Hey guys this is probably a simple fix but im not a car mechanic type guy so i wouldnt know where the first place to start,
but i got a 99 toyota camry automatic 4cyl sedan and have noticed in the last 3-4 weeks that the car door light on the dash and also the actual light on the roof keep turning on randomly and just noticed today when i closed the car door a bit too hard that the light stayed on and i had to close it hard again and it turned off. Usually a small bump turns it on but sometimes just happens randomly as well.
If you guys have any tips to where i start, i dont really wanna do something complicated and risk screwing the car.
Also the car is shared by me and my mum at this point since i had to sell my car earlier this year but she takes it to a mechanic whos been ripping her off so im not keen on taking it too him where he will most likely just push in a loose plug somewhere and charge hundreds.
Just for people who need to know car is stock as a rock except sound system but nothings been changed in over a year so yeh.
Cheers for any info in advance, if i knew about this stuff then obviously i wouldnt be posting a question simple as this and waste your time.

Sounds like the switch on the door is stuffed. Goto Toyota, they'll have them in stock. Two screws holden it on, and a plug. Easy.
will look kinda like that.

we had a 93 pajero a few years back that used to do that all the friggin time. got to the point where you were driving along and the light on the roof and dash light thingo would be turning on and off on and off. it was the thingo that the door shuts onto when you shut the door. if we locked the drivers side door it wouldn't do it anymore.

I had the same problem on one of my old cars. It's almost certainly the door switch. Take it out and see if you can get to the contacts inside the switch. Chances are they are just coroded and you can clean them up with some sandpaper. If you can't access the contacts to clean them, then maybe the wreckers can supply you with a used switch for cheaper. If worst comes to worst - remove the switch and earth out the wire. This will at least stop your battery going flat if left for long periods.

Id leave the car idling and have someone push on each door while you watch the dash light..when it comes on you have your problem...then open that door and have a look at the switch...see pic above...something could be messy there or just a wire off behind it,earthing and making the light play up....start with that then look at a new switch it its rooted...they are very simple switches and not much goes wrong with them as a rule...

stick to what you know..
(its not car electrics.)
doing what you suggest will net a VERY flat battery over night.
it is a switch and toyota of that era are great for that fault. take the car to toyota parts (that way tehy know what car you drive.) and get a new switch. the used ones will do the same thing over time so you are back at square one..
