Blowing smoke can mean a lot of things. Having had 2 datsun 1200s before ( a12 powered ) usually it would just be valve stem seals, but if you are chewing through the oil your rings have had it. A12 engines are extremely basic, why don't you just rebuild it yourself? Just grab a gregory's manual and a handfull of tools and you should be right. From memory there is only like about 4 different size bolts in those engines so you dont need a whole collection of tools. I've seen rebuild kits on the net starting from like $450 including pistons and the works. Then all you got to do is get your machine work done.
Don't know where you are so hard to recommend somebody close by for rebuilding engines.
Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, you'd be surprised how simple it is.

I'm up in north western country nsw so i think i'm a bit far away to be of any help. Try your local machine shop, they often sell exchange motors fairly cheap. Tried GEM engines, i think they still send engines anywhere in australia.
