Kms are fairly low for its age. Could possibly get something a fair bit newer for not much more if you look around though i would have thought.

Out of the '99 era, the GSXR is probably the best pick. The R6 had shit gear boxes, the CBR was ugly and shit, the ninja started its ten year long tradition of being shit about then too.
For 6k it would want to be an exceptionall example of a 99 gixxer 600. As posted above, Id have thought you'd be able to get something newer for that price, even if it has a few more k's. Its the technology that makes these bikes enjoyable now days.

$6k is too dear unless as already stated, it's exceptional condition or has a crap load of aftermarket stuff. Hell, I sold a 02 1000 last year with similar k's for $7k with brand new rubber, PC3, Pipe, etc etc etc...

its a bit expensive, I've been looking at the same bike for a while now, they look great for a 90's styled bike. Shop around or haggle because you can get better for 6K (especially for a non-fuel injected bike)

much better deal (assumung thats $5,300 and not $53,000 lol) provided its in good nik that sounds like a fair bargain to me..and the 2003 would be a far better bike and looks muuch better imo.

IMO the 03 was rubbish and you would have more fun on the 99 if you could screw him down to about 3k which is all its worth.
My old stunt bike was a 98 model fitted with jetski carbs and it loved it and was a hell of a lot more stable on one wheel!!!

i take offence to the '03 model being called rubbish

. just joking, but in my opinion i liked the look of the '03 over my '08 better ( more meat to the bike ) and the sound was awesome as well as the pull. But saying that i am just a regular squid who trashed my '03 within a month !!

NOPE, the 03 was rubbish and probably one of the worst gixxers i've ridden...
The power curve was so boring i would of handed the keys to my grandmother to take it for a lash so NFI why you would even compare the "pull" to the 08
The front end was rubbish, riding position was uncomfortable and was probably one of the crappiest years for colour selection in Australia which was reflected in the sales

these are a fucking top bike, i've spent a lot of time on a mate's 98 gsxr600 and they go like stink. suit a larger rider though as they feel a lot bigger than newer 600s.. that said i'm maybe 5'7" and have no problems on it (but am a confident/experienced rider, these are not for a beginner!!)
for 6k though you aren't far orr getting a 750 of the same age, or a newer 600
the difference between what you can get for 7500-8000 over 5500-6000 is incredible

I had a 99 model as well for a while at ths shop - had a decent midrange as well - not like many SS bike of today, where you need 10k on board to get moving....
As for the 03 being a crap bike from GM - well, here again we are talking about opinions - despite GM not wanting to give an opinion, he's done a fair job against the 03 gsxr6. And fair call - OP asked for opinions of those that have had or ridden those bikes. He's got it right about the looks are pretty generic. The 2000 - 03 models(basically same bike) were first suzi 6's to pick up FI and the real issue was the small glitch in the mapping, making it really difficult to get back on the throttle, after being off it. The jerky FI response was condemned by crap loadsof journos - it was almost impossible to dial in 5% of throttle at full lean, meaning the bike would lurch and unsettle / slide away...
Power wise though - Phil Tainton was getting 125 at the rear wheel from simple head mod's and a reliable 105 was available at the wheel. And the suspension, slipper clutch were all up there with the best. Brakes were known to be a little wooden - a too small MC seemed to be the problem and a 18 mm or thereabout MC turned the brakes into what they should of been originally.
Opinions vary as we've already established - but if your looking at a supersport 600 of any make, i'd take service history and condition over manufacturer...
