That 'triangle' was awesome. It would have been bad trying to defend it while supporting the oponent's weight at the same time.

I hear rumours that the UFC is coming to Australia early next year, it'll be a mad scramble for tickets before it sells out if so. Would have to be in Sydney or Melbourne.

I know it's getting more popular as a spectator sport here but there are still not enough Australain competitors in MMA. We need more live events!

Unfortunately I missed both Rize II at the Mansfield and Brace For War at Broncos due to family issues and work commitments respectively.

Dude start with either a stand up or ground style first... Mixing the 2 is too much for a beginner... There is just too much to know to mix both straight away... Especially on the ground, there is so much to know. There is a reason why it takes on average 12 years to achieve a Bjj black belt...

looks like I might have an mma fight lined up in Melbourne atthe end of next month..

To the guy posting about Muay thai, most gyms will let you have a few sessions for free, so go check out a gym or 2 and see if it fits your liking.. As for effectiveness as astriking art it's great... But work technique more than speed and power when your beginning...

Yes, I train 4 nights a week in muay thai. If you're in Brisbane, I'll pass on my gyms details and you can come experience it - first week is free (unlimited lessons). Another member from here trains with me, still waiting on a few other slack bastards to show up tongue.gif
Personally, I find it to be much better than any other form of martial arts for striking (as do a couple of mates, 2nd dan TKD blackbelt, 4 years in kung fu, etc). You learn to use your whole body as a weapon rather than relying on your environment or your enemy to do something a certain way. Grappling is also a very good way to lose weight and develop awesome upper body strength.
MIT20
Where do you train?
synesthesia
Does anyone else read books on this subject and can recommend some good fight-related books for me?

I've already got Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes and Randy Couture's autobiographies as well as some like 'A Fighter's Heart' by Sam Sheridan and 'Fight' by Eugene S. Robertson.

Has anyone read BJ Penn or Anderson Silva's books? Are there some really good books from lower profile people?

BTW, I know that reading books on the subject sounds funny but fighting is as much in the head as in the fists.

It will toughen you up, that's for sure (that just may have been my trainer though, threw me to the wolves straight away, laugh.gif )
Haven't done it since I moved here, but if you want confidence (not cockiness, my trainer kicked you out, permanently, if he heard about you being a cock) then it will work well there too.

It will make you a better striker than most other arts (the art of 8 limbs), as well as being combined with the hardening up factor makes it pretty hard to beat.

Just arranged the night off of work to go see Evolution.

Haven't seen fights at Sleeman before, is it tiered seating or a raised ring? The ringside seats are a bit pricey.
MIT20
mate, the best thing to do is get the general seats and get there early... they have great views... i am looking forward to this evolution. it will be interesting to see how jwp and flip go against there opponents. i have a feeling it might not be a great night for the boonchu gym.

Can any of you guys that train regularly recommend a place where I can start training in jiu-jitsu? I'm looking for straight BJJ not MMA.

I know you train at the Gabba, MIT20, and some others probably train elsewhere.

What I'm looking for is somewhere that takes on white belts and total beginners, not just people who are already experienced. I've rolled with some mates who have had training before and know basic armbar and RNC techniques but I want to start from the start and learn how to do things properly. That doesn't mean I'm looking for a womens defence class, I want to train hard, I just need to start at a really basic level. Probably looking to go to go no-gi but would train with a gi.

Oh yeah... has anyone done BJJ with a nipple ring unsure.gif I can't really take mine in and out and I'm not sure if one of those hardcore fabric Band-Aid patches would be enough to protect it from getting ripped out?

AMA does Jiu-jitsu. Thought of putting a tiny eyebrow bar or anything through it so it's less likely to rip?

i wouldnt be doing bjj gi or no gi with a nipple ring... most gyms will be good with white belts. forget what you know about armbars and rear nakeds, if you are truely keen about starting from the ground up you have to forget submissions for the first couple months and concentrate almost entirely on position. (POSITION BEFORE SUBMISSION)

AMA runs on a machado type curriculum, so give them a call and find out how far through their trimester they are. this isnt that important though, because when i first decided to start bjj, i went to AMA near the end of their trimester and just picked up from where they were.

a gracie based school is a little more relaxed, no curricullum. although this can be better, because you wont just get your belts because you have completed the curriculm, instead you will get it when your instructor thinks you deserve it.

where do you live mate? because if you are after a gym that concentrates more on no gi, then you should check out intergrated mma. the gym i train at is more gi focused, and then we do saturday sessions no gi.

hope that helps a bit...

