Heyas,

I got a 79 series cruiser with some door pods and 6.5 inch splits to suit. I had to cut a small hole in the door card to accommodate the speakers, however, when the sub is turned off or down, the speakers have NO bass, its awful. They sound like shit.

The speakers have been sealed around the pod/speakers and the pod/door card but i think the hole in the card is giving away all the bass? Im thinking of getting some new splits and try to fix this issue but im wondering how to go about it?

One other thing, should the split be up around dash height or should it be near the driver?

So basically you have a set of door pods, however they extrude deeper than the actual pod, and you have accommodated this by cutting some of the door card? (What i gather from your post). okay some more info would help us out in giving you accurate advice. What type of speakers are you running (model number), are they powered by an amplifier (model number or power output) or simply off the head unit? Are they running passive or active, and is the door card sound deadened ie with dynamat or other products? There are many things in combination that affect the overall sound produced by your speakers.
Generally speaking splits aren't designed to handle copious amounts of bass, 6.5" drivers are more suited to midbass duties (70+Hz) although many are very poor at producing these lower frequencies. i'm still yet to be convinced that anything less than an 8" as a true midwoofer, due to their inability to play flat down to lower frequencies. Having said that you can still get quite punchy midbass out of reasonable speakers installed and powered correctly.
Also, by "split" i assume you mean the tweeter?? Basically everything we hear is subjective.....there is no hard and fast ways of mounting tweeters. The best thing to do is just trial the tweeters in various places in the cabin and then choose what sounds best to you. Generally though speakers are designed to be used on axis or within at least 30 degress. Although again, many things can complicate this when installing in a car such as reflections, waveguides etc.
The best thing you could do is give us some specs on the gear you're using, and even some photos of the install and door cards, and then we will be able to further guide you.

Where you mount the tweeter will depend on a lot of things, generally around head level works alright.
Get your doors and the inside of the speaker pods sound deadened. You will never get a lot of bass out of them as plastic is a fairly bad thing to mount on, for best bass I would be mounting them directly to the door with lots of sound deadening.

Thanks for your advice!

They are the fiber glass ones that are angled upwards slightly. Ill look to see if i can put a spacer in and seal it up

A single cab doesnt need more than a front stage does it?

A sub behind the seat and a 4 channel amp to run it all will never go astray.

Yeah, set of speakers, they are VDO dayton's 240w compenents. Powered by a 4/3/2 eclipse amp - ea4000 (4x100). headunit is a high end panasonic unit, about 2 years old. got a slimline 300w pioneer sub in a unported box behind the passenger seat, facing the back of the seat. door cards are not sound deadened at the moment.

check that the amp channels running the splits is set to high-pass and at about 70 - 80 hz as previously stated. splits are designed to take care of mid-bass and higher while the subwoofer deals with all the bass. any bass coming out of a full range speaker usually diminishes the quality of the sound produced. harmonic resonance is your enemy.

Cheers.
