Hey all, my new motherboard showed up today (Gigabyte P55-UD3P) and att he time i didnt bother looking at sockets, now im stuch with a LGA1156 which is the I5 and I7 chips.

As im only on a budget of $200 a week for this computer i was going to go for the I7 860.

stock is 2.8GHZ, and heard max OC was 3.46GHZ. can it be over clocked anymore? as i only have case and mobo at current time, once i get the cpu i can figure out what DDR3 ram ill be going, most likly the cosair 6GB kits, but buy to so i can fill all 4 slots, then can sell the other 2 sticks and overhead fan.

Whats yoru input and the way to go about this delemer of the CPU?
Chris
If you've got a budget why not just go with an i5.
You do any HD video encoding?

Also, i'm pretty sure the i7 (not sure about the i5) chips use tri-channel RAM (Eg. 3 or 6 GB)
You might want to look into that.

yea, i will be doing video editing in the futre, im also building it up for a gaming pc, but like i said, i will buy 1 compnent at a time, ie, frist it was mobo, then case, now im sorcing out cpus, i decided on the i7, tad newer then the I5, better bench mark OCs but the ram i was looking at currently was:

Chris
$450 RAM?

Loled.
streetholden
shouldnt be still $450, think it may be cheaper now, but it was just want i found.
Chris
Just get any decent branded triple channel RAM with decent timings.

You can get good OCZ DDR3 for $200 per 6GB.

With an i7, to run the memory in a triple-channel configuration, you need your memory sticks in multiples of 3 (ie, number of physical sticks of equal sized memory) thus you will not be able to fill all 4 slots. If you did, the i7 will run in dual-channel configuration. With the i5, will only operate your memory in a dual-channel configuration thus you only need your memory in pairs.

Overclocking is for jews. The i7 is more than fast enough for games. Spend the money on fast disks as they will increase the 'apparant speed' of your computer. CPU/Memory is so fast now days that the biggest bottleneck on the PC is your hard drive.

Thank you for your input, its actully thought me a few things, workin with a mate at work is helpin my understand it abit better to, but steering me towards amd lol.

If this setup is mainly for gaming, why not go with a cheaper Phenom II 720 (Its a tri-core, you could go for a quad) and a HD5870?

Sell the mobo.
streetholden
because i will also be doing some / alot of video editing, music editing, website building.. pretty much a high end computer to deal with all that, at once.
Chris
The only thing there that would need a processor like an i7 is video editing, and even then you could get a Phenom II 955 or 965, but the i7 still out preforms the two.

But seeing as you've got the mobo already, go with an i7.

nobody has yet pointed out that the i5 and i7 run different sockets......

The i7 850 and 870 and i5 use LGA1156.
i7 920 and above use LGA1366.

Its the 920 you'd want though. Not sure what OP's motherboard socket is, CBF'ed checking.
