is all a tad more than $1500... but you won't regret it.

The lens is the important bit smile.gif

I dont know about starting with the heaviest standard zoom that canon offers would be a good way to get into photography

The main requirements you have from your camera - actions shots, nature/landscape shots and wide angle shots are more to do with lens than the camera body. The camera body itself will just impact your image quality and very minor impact on action shots.

For action shots in drifts and 4wding, you need a fast lens with large focal length, i.e. a lens with a large aperture as it will enable you to shoot with faster shutter speeds in lower light situations. You will also need a body with a decent FPS rate to be able to capture as many shots in a sequence as fast as possible.

For a wide angle shots, you need a wide angle lens. Simple as that really. There are a few on the market - canon 10-22, sigma 10-20, tamron 10-24 and tokina 11-18.

The main advice I give to anyone asking about buying a DSLR is get a cheap body and decent lens. Typically you should go for a 70-30 split on lens camera cost. You can always upgrade your body at a later date and carry on using the same lens.

I would definitely look into the 40D with the Tamron 17-50mm lens that Total Monkey Kaos is selling. Its both a great body and great lens.

Edit - I dont know Total Monkey Kaos so Im not trying to endorse his sale in anyway.