Probably not, have some sort of hidden sickness (more blood tests tomorrow, hooray) that is making training very hard at the moment. I will probably be there to watch though, it's free as far as I know. Maybe pop in one night and just put your name down/chat to Dip about it?

couldnt believe soren and dk got nocked out ! with similar kicks i was shocked ! ...soren is so technical now its not funny he is like a cutting machine ...my tips is soren will go the distance with bruce, but bruce he will get chopped up...seen these guys fight many times but i honestlly think that bruce has got a bit slower

taylor harvey is up and comming great technical fighter

eli will get nocked out 3round not enough experience he will get over powered .

flip will go the distance ..win ..

just a thought where is scotty bannon now ? trained with him for quite a while and leading up to this fight ...but where did he end up after closing the gym at browns plains ?? nicest guy genuine and down to earth

last i heard, scotty bannon was training/coaching on the north side somewhere... i'm not so much in the know these days when it comes to muay thai though, probably much like yourself.

you rekon eli will get over powered? i always thought of him as a decent sized middlewight.. his punches look damaging. is jwp getting too old for someone like eli...

i know they are different weights, but i really wanted to see mikey tompson take on daddy kool and rip him a new one. i think flip will struggle keeping up with the tomahawk.

i dont know why, but preacher hasnt been on his a game latelty, and the recent wins he has had have been against no names... soren should look after him, although the nugget boys seem to have glass jaws...
incubus
i trained in muay thai for 3 1/2 years up here in darwin and did a little boxing with a mates old man but now i'm old, fat and lazy.

thinking of getting back into it. maybe it might help with my "anger issues" at work....

just found out bannon is running or was with the bikies around 110 kgs

eli is good i will say , but it will come down to experience and jon wayne will target the body on eli as he is alot taller ! (i promise you that )

yer still in touch with a few boys still from the fight scene but was heavly inloved for approx 9 years training with ben holley briggs mainly paul not nathan and preacher and bannon and few others ...

bruce has had a few fights at boxing but has got beaton and nocked out ...

the thing i like about flip is his stance similar to john wayne extremly strong like a brick wall and hard to move around they dominate in that way ...

eli is very light on his feet but once john wayne pins him in one spot it will be all over..
ohsocute69
hey im trying to think of the guys name that has been training with nugget , around i think 65-70 kgs...he is a no rules fighter , seen him on fox doing no rules a few times just cant think of his name ...looks like his well known in the no rules scene ..?

i no it could be a few guys , but you may no his name as he must of just gone recently to nuggets gym

My girlfriend trained jiu-jitsu at Advance Martial Arts Coorparoo under Matt Cooper, I'm open to starting there but wanted to know if anyone recommended anywhere else. I see he also runs classes at UQ and the only other clubs in Brisbane listed on BJJ.com.au are at Toowong and St Lucia.

A search also came up with Tohkon Ryu under Mark Haseman, and Peter de Been at the Gabba amonst others. I guess the best thing for me to do is go along and check out the classes to see which one feels right for me.

Good info there mate. I get what you mean about position first and forgetting all you know, thats why I want to go to the most basic level and learn it all the right way.

I live in spring Hill at the moment, I'm happy to travel to a good gym, my biggest problem is constantly varying shift work would make it hard to regularly attend the one class.

My friend's little bro did MMA at Integrated, he was a Taekwondo black belt and thought he could handle himself until he went to Integrated's classes and got his arse kicked every night. thumbsup.gif

As for the nipple ring, it's been in there for nearly 10 years, I don't like taking it in and out all the time or changing the jewellery anymore but if taping it down along isn't going to be enough then I guess I'll removing it for classes to be on the safe side.

If you're wearing a gi (and t-shirt/singlet under that), just put some good sticky-plaster type bandaids over the ring/nipple (not the Flintstones one - the good ones! mamoru.gif )

If no gi, then put a few layers of stick-plaster over the area I would suggest.

Always good to test classes out - what suits someone else may not suit you. Mark Haseman's classes are Japanese Ju Jitsu not BJJ, in case that makes a difference to what you're looking for. One of his head instructors is opening a gym and classes in Salisbury, and they are going to be more sports jujitsu oriented, more hard-core.
